Hearty - as in hearty food what does that actually mean?

Evidently

myexisawanker · 13/10/2022 06:48

I was in tears
I'm in floods of tears
I just burst into tears
Full of cold
Stinky cold

All unnecessary

you can be crying or start crying
You can have a cold.

Amblesidebadger · 13/10/2022 06:49

Invite (still not a noun to me even if the dictionary has moved on)

myexisawanker · 13/10/2022 06:51

My Little boy
My Little girl

When describing own child. Poster might say my little boy is 3.

Your son is 3. The little bit is awfully twee and unnecessary

his size /age is covered by the age ref.

Totally agree - not a word, but the phrase ‘grind my gears’ is a cringey as f**k.

Cwcwbird · 13/10/2022 06:53

AnywayS why the s??

jump the shark - I know it’s an expression rather than a word but it’s on every other thread on mumsnet at the moment.

BiscuitLover3678 · 13/10/2022 06:53

Certain phrases like “change his bum” for a poo.

And pretty much any word that means fart. I also don’t like fart but for some reason all these are worse: trump, pop, parp, toot 🤢 I know, I know you can’t win

BorderF · 13/10/2022 06:54

Get Brexit done

It sounds like you need help learning to speak.

BiscuitLover3678 · 13/10/2022 06:54

No. Slippery.

Smashed it - reminds me of my annoying ex-neighbours who liked to boast

Yes - and another popular MN phrase
‘boils my piss’ is just as bad

Minimalme · 13/10/2022 07:40

Definitely 'grinds my gears'.

Belly

High needs baby - it doesn't mean anything, all babies are needy, it's what they do.

My son is at a special needs school and the county we are in calls them 'Moderate learning difficulty' or 'Severe learning difficulty'. It used to be 'disability' which was much more appropriate.

'Difficulty' really doesn't communicate anything about a child's needs. At all.

EtiquetteQuestion · 13/10/2022 07:42

Toppings - just about OK when it's used in the context of pizza, but it makes me cringe so much when I hear "toast toppings".

Reach - usually used in the context of lifestyle interviews in Sunday papers - "I'll reach for a handful of almonds", "I'll reach for my comfy wellies before taking the dogs out for a walk across a muddy field". Just move closer than arms' length away to your items, then you wouldn't have to keep "reaching" for them FFS.

Share - in the context of parents (usually "celeb" parents) sharing children, often used in online celeb news/gossip- "they share two children together". And it's not always used when the parents have separated. You don't share children like they are toys or sweets to be handed out. You have children.

Riapia · 13/10/2022 07:44

Two words I’ve seen used on MN recently.
Dumb and lame.
Disgusting to drop these casually into conversation.
