I predict a u-turn on that particular u-turn, unless prices drop in the meantime. That is if the Tories are still in power by April.

What I don't understand is the wholesale price of gas has dropped dramatically in the last month or two, so why would our domestic bills still be rising?

Blossomtoes · 18/10/2022 11:08

Powerful stuff. Thanks @DuncinToffee.

I think it is because the suppliers have already paid for the gas they are providing to us now at higher prices? I think the cap is also based on prices over a certain past time period rather than prices as they stand now, but not sure of the timescales.

Powerful stuff. Thanks @DuncinToffee.

Seconded.

Until quite recently I was so naive about think tanks. I think I have vague memories of hearing in history about the Fabian Society. I really thought they were experts. It's scandalous that they're allowed such a lot of air time without any accountability or transparency.

DuncinToffee · 18/10/2022 10:54

Just watched this. It's absolutely extraordinary. They were all in Cabinet under Johnson. Truss may have pulled the trigger but Johnson lined them up.

The News Agents podcast covered similar but without the level of detail.

Notonthestairs · 18/10/2022 13:45

"NEW: None of Liz Truss's cabinet suggested she should quit at their 90-minute long meeting this morning - PM's official spokesman."

twitter.com/pippacrerar/status/1582349662073208832?s=46&t=UONDqrXoI_8SIx3N8WVEfg

But as pointed out the new spokesperson isn't allowed to attend so how do they know?!

Blossomtoes · 18/10/2022 13:51

Of course they didn’t. Oh look, a pig just flew past my window.

Notonthestairs · 18/10/2022 14:11

I think we've lost a year of government.

Half the year taken up with Johnson lying, obfuscating and invariably being found out (in between trips to Ukraine). The Conservatives unable to wrangle him in to decent order and worrying over the next scandal. Cabinet stocked full of the mediocre & deluded.
A leisurely three months of nonsense from candidates waving flags up Tory members backsides.
And now we are left with a puppet Prime Minister with no mandate (either from the Johnson era manifesto or her own) and months of yet more scarcely veiled leadership campaigns ahead.

Just as well there is nothing else in the world going on right now.

DuncinToffee · 18/10/2022 14:12

NEW: Liz Truss is no longer committed to defending the pensions triple lock, with PM’s official spox signalling it is up for renegotiation.

This is despite 2019 manifesto pledge and PM saying at Tory party conference she remained “committed” to it.

It was a year ago that they defended Paterson

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 18/10/2022 14:18

Yes Paterson was the beginning (of the end).

Personally I doubt they'll row back on pensions nor do I want them to. Yes, I know many pensioners are well off but I know a few of my pensioner neighbours are struggling already.

Cornettoninja · 18/10/2022 14:37

The petition calling for a general election was debated yesterday. For anyone interested hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2022-10-17/debates/78F30897-47A0-4D21-9135-DF1CD19E3AE4/EarlyGeneralElection

I’ve only had chance to skim read but I did like ‘can you tell us how putin caused mortgage interest rates to rise?’ (Paraphrased)

DuncinToffee · 18/10/2022 14:51

Well said Mark Drakeford

I have never seen the First Minister of Wales this angry, Ever. twitter.com/OwsWills/status/1582363903581106178?t=3pnTWBd5_oyaQjwSYdK6ug&s=19

When are the Tory MPs going to get fed up with Hunt? To me I think that's when the real pressure on Truss will occur.

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2022 15:06

Is anyone else just angry ?
Sheila forgerty today ( I can't spell her first name properly , sorry ) is articulating how I feel about the whole thing , just absolute anger at being taken for mugs again by this shower
They must think we are all stupid

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2022 15:07

Hunt looks far too smug about the benefit and tax cuts / austerity
It will not affect him and his wife
Anger anger anger !!

L1ttledrummergirl · 18/10/2022 15:07

@DuncinToffee I agree. Someone needs to hold this shit show to account. She hasn't even bothered to pick up the phone to the leaders of Wales and Scotland which is unbelievable and utterly disrespectful.

Seriously Someone needs to step in and do something. The tories are taking the piss out of every citizen in the United Kingdom. The people are reaching their limits.

How long before someone who is desperate with nothing to lose turns up at a surgery intent on harm? They need to go quickly before things deteriorate.

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2022 15:08

Taking the Piss and then some
She is an absolute travesty

TokyoSushi · 18/10/2022 15:12

Honestly, I was quite enjoying the drama of it all a few weeks ago but now I'm just furious. I'm a bit of a control freak (I know!) and have pretty good control over all areas of my life.

But I feel like this is being done 'to' me, almost forced upon me and I really don't like it. I work hard, and I play by the rules yet still my mortgage renewal is spiraling, energy bills are spiraling, the country is turning to absolute shit and there's nothing I can do about it, other than rant on here! Grin

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2022 15:12

To ignore the devolved governments is beyond rude and just downright disrespectful
I hope that the Scots go for independence
Don't want to lose them, but I would vote yes if I were a scot with a vote

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2022 15:15

I had a rant , but my Dh is a conservative nightmare ! He thinks it's all a storm in a teacup
he is a moderate conservative, a lot of his friends are all tories too
He agrees she's rubbish , but he doesn't want the Labour Party to get in.
We agree not to talk too much about it
The Harlow MP summed it up yesterday , people are just fed up now

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2022 15:18

Back to austerity might be another nail in the coffin ! Especially with Mr Hunt gurning his way through it

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2022 15:32

I'm concerned about Penny Mordaunt though
She looked positively statesman like yesterday and had some killer put downs too
She wouldn't be a push over and might win back the Tories who are a bit fed up just now
Sir Keir isn't that good at times , his delivery can miss rather than hit and PM had some come backs.

Notonthestairs · 18/10/2022 15:40

Yes I can see it's had soap opera elements - broken slides, wealthy wives, coded messages in religious readings, sex in offices. Tawdry but not nation threatening.

But the budget was repeatedly described as a gamble. As if it were a jolly game. Budgets should not be experimental. That should have been a clear sign that we were heading deeper down the rabbit hole.

I flip flop between anger and worry. The governing party is at best inadequate. Hunt isn't wrong to say there are some awful choices ahead. But he & Mordaunt etc are temporary cover for much deeper problems and I don't see an end in sight.
