Can I ask what you are all spending on food shopping?

We are a family of 4, two adults and two teenagers. I shop in Tesco, Iceland and Lidl. I'm finding that my monthly shop is nearer to £700 than the £500-£550 that it used to be but there's nothing I can really cut out. We all eat at home most of the time so it's breakfast, lunches and dinners for us all everyday, the kids take packed lunch every day, and that's not including any alcohol that I'll occasionally buy separately. I don't splurge, just normal foods, nothing fancy, basic dinners, packed lunch stuff etc. I tend to do a big shop for Sunday which is now about £120 and then top ups of bread, milk, fresh fruit and salad or anything that's missing for a meal etc during the week. Just wanted to see how it compared really. Us two adult are trying to eat healthier/lose weight and I'm noticing that that's more expensive too! I also try and run the freezer down sometimes but it doesn't make that much difference...

£75 a week if including nappies, dishwasher tablets, Coke Zero etc.

Two adults and a 2YO. We don't drink or smoke. Pre DD it was about £40 a week.

HangryDoughnut · 07/10/2022 20:11

Averages out across the month at about £75 a week, 2 adults, a 3 year old and 1 year old. Includes everything, but we don't drink alcohol and buy very little meat, also no nappies/wipes to buy which keeps things cheaper.

westthroughthewhitleywood · 07/10/2022 20:18

Two adults, three children between 2 and 7. I spend 90 a week at Tesco, including nappies and wipes and cleaning stuff. Sometimes we have to get extras mid-week but won't spend more than a tenner.

Just averaged last month's spend and £98 a week for 2 adults one dd17 and a cat.

justkeepmoving52 · 07/10/2022 20:41

Two adults and two primary age children - £150pw now, no alcohol or meat. That's not really much in the way or treats either, just meals and snacks for us. Working at home so lunches too but it's just got to the point where it's a worry now. I used to be able to do it comfortably for £90.

NCFT0922 · 07/10/2022 16:56

@Mano2020 how? Can I ask what you buy roughly and where from?

I come from an Indian background. Most of our weekly dinners consist of some sort of vegetable curry with chapatti rice and yogurt. The only thing we change is the curry we are having every day. Things like aubergine, cauliflower, carrots with potato are used and the mix I make for this is onions, garlic, ginger and spices which i purchase in bulk and last a while. Breakfast is cereal and lunch varies.

Family of four adults here, most meals at home apart from DH and I have it about 2 dinners and 2 lunches out a week, the total is £350 per week
and that includes wine and things like dishwasher tablets.

Dishwashing tablets.... so does your total include your entire supermarket and eating out? Like shampoo, floor cleaner, loo cleaner etc?

TheGriffle · 07/10/2022 22:28

Family of 4, 2 adults, a 9 year old and a 4 year old along with 2 cats.

Food/toiletries shopping is easily £96-£106 a week on the main shop in Aldi sometimes more if I need everything at once like washing powder, dishwasher tabs etc and we don’t drink so that’s not even going on beer or wine. We probably spend at least another tenner on top ups of bread, milk, fruit during the week.

Kitten food and litter is around £10-£20 every 2 weeks and cat food for my old boy £30 every 4-6 months ish.

PercyPigs1 · 07/10/2022 22:46

I'm interested in those who have cut back on meat..what do you eat that's not too carb heavy?

PickAChew · 07/10/2022 23:00

Me, dh and 18 and 16yo sons. In the past 6 months our typical food and household (and booze) shops have gone up from 200 to 250 pw. Every time I go shopping, something else has gone up by 20% or a meal deal or a multibuy has been replaced by a less generous one.

I could shave a little off without compromising anyone's restrictions or preferences but that seems to disproportionately create more work for me, so I just add more of the extra to dh's credit card than mine, instead.

Chickydoo · 07/10/2022 23:09

£200 a week. 4 adults 6 cats. Includes all cleaning products, most toiletries.

Nsky62 · 07/10/2022 23:13

Try and stick to £40 cat and I, I buy my eco cleaning separately online

Firenight · 07/10/2022 23:17

4 of us. 2 kids who eat as much as adults. And cats. I manage to keep it down to £500/month

Mfsf · 07/10/2022 23:36

We are 5 ( Altough one is a 9 month old baby ) and we spend £800 sometimes more . I noticed the price increases a lot the last 6 months .

Handsoffmyrights · 07/10/2022 23:45

Family of 4. 2 ravenous teens, 1 cat.
About £150 per week, but could be £700pm like you too.

Celebrityskint · 07/10/2022 23:46

Roughly £80-£100 a week: family of 3. But some weeks it can be less than £50

Amipreg1 · 07/10/2022 23:53

We are a family of 3, so 2 adults, 1 7YO. We also have a dog and a cat and we have a budget £350 for the month.

We recently increased from £300 as the increases were leaving us short.

I meal plan and try to make meat go as far as I can.

mariebaby3 · 08/10/2022 00:02

Family of 5 inc 3 children 13, 10 and 1.

Spent about £70 a week. As another poster said, strict meal plans, we don’t buy alcohol, fizzy drinks, etc. literally just food for each days set lunches and meals and lunch box stuff, fruit etc to snack on.

What do you mean by going wrong? There's no right answer about how much your food shop should cost?

These threads are so strange, does anyone really set their food budget based what others spend? Do people eat more if they spend less than someone else, do they buy cheaper food they don't like if they spend more?

Grown women don't need to ask strangers how to food shop do they?

I don't understand why you're so put out by my post? You do understand this is a discussion board for people can discuss whatever they want. Nobody forced you to read my "strange" thread, yet you've bothered to read it AND reply. In trying to be sarky you've just wasted your own time. Nobody else seems to have a problem sharing and suggesting when it comes to the shopping budget. God forbid we ask for the opinions of others on an online discussion site - whatever was I thinking?!

I'm guessing you live near me, OP! Do you know the Mawney Road Aldi now does click and collect? That's been a game changer for us. I usually stay within £80 for a big weekly shop (including cleaning bits, basic toiletries and a couple of bottles of wine or a pack of beers). And then £30 at Sainsbury's on the bits Aldi don't sell (free from mainly). Maybe another £10 top up towards the end of the week. So £120 max. And it would be less if we didn't have a couple of dietary requirements. That's 2 adults and 2 kids, one of whom eats as much as an adult.

Oooh that's interesting! Thanks so much for the tip! TBH it's the lack of delivery or click and collect that puts me off Aldi and Lidl because I end up wandering and buying stuff I don't need, but this could be a game changer :)

We're just two; 1 veggie and 1 nearly veggie and we eat mostly fresh home cooked meals. Our sainsburys shop comes in around £80 a week, but the toilet roll, dishwasher tabs, laundry detergent etc., are the expensive items.

Swedishmeatball · 08/10/2022 08:10

Never really thought about it but I’ve just added it up - all online so it’s easy to work out. Average of £250 / week for family of four no pets. That includes a mindful chef meal box for the adults every week for a few of the meals and expensive wine.

comfortablyfrumpy · 08/10/2022 08:16

My £50ish shop at Aldi is now more like £70.
I also use a butcher and a greengrocer and both of those are more expensive too.
