Would your dog protect your home?

I've ended up down the YouTube rabbit hole again...

I know mine wouldn't protect my home. He didn't meet my brother-in-law until he was over a year old when my brother-in-law walked in unannounced while I was sleeping off a night shift. My dog greeted him like a long-lost friend. He would bark if he heard someone trying to get in but once they were in he'd be besides himself with joy.

Our lovely Heinz57 DDog is a fantastic watchdog but once you’re through the threshold she’s your absolute BFF. She wouldn’t give a crap about burglars as long as they rubbed her tumtum and told her she was a good girl. She is protective of me though and snarled once at a door to door salesman that put his arm in the door jam to keep me from closing it. She could tell I was uncomfortable and the guy was skeezy. Luckily I had my hand on her collar cause she was a bugger for running out the door chasing a butterfly or sniffing some interesting litter that had blown onto the pavement.

MRRA · 11/10/2022 19:46

Definitely. He sleeps on the end of my bed and is instantly awake and off down the stairs to investigate strange sounds. He’s good at filtering out “OK “ sounds. He has a loud deep bark he keeps for such occasions, unlike his whines of pleasure when someone he knows turns up. He’s.a Murray River Retriever and on the large size for his breed so looks impressive when going bookers.

German Shepherd here, reaction depends on who's at home at the time. Youngest child no

Chance of getting through the back door

StellaOlivetti · 11/10/2022 19:53

I wonder if your dog has some Transylvanian hound genes in there somewhere? Google some pictures, they’re very alike!

StellaOlivetti · 11/10/2022 19:53

Sorry that was for @Frequency

Think it depends on the breed. Our dog would terrify the life out of an intruder. He wouldn't attack, but he would bark the house down. He is a male Bernese Mountain Dog. Bernese are a guardian breed and tend to be wary of strangers. I once lost my keys and had to climb over the garden fence to try to get back into the house via the open back door. Our dog was in the garden and went totally mental until he realised it was me. It was quite impressive and scary!

LER83 · 11/10/2022 20:06

Mine would bark the house down, he has a very loud and aggressive sounding bark! I reckon if we weren't around and he felt threatened he would attack, hopefully we will never find out! He is reactive to people and dogs in general, but we obviously reassure him if its someone we know/delivery etc and he settles. He's a Cocker Spaniel.

Whattodo121 · 11/10/2022 20:11

We have a collie and she would bark the HOUSE down if someone tried to break in. We have gravel on half the drive and if she hears anyone walking on it she barks. She is a nervous dog, not aggressive so I don’t know that she would attack an intruder but she would go mega bristly and look very scary.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 11/10/2022 20:16

I've had three dogs.
The first would have defended the home to the death. She was a bog standard mongrel but SO clever, brave and loyal. She knew the sounds of all footsteps of the regular visitors we and our neighbours had (only 6 houses in our street), their cars and regular passer bys like the postman. (new postman would take a week for her to recognise and accept). So she never barked at all unless it was someone unknown to both us and the neighbours (who all loved her and said they felt safe because if she barked everyone took notice and came and looked 🤣). In fact at one point one of the neighbours got a burglar alarm which kept going off randomly and annoyed everyone (this was when they were a novel new thing) so in the end he took it back out cos our dog did a better job. 😁During her time she alerted us to 2 attempted burglaries and chased off 3 car thieves. A man tried to mug my dad on a dog walk, and she floored him and stood over him snarling in his face until my dad called her off.
She was a legend. So many stories.
Second dog less discerning, also a mutt, however was present at home when we had a break in. We were just so grateful she wasn't taken or hurt and assumed she'd ignored them or just disliked it but didn't act, however then we found a bloody glove chucked in the brambles at the side of the house, amazingly the police actually took it as possible evidence and dna matched known criminals in the area and they got convicted!!
The third dog would have done nothing I suspect, but he never ended up in the position of being tested thankfully.

TartanHare · 11/10/2022 20:25

Ddog1- beagle. Would bark really loudly if it was daytime, although not as loudly as if it was an intruding squirrel. If a burar gained entry he would bring them her rubber bone.
If night time she wouldn't move. She shuts down at 9pm prompt.

Ddog2- retriever cross. May join in barking but not really know why.
If intruders entered he would either jump up on them in delight or go in a corner and wet himself. No inbetween.

Ddog3- bichon cross poodley thing. Officially lives next door but lets herself in through our dog door daily Would more than likely defend me but looks like a wild marshmallow.

CongratulationsBeautiful · 11/10/2022 20:26

One of mine might. They would both bark really loudly but the smaller one would just be frightened. The bigger one might. He can be quite scary when he wants to be! Labrador cross - incredibly friendly but quite protective of us.

KittyMcKitty · 11/10/2022 20:28

our terrier would bark but in all honesty would just be happy to see the burglars and would help them carry our stuff out.

wishuponastar1988 · 11/10/2022 20:29

Nope. I've got a staffy who is daft as a brush. She doesn't bark when the door goes - only when she hears ME pull up outside! Once my partners friend walked in (we were out the back in the garden) wearing his bike helmet still and she just rolled over on to her back for a tickle. She's ridiculous Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 11/10/2022 20:36

No deliberately.

If her very loud and (apparently) intimidating bark didn't scare them off then she'd drown them in drool as she demanded affection from them once they had broken in. She'd possibly knock them over by jumping up to say Hello, New Friend! very enthusiastically.

Eightiesgirl · 11/10/2022 20:42

My beautiful boy, an extremely large dog but soft as putty, who I sadly lost in February, once let out a strange cry late at night. My son had let one of his friends in to use the toilet in the hallway after a night out, then my son had gone outside for a smoke. I rushed downstairs in my nightie, knowing something must be wrong for my boy to make that strange noise, to find a very worried looking young man, frantically explaining who he was. My dog would never have gone for him but wasn't happy with a stranger being inside, hence the weird cry for me to come and protect him!

Justlovedogs · 11/10/2022 20:43

Two GSDs here. I think they would, but the burglar (or whatever) would have to wake them up first!! Confused

Snap! Our lovely dog was also a staffy, and also a tiny bit daft. She would have probably woke us up barking in extreme delight so I suppose she’d have guarded the home by alerting us in that sense. But no, I don’t think she had the common sense to recognise an intruder and scare them off. I still miss her daft ways.

milawops · 11/10/2022 20:45

I have a German shepherd. I once saw her run away from a butterfly so I'm going to say probably not.

Pigeonnoir · 11/10/2022 20:46

No , barks at random inanimate things like bags of rubbish at side of road .
Watched him when window cleaner came for first time didn't even get up off sofa .

He would be thrilled if someone broke him thinking theyve come to see him.
Never heard him growl in his nearly three years .
French bulldog.

No. I have a greyhound who sleeps about 20 hours a day. She never gets up for guests (or therefore presumably burglars), she often doesn’t even bother getting up for us when we get in. And she never, ever barks. She is a lazy, good for noting layabout. Hopeless (but we all adore her).

Somewhat disappointed this thread hasn’t encouraged more doggie pics - come on people - you know the rules. I have added a rare one of ours upright.

Would your dog protect your home?
Campervangirl · 11/10/2022 21:17

Pretty good at protecting us from dogs on the telly, barks, growls jumps up trying to get at them, sounds really vicious, pretty impressive.
Won't have a bar of next doors cat 😺
I'm not relying on her to protect me 😉

Notplayingball · 11/10/2022 21:21

She's 62kgs so could knock someone down easily but she'd lick an intruder to death. That's it.
