How do you pronounce Tuna?

I promise I'm not batshit, honestly.

Talking to DM last night and she insists that Tui is pronounced 'chewy' instead of 'tu-ee'.
Now I'm questioning whether we've been brought up pronouncing tuna wrong all our lives. She/we say 'chew-nah' but should it be 'tu-nah' instead?

I say Tyoona (South London) but my friend said everyone pronounces it choona nowadays and tyoona sounds old fashioned

HashtagShitShop · 04/10/2022 10:02

This last year I've realised that my hometown also mangles days of the week.

Mundee, chewsdee, wensdee, thursdee (or rather fursdee), fridee, satdee and sundee.

It's only when I travel away from my hometown that I realise how weird it is/sounds. When there it just sounds normal to me. 🤣🤣

@HashtagShitShop
I'm from s.yorks and we have our own way with words which is totally normal to us. DH is not English and it's only since he's been here that I realise how odd we sound when he tries to copy how I speak.

I'm American and I call it "too-na"

I'm not too far away from you, it must be similar 🤣 my sister in law always says she can tell when my brother has come home because he's louder and "lazier" on his words 🤣

NKFell · 04/10/2022 10:07

Tyoo-na, Too-ee, Liddel, Al-di, Eye-kia...if I say IKEA like the advert I can't help but say 'the wonderful everyday' and a good 5mins after imitating a Swedish accent 😂

BluSquid · 04/10/2022 10:14

I've pronounced it Too-na since I first watched Lilo and Stitch aged about 7😂

ScottChegg · 04/10/2022 10:34

I wanted to say that it's tyoona. But now I have said it out loud a few times I suspect I actually say ch'na, with at most a schwa instead of the oo sound. A very weak form!

diddl · 04/10/2022 10:36

Do you remember when Oil of Olay was oil of Ulay?

I remember that!

My lovely Mum always used it.

So do I-it's Olaz where I am😀

Family121 · 04/10/2022 10:41

choo nuh

Pandor · 04/10/2022 10:41

i think “choona” would be classed as Estuary pronunciation - like travelling on the “choob”.

Beachsidesunset · 04/10/2022 10:43

All I can hear is Arnold Schwarzenegger saying 'Tooo-na'!

CbCV · 04/10/2022 10:43

Choo-nahh

BirdinaHedge · 04/10/2022 10:44

According to the adverts, lidl (lidull) is leedl, IKEA is ick-eya and aldi is alldee. These last three are all very weird to me

So basically, you’re calling the German and Swedish languages weird. How very enlightened of you.

and @fairgame84 you have been pronouncing “tuna” incorrectly. It’s tyoonah. No “ch” sound anywhere.

CbCV · 04/10/2022 10:44

Oh yeah and TUI is too-wee

What?! Are you sure that's how you're pronouncing it?

CbCV · 04/10/2022 10:48

As for IKEA - I realise the correct pronunciation is ick-ee-a but if I said it like that I'd be the only person I've ever met to do so and would feel like a twat. So it's eye-key-ah.

Lidl they seem to have accept themselves it rhymes with middle "middle of Lidl"

ginghamstarfish · 04/10/2022 10:48

choona - also how I write it on my shopping list

ginghamstarfish · 04/10/2022 10:49

I used to live in Ducie Street ... but almost no-one ever said 'dyoo-si' but rather sounded like Juicy Street. I think tuna is the same kind of word.

I love it when people get all dictatorial about correct pronunciation. I just imagine them a few hundred years ago getting really irate at people pronouncing “knight” as “nite” and insisting that you have to carry on saying “k’nig’t” just like it is spelled.

When the kids were young they were playing eye-spy in the kitchen. DS spied something beginning with C . No one got it. It was choona. 🤣

I just choked laughing - that is brilliant

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/10/2022 10:51

Choona.

Mochudubh · 04/10/2022 10:52

Tyoonah

Electrix · 04/10/2022 10:52

Chewna
Chube
Chewsday
Chree (if I try and day it "tree" I just like I'm doing a bad Irish impersonation"

But tui is tooey

cultkid · 04/10/2022 10:53

Choona
