Are you still hanging your washing outside?

Even in the dull cold weather? I am...even though it's a bit of a bother...I do find it makes a difference...this time last year I would have shoved it in the dryer...

Of course, unless it is raining. From around the end of October to the end of March there is no point in hanging it outside here as it will not dry.

foxandbee · 03/10/2022 11:56

Yes, if it still is a bit damp it goes in the airing cupboard where the heat from the hot water tank finishes it off nicely.

BooksAndHooks · 03/10/2022 12:00

Yes usually until end of October. It’s very sunny and warm today so all out.

I know people say you can dry all year but I find it just stays damp and horrible when outside in winter. Double work hanging it out then putting it all on airers as it’s still wet. It doesn’t actually dry much quicker than putting it on the airer to begin with.

Cheeselog · 03/10/2022 12:01

Got some out right now. It’s 17 with a light breeze here today so perfect drying weather really. We don’t have a tumble dryer so if it’s not raining it’s going on the line.

BatteryPoweredMammy · 03/10/2022 12:15

Yes, I use the rotary line all year round. It’s often wet here but we do get wind from the Atlantic Ocean and things tend to dry quite quickly between showers.

Luckily, DP takes responsibility for sorting out the drying so hangs it out, brings it in and puts it on the airer in the hot press/airing cupboard if it needs a bit longer. He usually sorts, folds and puts it away too.

I tend to do the lions share of cooking.

Yes, I've just put a load out now
I haven't used my tumble drier for a year now.
I'm " lucky" that I don't work so I can save my laundry up for a dry day

beachcomber70 · 03/10/2022 13:05

Yes, nearly all year round. Don't have a tumble drier, never wanted one. On a day which is damp but windy I hang washing in the [large] garage and leave the door open. It dries just fine but may take all day.
I finish it off when I bring it in and the woodburner is going [venting the room of course].

Thesearmsofmine · 03/10/2022 13:44

My second lot of the day has just gone outside now. Smaller bits from my first wash were bone dry, some of the other bits just damp around the waistbands/cuffs so I’ve left them out.

Anjo2011 · 03/10/2022 13:49

Two loads for me and more in the machine for tomorrow. If there’s a breeze and it’s not damp or raining, out it goes all year round. Towels go straight in the tumble dryer as I like them soft!

SparkyBlue · 03/10/2022 13:57

Just got my third load in now . There is a fine wind blowing here and the clothes are drying in no time at all

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/10/2022 14:00

Yes, I have a load out now, mellow sun and a slight breeze.

2bazookas · 03/10/2022 14:04

You can dry washing outside all year round.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 03/10/2022 14:15

Why doesn’t mine dry then ? It never does in the Winter. It’s pointless.

It all depends on your garden's microclimate and where you live. I live in Edinburgh and have a small, shady, sheltered garden surrounded by large trees - I'm not going to get the sort of winter drying conditions a large, open garden in the SEE is going to.

ifonly4 · 03/10/2022 14:27

Unless it's below 5c, I put ours out as I feel there's some benefit in that it partially drys. Dull here, but a minor breeze. Washing has been out 5-6 hours and just about dry (that includes a couple of towels).

DiscontentedWoman · 03/10/2022 14:29

I peg washing out all year round. In the winter I tend to use the washing line rather than the whirligig thing so it is more spread out.

UthredofBattenberg · 03/10/2022 14:32

If the ground is dry, it goes out regardless of month or temperature. It might not get 100% dry, but 80% dryed outside is only 20% left to dry in the house.

SarahShorty · 03/10/2022 14:37

I can't say I have been doing that recently as it's been too windy or rainy.

It depends on your location/outdoor space. We have a long line and our garden is fairly open and there’s always a breeze(we live on high ground which probably helps?). Even if the washing doesn’t get totally dry I prefer to at least partially dry outside if I can as we don’t have a dryer and I hate having wet washing inside.
When the weather gets really bad we do take some stuff to be dried at the laundrette once a week, a big IKEA bag of washing costs £5 to be dried, we just drop it off and collect later in the day( it also gets folded and socks paired etc) although that was last winter so it will probably be more now,.

Boriswentcamping · 03/10/2022 14:50

No tumble dryer here. I used to hang clothes indoors on wooden airers during the winter as things wouldn't fully dry outside in a day and I couldn't be bothered to rehang them. Also hated walking across wet grass to get to the washing line. This year I bought a metal brabantia drying rack. I use it on the patio and Its been a revelation! It's really sturdy and doesn't blow over. It also has quite thin rungs so you can peg the laundry on it like you would on a washing line.

I put it outside if the ground is dry and then as the sun goes down I lift it inside. No need to rehang!! Can't believe I didn't think of this sooner. Works brilliantly as gets the laundry out of way and doesn't make the house damp. Even a few hours outdoors seems to make a big difference.

Helps that I have double patio doors to lift it in and out. Might be difficult with a single door

pimlicoanna · 03/10/2022 14:52

Yes

BigWoollyJumpers · 03/10/2022 15:17

My towels are out now. I will bring them in just when they are almost dry, and do a quick 20min tumble to soften them up.

RiftGibbon · 03/10/2022 15:25

Yes, just put a load out.

Roselilly36 · 03/10/2022 17:29

Two loads, dried perfectly today.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/10/2022 17:35

No just been putting in dryer. It doesn't use much electricity
