'Gotten'. I hate it, I know it's only a word but can't understand how adults who have grown up in England/ the UK and spent their lives saying 'got', are now using this instead?

Gotten is completely normal and much used in Northern Ireland (currently part of the UK!) You can still hate it though.

QueenieL1 · 13/10/2022 09:44

Sorry, but gotten is not normal in England. I can't speak for Northern Ireland.

QueenieL1 · 13/10/2022 09:47

Thanks, though, so glad I have your permission to hate it anyway.😕

You said England/the UK. Sounded like you were speaking for all of us.

QueenieL1 · 13/10/2022 09:50

I meant England to be honest. Gotten is American English.

Always seems so insincere. I had a boss who used to talk about staff constantly but would always add this as though somehow saying it made it ok to talk about people and slag them off.

Dinoteeth · 13/10/2022 10:06

I know this is an accent thing but people.who add 'r's into words that don't actually have an r in them - why?

StapFooterin · 13/10/2022 10:33

I don't mind the word 'boob' or 'boobs', but I feel slightly nauseous when people refer to giving their baby the boob. Just call it a breast FFS! Breastfeeding. Not boob feeding. Or chest feeding for that matter.

stayathomer · 13/10/2022 10:47

Staycation (to mean an actual holiday without foreign travel)
Yes! I hate that it turned to ‘oh we could only do a staycation this year’ when the person went to a different part of the country and dined out, did amazing activities and basically had a dream holiday!! Just say we had a lovely holiday in wherever, don’t make it sound like you were hard done by!

Am also adding ‘living your best life’

Dinoteeth · 13/10/2022 11:26

Oh Staycation I hate that one.
I wouldn't mind it as an alternative to Hame'lldaeme, but it seems to mean a holiday in your own country not staying at home doing local tourist stuff.

Drives me mad

If it's in a post on here I don't read any further.

I hate it when people say ‘dropped’ in reference to an announcement or film release etc.
Awesome is irritating too.
