Would your dog protect your home?

I've ended up down the YouTube rabbit hole again...

I know mine wouldn't protect my home. He didn't meet my brother-in-law until he was over a year old when my brother-in-law walked in unannounced while I was sleeping off a night shift. My dog greeted him like a long-lost friend. He would bark if he heard someone trying to get in but once they were in he'd be besides himself with joy.

I hope not. My belongings are replaceable. My dogs aren't.

IHateWasps · 11/10/2022 15:58

Smaller dog is a brilliant watchdog though. She doesn't miss a thing. My bigger dog could fart them to death.

Mine wouldn't. I'd be surprised if she even raised her head off her bed tbh.

My old dog would've had a good go at them. She was a lovely dog, a collie/staff mix but definitely territorial. We once had a tradesman come to the house to collect something. I asked him to wait in the hallway (dog was shut in the living room, barking) whilst I got it. He ignored my instruction to remain in the hall and walked straight into the living room (stupid man!) where the dog immediately jumped at him, growling, and ripped the arm off his coat. She certainly gave him a fright.

Tealpoppy · 11/10/2022 16:23

My sons dog-you’d hear him halfway round the world and you wouldn’t get through the door
a friends dog-he’d give it a bark or two, then he’d be your best mate (and he’d roll over for a belly rub)
My other friends dog-he wouldn’t even bother to look up let alone bark (we had him for a week and I locked myself out-he didn’t even bother to open his eyes as I came through the window,he just carried on snoring)

all 3 are the same breed

Frequency · 11/10/2022 16:25

I do think mine would deter would-be intruders who hadn't been forewarned about him like my brother-in-law had. He is violently enthusiastic when making new friends. He'd be very sad when his potential new best friend ran away, though Grin

Mine would bark at the approach but would be overcome with joy at a new person in the house and go all banana-bodied.

spiderlight · 11/10/2022 16:29

Mine would bark the place down as the burglars were actually getting in (and he sounds a lot bigger than he is, so he might deter them), but once they were in, he would run to find a teddy to show them and follow them round begging for treats.

SirenSays · 11/10/2022 16:32

Only a fool would attempt to break in here. Just the sound of my dogs terrifies people. I always have to chase delivery people down the street because they've heard the dogs and bolted 🤣

My dogs are very friendly but protective of the house and me so I wasn't sure. Then my DH came home late one night with his hood up, the dogs didn't recognise him immediately. Their behaviour completely changed and started growling like we've never heard before until they realised who it was. So yes I think they would

ChinUpChestOut · 11/10/2022 16:33

DDog is a Beagle - decorative but useless. We were burgled top to bottom, completely cleaned out when we went out one evening. We reckon he asked the burglars to open the fridge door and then left them to it. Embarrassingly, 2 years later a friend was dog sitting him in her house. She went out for the evening and also came home to a burgled house, with DDog still in it. He didn't even look guilty.

Vampirethriller · 11/10/2022 16:35

Mine would show them to my purse and ask them to get the cheese out of the fridge.
She has defended me against a bigger dog in the park once though!

Dynamix · 11/10/2022 16:36

My terriers would not shut up until they had roused us- they persistently bark at strangers until they see that we have welcome them in. They'd definitely sound the alarm!

BingoLingFucker · 11/10/2022 16:37

My dog barks loudly and scarily, which I believe would put most people off coming into the house.
She’s a nervy soul though, if someone had the balls to come in I think she’d faint.

GCAcademic · 11/10/2022 16:38

Mine would immediately and enthusiastically lead the intruder to the most precious item in the house — the treat jar.

BingoLingFucker · 11/10/2022 16:38

My late Labrador once saved me from a scarecrow, wouldn’t let me go near it. I often wondered what she’d do if someone broke into the house.

SimonaRazowska · 11/10/2022 16:40

What breed?

my dogs would positively welcome any intruder, show them where the valuables are kept and even hold the door open for them 😉

mine are greyhound and deerhound 🙄

allfurcoatnoknickers · 11/10/2022 16:40

I've got terriers, so they'd bark ceaselessly at the stranger until we got up and came to investigate. JRT boy might also give them a nip on the ankle. Since they're only 30lbs combined though, they wouldn't really be a lot of help.

WhenDovesFly · 11/10/2022 16:41

My Golden Retriever would bark a bit but be their friend for life if they offered food.

The Dachshund though - no-one can even walk past the house when he's curtain twitching without him having a barking fit, let alone come near it. He' not aggressive, as in he wouldn't bite, he's just extremely noisy. If you threw him a ball however, he'd also be your friend for life Grin.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 11/10/2022 16:43

My collie barks when someone knocks but that's as far as it goes. It's an excited bark.

When he's really really excited he bares his teeth which if you didn't know him could look potentially menacing but he just thinks it's someone else to play with

Frequency · 11/10/2022 16:46

Mine is an unknown mix. There's definitely a lot of Beagle in there. Other breeds that have been suggested to me are Rottweiler, Coon hound, Bernese Mountain and Pitbull. He's from Spain if anyone wants to take a guess?

Mine would bark. In fact he did see off someone mooching about the house the other night. Nice big loud barks. I doubt if someone came in to the house he'd do much though!

Underthehills · 11/10/2022 16:47

My springer is the daftest, kindest dog in the world. I never imagined she’d defend anything as she lives for people making a fuss of her. One day the grocer (home delivery) made the mistake of walking into our hall without knocking and she properly, seriously growled at him. He never did it again. Then another day, wonderful dog that she is, ex-DH walked into the bathroom while I was having a bath, shortly before I left the marital home and she growled at him with full hackles up. He was not amused. I think I found her a piece of steak that night.

OhAmBackAgain · 11/10/2022 16:51

Mine would, she's all bark though and slippery as an eel to catch or get near if she doesn't want to.

She would stay in front of them barking trying to drive them back, even when I call her off and show her that the visitors are welcome she keeps keep a very close eye on them 😊

MaliMom · 11/10/2022 16:55

I'd like to think he would protect the people in the home rather than just the building.

He barks at people coming in the gate but will let anyone in the house as long as I'm OK with them

If I was to shout or scream I like to think they wouldn't stand a chance

Some guy grabbed my shoulder from behind a few months ago and made me jump he was millimetres from getting bitten as Ddog leapt at him so has shown he would at least protect me

His mum was a trained personal protection dog he's just a pet and never had any protection training but it is in the breed

MadisonAvenue · 11/10/2022 16:56

A colleague of my husband’s once came to drop something off and not knowing if anyone would be in he said he’d leave it in the back garden.
I was in and the back door was open.

The dog ran out when he heard the gate and greeted this man he’d never met before by rolling over to have his tummy tickled.
