Large religious families

carrotsinthepan · 08/10/2022 07:40

I was watching something on YouTube and it struck me how many large families are religious families (especially Christian in the US and orthodox jewish in various places) I was just thinking that they seem to attract less criticism for the number of children they have opposed to non religious families .
I was also wondering why various religions promote large families as what I watched didn’t go into that ? I find it fascinating but have nobody in rl to discuss it with !

I have a large family and often get criticised and I was thinking - can this now be shut down if I say ‘it our religion ‘ when questioned even if it’s not !

The Christian church believes in the Old as well as New Testament. OK, the gospel narrators and John the Baptist were not divine, but they had authority. God and Jesus - male, Holy Spirit I don't know. But it seems to me like a text compiled by males with a male agenda to power. I don't think a divine entity would be so sexist.

Have you ever read it?

No doubt the Almighty regrets not having done things your way!

I prefer atheist but whatever floats your boat really.

Well just as illogical then.

gnilliwdog · 09/10/2022 12:30

Yes, I have read it out of curiosity. I don't believe any almighty wisdom would be constrained by the sexist attitudes of the time, so I think it was the creation of sexist men with lively imaginations.

I have also read it at length, not through choice. I am all for people interpreting their holy book however they want, but to pretend others haven’t used it to oppress women is ignorance.

In that case if it was the creation of sexist men then the first people to see Jesus alive would not of been first century women. The beginning of Luke‘s Gospel would not have been a biography of two women. Your problem is that you are reading an ancient document with the mindset of a 21st century woman rather than setting it in its historical context. You failed to see the fact that Jesus rebuked the Pharisee and commended the woman who anointed him. The problem is you have so many preconceived ideas that you don’t actually get the revolutionary piece of literature it is and why it was put down and has been put down throughout the centuries both by religious and non-religious people

People can use anything to oppress other people. But to say it is rightly interpreted when it’s used to the press of the people is also ignorance of what the new Testament actually says

gnilliwdog · 09/10/2022 12:45

But if it was the literally the word of 'God' the historical context doesn't matter. God is supposed to exist outside of time and prejudice. It's a selection of documents, who knows what is missing or how it's edited. That women appear in it is not really evidence of anything but their relationship to male power.

You don't believe or subscribe to the old testament and ignore it completely?
That seems an unusual doctrinal position for a christian.

Have you actually read it? The new Testament is not something that God dictated from heaven to men but the selection of documents that we believe that God has made available to us for faith and conduct. They are written by men been inspired by God that comes through the personalities of those people. If you read the beginning of the gospel of Luke he tell you how he did it by interviewing people and putting their thoughts together. To say that the women are just portrayed as their relationship to male power is quite ridiculous where Jesus spends most of his time rebuking the males and commending the females when they are in attendance!

As Christians we believe that the new Testament is the fulfilment of the promises in the old Testament and so therefore we read the old Testament through the lens of the new Testament. But of course we don’t believe that the theocracy of Israel applies anymore. But we do believe that the whole of the promises of God which he made to the forefathers apply to us. We cannot understand the new Testament properly unless we know the old Testament bases from which it comes. So we believe that the law of the old Testament was fulfilled in the Messiah Jesus but that his death and resurrection has bought us life which the law couldn’t give.

ChilliBandit · 09/10/2022 12:54

@Kellie45 - so you just get to decide which parts of the bible are and aren’t relevant anymore? And atheism is illogical? Interesting 🤔

I would say that there is more criticism of people who have large families for religious reasons rather than less.
It's not just avoiding contraception and abortion. There are obviously religions that promote large families.

The atheistic regime in China explicitly forbade more than one child until recently. Now they have a problem.

Sorry, @Kellie45 which part of the NT are you relying upon to support your choice to engage in personal attacks of other people?

It's odd how personal attacks are against MN forum rules but not your religious doctrine.

tickticksnooze · 09/10/2022 13:15

We allow the Bible to interpret itself. We believe all the Bible is inspired as preserved but not all of it is equally applicable to living today.

How handy.

Well a bit like science in that Newton’s Laws are fine for tracking billiard balls but for atoms and electrons one might need quantum mechanics. Handy you know!

I think someone needs to tell supreme courts all over the world that documents can interpret themselves. Now that really is a revelation.

How is it personal? I would’ve thought that is a logical assessment of atheism

@Kellie45 - have you ever heard the phrase you catch more flies with honey than vinegar? You are not coming across as the greatest advocate for your religion here.

Obviously you misunderstand what Christianity is in that we do not live under the theocratic laws of ancient Israel. Neither do we take certain verses from the old Testament out of context and use them as a excuse to beat people over the head with

Organisations such as the Christian Institute cite Leviticus when arguing against repealing section 28, legalising same-sex marriage, equalising the age of consent and generally trying to stop gay people having rights. Still do, it's on there website. The American group who harass women outside abortion clinics in Scotland have a quote from Jeremiah on the signs they wave.

If you want to see real extremism concerning large families, watch 'Keep Sweet Pray and Obey ' on Netflix. The cult leader Warren Jeffs is serving a life sentence. He had 78 wives. It's a real horror story and an example of how people can be brainwashed.

@Avidreader69 I’ve also seen a man who was raised FLDS and then left talk about this show on YouTube with his wife. Their channel is called Growing up in Polygamy, which has been insightful.
