My favourite detective. My children teased me for years every time the music came on theyd groan and say OH no Bloody Jessica Fletcher

I watched an episode this afternoon. I'm sad, we were blessed with a wonderful actress for many decades

My absolute favourite ever episode of Murder She Wrote was 'Murder in a Minor Key'. It was pure joy, albeit utterly bonkers. It nearly stumped our super sleuth. A pianist shot with an arrow whilst seated at a grand piano in a high-rise apartment with the door locked from the inside. How on earth could that happen? There was no way in to the apartment, no way of the murderer escaping through the window. So how, I hear you ask! This case would have tested the entire homicide section of the FBI...but not our Ms Fletcher. It didn't take her long to seduce that the murderer had set up an elaborate crossbow mechanism concealed within a drinks cabinet that would automatically fire a deadly arrow straight through the heart of the pianist when triggered by the vibrations a very specific chord in the minor key. To say that the plot was a tad convoluted is an understatement. But it clearly presented no challenge for our amazingly intuitive Ms Fletcher. If ever you get a chance to watch it, I would highly recommend it for its comedy value alone.

Ahh, the origins of the whole Jonathan Creek series now make sense 😁

""Magnum, P.I." Novel Connection (TV Episode 1986) - IMDb" m.imdb.com/title/tt0639701/
I remember her popping up on Magnum PI as Jessica Fletcher

My favourite was when they replaced the sherrif in Cabot Cove. The newer one used to work somewhere like NYPD homicide and remarked that he had dealt with more murder investigations since 'retiring' to Cabot Cove.

She created the role of Mrs Lovett in the first production of SweeneyTodd — I saw her much later as Madame Armfeldt in A Little Night Music. She was a genius.

Blue Hawaii is a wonderful film such a time piece

Backmebring · 11/10/2022 23:41

This one. This death. It’s hit me.

StupidSmallFruit · 11/10/2022 23:52

Off the back of The Last Movie Stars doco on Neon about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, we watched The Long Hot Summer last week.

Angela Lansbury’s in it. I googled, to see how old she was, and was surprised to learn she’s the same age as the Queen.

And now, coincidentally (I mean, for me!), a week later she’s dead.

She is in Gaslight, by the way - it was her film debut (1944). A quick google reveals that.

Deflatedsponge · 11/10/2022 23:56

This has made me so sad.

RichardsGear · 11/10/2022 23:58

I thought the Gaslight denial was a joke, about the nature of gaslighting?!

She seemed the same for ever.

StupidSmallFruit · 12/10/2022 00:01

Zampa · 11/10/2022 23:00

Angela Lansbury isn't in Gaslight. You must have imagined it .

RIP Angela - a true icon. Loved MSW in the 80s and still love watching the numerous re-runs. As a kid, I always used to wonder if the plot of the story she types in the title sequence was ever going to be shown in one of the episodes.

BeaLola · 12/10/2022 00:25

Was so sad to hear this. Loved Murder She Wrote - that and Columbo when I was ironing - gentle tv despite all the murders !

Reading the obituary I'm staggered it only ran for 12 years - I'm sure there are lots of episodes I haven't seen. If someone E had asked me how long it ran for I would have guessed nearly 20 years . She always seemed very graceful and lovely when you saw her interviewed.

Worriedaboutethics · 12/10/2022 04:07

@justasking111

how sad

Zoopet · 12/10/2022 07:10

When my daughter was at Nursery school the children were asked what was their favourite TV programme, cue lots of Teletubbies etc.
My daughter promptly answered Murder She Wrote!
The Nursery Teacher was slightly taken aback...

MerlinsButler · 12/10/2022 09:51

Oh this made me so sad. Bednobs and broomsticks was the first film I saw at the cinema. Loved it. And Murder She Write is my go to for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Still love this t-shirt though. Lol.

RIP Angela Lansbury / Jessica Fletcher Flowers

I am so sad about this news. My late Nan used to know Angela Lansbury years ago and always used to speak very highly of her (they were pretty much the same age). She used to dress similarly to Jessica in Murder She Wrote, and we used to refer to her colourful shoulder padded blazers as her ‘Lansbury’s.’

We all used to watch Murder She Wrote back in the day - happy days.

This news would’ve made my Nan incredibly sad - and that in turn makes me feel worse. RIP Angela, another lovely person of age who we have sadly lost.
