I just love a ring thread!
My DP and I got married last month, and I'm waiting for my wedding ring to come back from the jewellers as it was a little too big.

Whilst I'm waiting (and missing it!!) I'd love to see yours!

I'd love to but have had to sell them all. I kept my old engagement ring for years. The awful day came when there was nothing else to sell. The lady at the pawnbrokers had gotten to know me but she took one look at my face and just kept it brisk and professional. I took my lovely 3 diamond ring off knowing I would never wear or see it again. It was from my first love. I took the money and cried all the way home.

My plain band with a solitaire. Looking shiny posed on a book and less lovely on my knobbly, practical little mitt.

They only come off if doing heavy gardening or lifting pavers. I wear them on the beach, swimming, cooking. They are bomb-proof. The diamond in the solitaire is cathedral set so it doesn’t stick out as much as a Tiffany setting, things don’t catch on it.

One of my wedding ring with DH’s, just to show the freaky difference! They are the same ring, different sizes. We have each other’s name and our wedding date engraved inside. He has my full name but we couldn’t fit his full name in my tiny ring.

@2catsandhappy
That’s so sad! I hope one day you or someone else can buy you another one you love. My first engagement ring wasn’t expensive, but it was very pretty, it was from Ratners, I gave it to my mum to look after until my DD1 was old enough to have it but it got lost or stolen. It was an oval, pale Ceylon sapphire with a diamond halo.

Meanwhile you have two cats? They are more precious than diamonds. I miss mine and we can’t get another, it wouldn’t be fair.

nipersvest · 08/10/2022 00:51

Engagement ring came from a vintage jewellery stall 26 years ago, it's platinum on top, 4 diamonds with a gold band. Is very old, when I had it sized down they said it was at least 150 years old, only cost £220. Wedding ring we designed ourselves to slot around the other ring and took the design to a designer who made it for us. It's white gold on top and again with a gold band to match the other one

Beautifully simple @mrs55

@CG1991 beautiful rings. Which auction houses do you follow? I’m signed up to the Sotheby’s mailing list but can’t imagine actually bidding!

MeridianB · 08/10/2022 07:57

Love this thread. Every ring is so special and gorgeous - thanks for sharing.

Just a question on ultrasonic cleaners… I was told by my jeweller not to put certain things in them. I don’t have one as I was nervous of ruining something.

i know pearls shouldn’t go in and tortoiseshell jewellery and coral. But are all precious stones OK in them?

EstellaRijnveld · 08/10/2022 07:57

All the rings are so lovely. Bumping for the day time crowd. Check the style and beauty board for more ring threads and there’s also a tiara thread.

I'd check out opals and emeralds. Never pearls as you say

Thingsthatgo · 08/10/2022 08:44

@Bridezilla yes, ultrasonic cleaners are good, but it's worth checking reviews because there are many that don't work well
There are some types of gemstone that must not go in, eg pearls and opals, so check first.
They will not clean tarnish or get rid of scratches etc.
they will clean off all the gunk and build up on your rings and earring though.

As a side note, if anyone is buying jewellery, platinum is cheaper than 18ct white gold at the moment. If you buy white gold, the rhodium plating is getting more and more expensive to do, and imo looks cheap. Unplayed white gold is often much nicer (depending on the alloy)

I'm just in the process of designing a new range of engagement and wedding rings with coloured stones. It's interesting to see this thread.

If, by some miracle, you design a diamond and citrine ring, could you let me know please?

Goatling · 08/10/2022 09:07

My engagement ring is platinum and diamonds, wedding ring the same with diamonds in 1-4-3 (I love you) arrangement, dh has the same ring. Please excuse my sausage fingers!

CG1991 · 08/10/2022 09:16

@AdoraBell thank you very much! It’s a really old Cartier Santos Ronde that I bought from auction. It wasn’t working at the time but just needed a new battery.
Depending on what you’re after, the second hand market for Cartier is pretty good as they drop quite a lot in value after the initial purchase x

CG1991 · 08/10/2022 09:23

@Pufflings
thank you very much.
I use the Saleroom.com which is effectively an aggregator for most auction houses and you can have an overview of upcoming sales.
If buying jewellery, try see the item in person. This isn’t always possible so get the auctioneer to send you a condition report and lots of images.
When I’ve made a purchase, I take it straight to a jewellers to make sure it has no chips, nibbles etc.
I really like Fellows & British Bespoke Auctions.
There are some I’d avoid like Auction Zero and the really big ones such as Elmwoods as the prices aren’t competitive.

You can get some real beauties if you’re patient.

Let me know if you have your eye on anything and I’ll see if I can help!

CG1991 · 08/10/2022 09:26

@justasking111 😂😂
so true!
I love gemstones: pearl, tanzanite and aquamarine are my faves but slightly softer stones and I think I’d damage them unintentionally.

I put my aquamarine rings in no problems. Tanzanite I'm not sure of.

CG1991 · 08/10/2022 09:45

@justasking111 beautiful.
Well I’d best get looking 😆
I’d love an aquamarine - they’re dreamy.
