Can I ask what you are all spending on food shopping?

We are a family of 4, two adults and two teenagers. I shop in Tesco, Iceland and Lidl. I'm finding that my monthly shop is nearer to £700 than the £500-£550 that it used to be but there's nothing I can really cut out. We all eat at home most of the time so it's breakfast, lunches and dinners for us all everyday, the kids take packed lunch every day, and that's not including any alcohol that I'll occasionally buy separately. I don't splurge, just normal foods, nothing fancy, basic dinners, packed lunch stuff etc. I tend to do a big shop for Sunday which is now about £120 and then top ups of bread, milk, fresh fruit and salad or anything that's missing for a meal etc during the week. Just wanted to see how it compared really. Us two adult are trying to eat healthier/lose weight and I'm noticing that that's more expensive too! I also try and run the freezer down sometimes but it doesn't make that much difference...

Family of four here and it's easy £150 a week. My children are dustbins!

Whitney168 · 07/10/2022 15:50

I'd rather not add it up, to be honest ... 😆

Cripes! I thought ours was high!

shiningstar2 · 07/10/2022 16:14

2 adults, One medium sized dog. Approx. £300 per month if I am careful.

autienotnaughty · 07/10/2022 16:15

Three adults one child usually about £75 for main shop and between 20-40 on top ups. That includes cleaning and alcohol.

Beefilm · 07/10/2022 16:17

4 adults, 4 cats. Almost everything - food, cleaning stuff, most toiletries, etc - easily £130 to 150 a week. I used to have a budget of £90.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 07/10/2022 16:18

3 adults £90 p/w for all meals, cleaning products and alcohol.

Heatherbell1978 · 07/10/2022 16:20

Family of 4 here but DC are 5 and 8 and have school dinners (free here). I would say I'm £500 if I work really hard at cutting back but £600 normally. I've started getting weekly Tesco deliveries again as Tesco is cheap if you stick to Aldi price match and Clubcard deals. Then top up a bit with Aldi or Lidl. I've found SimplyCook boxes a game-changer. Although they cost £10, the ingredients needed are all very similar and use cheaper cuts of meat etc so by meal planning around them I've definitely saved in recent months.

mewkins · 07/10/2022 16:20

1 adult 2 kids. About £50 a week. I tend not to buy any alcohol though and we eat veggie (apart from the odd bit of chicken for the kids).

Aren't the SC boxes just spice mixes though? You could buy a decent set of herbs and spices and make your money back in savings in a week or two.

I used to budget £100 a week for 2 adult and (at the time 1 baby 1 toddler). Now 2 adults and 2 kids (3 and 6) it's nearer £140 a week. Around £80-£90 on a main shop if it's Aldi, £110 if it's Tesco and £40 ish on top ups of fruit, bread milk.

We cook from scratch, DH and I are trying to lose weight so using more fresh veg and meat/fish I guess. DH is also taking lunch to work, but then he's saving money on buying. I don't know how to cut it down much more. Neither of us drink either, so having nicer food was always the trade off.

LadyDanburysHat · 07/10/2022 16:25

Family of 5, with the eldest DS often not eating with us, and we are probably spending around £800 pm. To be fair DH could buy less wine and beer and that would help, but costs are really rising.

NCFT0922 · 07/10/2022 16:25

Family of 6 but youngest is a baby so no food for her but do buy nappies.
DH and eldest 3 have packed lunches 4 days a week, DC have school dinners on a Friday & DH buys lunch out. We have a takeaway on a Saturday and go out for food most Sundays.
Weekly shop is £160 not including toiletries or cleaning products. Does include nappies & a few lagers for DH.

InDubiousBattle · 07/10/2022 16:26

We spend £160-180 per week for 2 adults and 2 dc (7&8) but that includes some booze and cleaning stuff plus all of our lunches as the kids take a pack up to school.

Bluevelvetsofa · 07/10/2022 16:27

I spent £60 this morning and there will be some top ups during the week of more fresh stuff. Probably between another £10-20. Two adults.

Mommabear20 · 07/10/2022 16:28

Between £60&£90 a week for a family of 2 adults, a 2y/o, a 1y/o, 2 small dogs and preparing for arrival of baby in December. This includes all our food, household cleaning and laundry stuff, nappies, wipes, and dog food.

Fabuleuse · 07/10/2022 16:30

£150-£200 per week for two adults, two children. We very rarely eat any meals out of the house.

bingbummy · 07/10/2022 16:32

Food is the one place we've been able to save during this. I cut out processed foods for the most part, so kid still has waffles and a *cheese spread for lunch. But anything processed I just cut from our diet. I make all the meals from scratch and we don't eat meat or dairy. There are no snacks in our house, I make things like banana bread and flapjacks from oats mainly for filling snacks.

Fuwari · 07/10/2022 16:37

Just me and two cats! About £40 a week. That includes cat food, household stuff like loo roll etc. Excluding alcohol. But I don’t really eat lunch, maybe a bit of toast (wfh). I eat meat most nights but often “cheap” meat made into curry or a pasta dish or whatever. I never snack which I think can also put the cost up. I’m not as virtuous as it sounds though, as I do spend around £25 a week on alcohol!

coldcaff · 07/10/2022 16:39

Two adults, 13 year old and 10 year old. I don't know an exact figure but I'd say around £100 a week. That does sometimes include cleaning products and toiletries. On top of that we tend to have a takeaway or eat out perhaps 3-4 times a month, and OH sometimes buys his lunch at work rather than taking a packed lunch.

transformandriseup · 07/10/2022 16:39

£400 at Aldi for a family of 3

OnlyYellowRoses · 07/10/2022 16:41

2 adults, 2 teens, 2 primary age children and a cat.
Roughly £140 a week. I meal plan for the week and strictly don't go off my list when shopping. I shop mainly in Aldi and a local wholesalers. Home bargains and Poundland for cleaning/laundry bits

MeanderingGently · 07/10/2022 16:44

Single, older, live alone so no family or pets to feed. Batch cook, no treats to save money. In 2020 I could actually get the weekly shop to around £20-£25 per week, now it's about £40 per week (cleaning materials and everything but not petrol). I tend to use Tesco as I have a Clubcard and the cheaper things at Aldi/Lidl aren't the sorts of things I eat anyway (don't eat bread, pizzas, baked beans and so on).
