Can I ask what you are all spending on food shopping?

We are a family of 4, two adults and two teenagers. I shop in Tesco, Iceland and Lidl. I'm finding that my monthly shop is nearer to £700 than the £500-£550 that it used to be but there's nothing I can really cut out. We all eat at home most of the time so it's breakfast, lunches and dinners for us all everyday, the kids take packed lunch every day, and that's not including any alcohol that I'll occasionally buy separately. I don't splurge, just normal foods, nothing fancy, basic dinners, packed lunch stuff etc. I tend to do a big shop for Sunday which is now about £120 and then top ups of bread, milk, fresh fruit and salad or anything that's missing for a meal etc during the week. Just wanted to see how it compared really. Us two adult are trying to eat healthier/lose weight and I'm noticing that that's more expensive too! I also try and run the freezer down sometimes but it doesn't make that much difference...

A family of 4 here. Me, DH and two children under two; one child is fully weaned and eats pretty much what we eat and the other is a newborn and is formula fed. On average or
is between £140-£170 a week. This includes nappies and a couple of beers ans a bottle of wine. Pre children is was around £80-90 a week. Before the prices increase really kicked it, it was £120-140.

So yes, my weekly shop yesterday was more than statutory maternity pay. We could cut out the wine and beer but it would still be in excess of £120.

LittleMy77 · 07/10/2022 17:35

If you add our weekly shop, our once a week top up shop, and monthly shop for cleaning products, it probably averages out at about 150 a week for 2 adults and a kid. Our grocery bills are noticeably higher for basics like coffee, pasta, cereal and the packaging is smaller I.e. last month bought a big box of dryer sheets from B&M. This month it’s a box 1/2 the size but same price.

MrsTimRiggins · 07/10/2022 17:37

About £350/£400 a month at lidl. That’s for me, DH and DC (1yo), doesn’t include washing powder/softener or dishwasher tablets, or baby’s milk powder. Does include everything else, including nappies, wipes, specific baby snacks for on-the-go, cleaning products, the occasional box of beer/bottle of wine, that sort of stuff.

Zippedydoo123 · 07/10/2022 17:40

£80 Asda online and £20 in person Savers Iceland BnM pound shop etc. Me and 17 yr old ds at home.

Mykono · 07/10/2022 17:59

It really need to be Aldi these days to keep it under £100. There are 4 of us, 2 teens.

More scary than the headline figure going up is the amount we're economising so it doesn't go even higher. We're eating less fish, less lamb, less butter, cheaper cereals, less variety generally.

DinosApple · 07/10/2022 18:17

About £100/£110 per week.

We don't eat much meat or drink much. But a bottle of wine would be on top of that.
Two adults, DC 11&13.
Everyone has packed lunches.

Heatherbell1978 · 07/10/2022 18:46

crumpetswithjam yes SimplyCook are just the spices/pastes but they also come with recipe cards and a shopping list for each meal. We both work full time and use it mainly for convenience but we've found it's saved us money as well. I'm not sure if buying every paste individually would save us that much when it's £2.50 a meal for theirs.

AperolWhore · 07/10/2022 18:55

£350 a month for two adults, a toddler and a dog who. That includes nappies, special milk and all cleaning products.

Nowheretoogo · 07/10/2022 18:57

2 adults 2 dc 8-7,£180 a week,it was £120-130!

AlwaysLatte · 07/10/2022 19:00

Our grocery bill is shockingly high. The things that push it up the most are things like meat (although we have vegetarian days we buy free range so it's still a lot) berries which last no time at all in smoothies, packed lunches etc, protein powder for my fitness mad son, wine and cleaning products. We could drastically reduce it if we wanted to. One of our favourite meals is very cheap - red lentil dal with coconut milk eg.

LaMariposa · 07/10/2022 19:02

£80-£100 a week for two adults, two children and two cats. Plus another £100 a month bulk purchasing, and £2.20 a day school dinners.
We menu plan, cook from scratch, and have our own chickens for eggs and a productive garden and allotment. This weekend we’ll be planting garlic in the allotment as I clear the last of the beans, and park choi/ winter lettuce in the greenhouse as I take out the tomatoes.
I bulk purchase everything I can from Bother or similar and have downgraded brands where we can. We don’t eat out or get takeaways anymore.

JenniferWooley · 07/10/2022 19:08

Just me & adult DD, I do a big shop when I get paid for any cupboard staples needing replaced & meat to portion up & freeze which is around £100. Then I do top up shops each week which are around £25-30. So about £200-220 a month.

I do a household/cleaning/laundry shop separately which works out at about £30 every 3 months.

I find meal planning for the month ahead & sticking to it helps keep the budget down.

Hoppinggreen · 07/10/2022 19:08

£150 - £180 per week with Ocado for 2 teens and 2 adults.
Could probably cut it but don’t need to

Family of four adults here, most meals at home apart from DH and I have it about 2 dinners and 2 lunches out a week, the total is £350 per week
and that includes wine and things like dishwasher tablets.

That's madness. That's 3 x my mortgage per month!

Sally99 · 07/10/2022 19:36

Fuwari · 07/10/2022 16:37

Just me and two cats! About £40 a week. That includes cat food, household stuff like loo roll etc. Excluding alcohol. But I don’t really eat lunch, maybe a bit of toast (wfh). I eat meat most nights but often “cheap” meat made into curry or a pasta dish or whatever. I never snack which I think can also put the cost up. I’m not as virtuous as it sounds though, as I do spend around £25 a week on alcohol!

One adult & 2 cats here Smile

£50 a week including alcohol and all meals with no top ups. Strictly three vegetarian meals a day and no snacking for calorie reasons more than money

I don’t have a mortgage.

Ship · 07/10/2022 19:44

£130ish a week here for 2 adults and 2 primary aged kids and one dog. It used to be under £100 each week. I shop at Tesco

sqirrelfriends · 07/10/2022 19:44

We average at about 100 per for a family of 3. Mostly shop at Aldi but buy whatever we fancy.

MurderOfBirds · 07/10/2022 19:58

I'm guessing you live near me, OP! Do you know the Mawney Road Aldi now does click and collect? That's been a game changer for us. I usually stay within £80 for a big weekly shop (including cleaning bits, basic toiletries and a couple of bottles of wine or a pack of beers). And then £30 at Sainsbury's on the bits Aldi don't sell (free from mainly). Maybe another £10 top up towards the end of the week. So £120 max. And it would be less if we didn't have a couple of dietary requirements. That's 2 adults and 2 kids, one of whom eats as much as an adult.

totallyoutnumbered · 07/10/2022 20:01

Family 4 (1 teenager who eats and eats) plus one dog. My bill is around £65 each week. Cook every night and the kids have packed lunches. I do an Asda delivery every weekend and pick up extra bread and milk in the week

FindingMeno · 07/10/2022 20:02

Probably around £100-£120 pw average.
3 adults, 1 teenager, 1 more adult at weekends.

PotatoFamily · 07/10/2022 20:02

Ours has more than doubled if you add in the little extra top ups. Gone from £80 to £200 a week

Roselilly36 · 07/10/2022 20:03

Household of 4 adults, we all WFH, £220 p wk on average.

dirtyasadustpanlid · 07/10/2022 20:03
