Would your dog protect your home?

I've ended up down the YouTube rabbit hole again...

I know mine wouldn't protect my home. He didn't meet my brother-in-law until he was over a year old when my brother-in-law walked in unannounced while I was sleeping off a night shift. My dog greeted him like a long-lost friend. He would bark if he heard someone trying to get in but once they were in he'd be besides himself with joy.

God no, he'd just be thrilled to see another person.

The cat would though. He's as hard as fucking nails that one.

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/10/2022 21:24

One would, one wouldn’t.
The one that wouldn’t is just lazy, he wouldn’t move at all.
The other thinks he’s a hard man but it reality looks like an overexcited puff ball.

Autumnleavesandhotchocolate · 11/10/2022 21:26

I couldn't call it. He's been lying on his bed, watched the Amazon man open the front door and walk into the porch and drop a parcel off (no, it wasn't arranged, no it wasn't the usual man and no the porch isn't behind a separate front door situation - just an internal door, which happened to be wide open at this time) and not even raised an eyebrow in surprise or acknowledgement.
But there have been times when he has heard a noise outside and he has growled a noise that shouldn't be possible given his size. I also walk him early into he mornings, often it is pitch black. I have known him leap vertically three feet into the air at the sound of a man hole cover and I have known him turn and stare down joggers and other dog walkers who have Ben walking behind me. God bless his little beard.

No chance. Mine would be thinking " Yeah!! a new friend" and jumping to try to lick their face.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/10/2022 21:30

Not my home no, but one of them would protect me. He has done before. Bless him.

Helenloveslee4eva · 11/10/2022 21:35

My dog has a big loud bark.
hes also a lap dog breed so WOOOF WOOOF WOOFF … aren’t I a good boy , would you like to know where the silver is ?
😂

certainshepherdpups · 11/10/2022 21:37

I think my dog would be like yours, OP. He'd bark at first but then he'd be delighted to have a new playmate if someone managed to break in.

However, the other day we were out for a walk and he suddenly started barking in a very urgent way and even growled. I was quite shocked as he's such a friendly soul. Then I saw what he was barking at. A man had trimmed some large branches off a tree and was carrying them in front of him. He looked like a walking tree. No wonder my dog reacted with alarm, it was quite a startling sight, like Birnam Wood come to Dunsinane. But my dog's reaction made me think that maybe he could become quite protective if faced with an unusual and potentially threatening situation.

Snowwhiteandthesevendwarfs · 11/10/2022 21:44

I think our older dog probably would, years ago we were out on a walk in daylight and he went really low scary growls at a man walking past, he was wearing hood up and a sort of balaclava face covering so was definitely upto no good, younger dog probably wouldn't protect the house but would protect me or the kids, he follows me everywhere at home and I regularly hear him get up at night and walk into the children's rooms to check on them then get back in his bed.

LidlCinnamonBun · 11/10/2022 21:49

My old dog would have he was a wonderful dog and protective of us. I got him because my ex was abusive.
The dog I have now would happily wag her tail and lick someone if they broke in and tortured me then killed me.

tealandteal · 11/10/2022 21:52

Cocker spaniel would bark and bark, and she listens very closely to any noises such as the latch on the front gate or any door handles. She also knows the sound of DHs car. If someone did get in I think she would run. Springer spaniel is deaf but if an intruder came into the room where he was I absorbed think he would defend us especially if surprised.

LadyLothbrook · 11/10/2022 22:00

Absolutely not. He'd give it some lip though. Some big ol barks before going in for a happy wrestle. He adores everyone he meets.

muchprefersummer · 11/10/2022 22:05

Ages ago I would say no however things have changed. He sometimes barks at people knocking on the door when DH is in the house, sometimes not.
When it's just me and the DC at home, dog will always bark - he sounds big and scary although he isn't. I never thought he'd actually protect us but a few months ago DH came home from work in the middle of the night and he was greeted by big dog running down the stairs at him growling. As soon as he was close enough to DH to realise who it was, he promptly laid down for a belly rub!

Tomatoeplantpants · 11/10/2022 22:06

My pointer would bite them for sure, she’s very fearful of new people in the house. The other three would bark but that’s probably it. However their collective bark could be terrifying enough to prevent a burglar ( I hope)

Blanketpolicy · 11/10/2022 22:10

The worst ours would do is give them a good sniff. Then if they'd left a door open he would head out for a walk and leave them to it.

Dnieces dog, reactive rescue (gsd cross), would make a lot of noise, snarl/growl, and snap. When she collapsed at home he wouldn't let the ndn or paramedics in to get to her.

tuttifruit · 11/10/2022 22:13

My chihuahua would go absolutely berserk if a stranger came in

Ballocks · 11/10/2022 22:15

Used to have a female Jack Russell when I was a teen. Lovely dog but v territorial about the house and protective. She would sit/lie on the back of an armchair in the window so she could watch anyone approaching the drive and front door.

If there were visitors she would get as close to my mum as possible, preferably on her lap (blocking the view!) if she was allowed, or beside her feet but never taking her eyes off the person if she didn’t know them. It was quite funny to watch her lie down but with the “I’ve got my eyes on you look”. 👀

She did alert us to burglars who were trying to drill through the back windows at 5am!!! This was 20 years ago.

TooMinty · 11/10/2022 22:16

She's a Golden Retriever. I don't think I need to say anything else.

stillvicarinatutu · 11/10/2022 22:19

I have a big fluffy German Shepard who absolutely barks like a guard dog but if anyone walks in he just wants cuddles! My terrorist terrier would probably be more use !

SouperNoodle · 11/10/2022 22:23

My old dog protected our home when someone tried to break in and scared them off. He was just the most amazing dog.

My now dog is about 6lbs and lazy as anything and would probably sit there trembling 🙈

Tealpoppy · 11/10/2022 22:29

Our old dog (my childhood dog) had a really loud bark-all gob and no knickers if anyone dared to knock on the door-if they’d broken in,she would have barked then rolled over for a belly rub and would have shown them where the treats where

she was a ‘57’ (god knows what dna she had-my parents rescued her)

she was an amazing dog-so gentle and loving with everyone

we learnt to walk, using her as an aid-my parents have photos of us all using her to steady ourselves-she’d walk off with us in tow,she often had a twin on either side of her when they where learning how to walk

a stranger came anywhere near us-she was very protective of us-not growling but would stand close to us and eyeball them

however, she hated my aunt-she’d growl with her hackles up if she walked in,would spend her time eyeballing her and once went for her because she got too close to one of my twin brothers

it turned out my aunt is a really nasty bitch and has done some shocking things to people over the years-I’m talking things that she should be in prison for

my dds dog (a Lhasa apso) is the biggest sap I’ve ever met

break in with a packet of ham and a belly rub,he’s your best mate-I’ve heard him bark twice his whole life

He hated our old neighbour who turned out to be a nasty, nosey, wife beating twat

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 11/10/2022 22:46

Nope, our lab whispers his barks 😂. He’d do a couple of whispered barks then grab his ball in the hopes of a game of fetch.

caringcarer · 11/10/2022 22:53

Our 2 girls would bark their heads off.

Branster · 11/10/2022 22:53

ChinUpChestOut · 11/10/2022 16:33

DDog is a Beagle - decorative but useless. We were burgled top to bottom, completely cleaned out when we went out one evening. We reckon he asked the burglars to open the fridge door and then left them to it. Embarrassingly, 2 years later a friend was dog sitting him in her house. She went out for the evening and also came home to a burgled house, with DDog still in it. He didn't even look guilty.

Clearly your dog is the guy on the inside. I'd keep a closer eye on him and find out who is he hanging out with. Very slippery slope here.

PugInTheHouse · 11/10/2022 23:07

My massive dog would jump up to say hi through roll over for a tummy rub. My pug would bark lots then lick them.

I suspect my big dog would scare them off as he looks like a wolf, he just would be rubbish at actually scaring them.

Mandatorymongoose · 11/10/2022 23:13

Ddog did once scare off an Amazon delivery person who was considering leaving a parcel in the garden and he is very suspicious of strangers and would woof a lot if they were outside.

Unfortunately, he also only weighs 6lbs and is scared of his own shadow a lot of the time, I suspect once someone was in he would just stick his head back in his blanket fort.
