According to the PM this morning. I actually thought it would be worse. At least families will have some certainty.

No it's not, it's an average, it depends how much you use.
What's important is your tariff with your provider

nothinglikemyname · 29/09/2022 17:17

No.

The cost for average usage is capped at a max £2500.

If you use more than average you pay more than average.

AuntieMarys · 29/09/2022 17:17

More you use more you'll pay. Its the price per unit which is capped

That’s totally wrong!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/09/2022 17:18

Argh, and this is the problem when the Prime fucking Minister is spreading misinformation.

No that's not right, OP.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 29/09/2022 17:18

Of course that's not the case! Liz Truss et al don't have a clue what they are talking about!

mimbleandlittlemy · 29/09/2022 17:19

To quote Martin Lewis: There is no total cap on what you pay, the typical rate is just a figure for illustration.

Probably worth reading the rest of his article: www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2022/09/energy-bills-price-freeze-cost-of-living-government-liz-truss-/

BarbaraofSeville · 29/09/2022 17:20

No that's not the case, as well you know.

Surely people don't take a single soundbite as gospel for something subject to so much 'it depends' as a utility supply contract?

Certainty?

Or was Liz Truss just lying?

You decide!

butterfliedtwo · 29/09/2022 17:23

No. You pay for what you use.

AriettyHomily · 29/09/2022 17:24

No it's not right. How she got that wrong I don't know.

Devilishpyjamas · 29/09/2022 17:24

It’s not capped. Truss got it wrong. See Martin Lewis tweets

TimBoothseyes · 29/09/2022 17:24

No she's wrong. Read what FullFact says about her statements.

Redqueenheart · 29/09/2022 17:26

She is either got her facts wrong or she is purposely lying because what she said is not accurate.

Either way what an appalling PM...

Nowheretoogo · 29/09/2022 17:26

What is average use though?

Explaintome · 29/09/2022 17:26

It's not entirely wrong. A family with average usage will pay £2500

mewkins · 29/09/2022 17:30

Use this calculator and input your estimated (or actual if you have it!) Usage and it will give you a much more accurate idea.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 29/09/2022 17:32

She said
“Through the energy price guarantee, the maximum will be £2,500” (Radio Leeds)
and also said
“no family, no household will pay over £2,500” (CNN)

THIS IS WRONG

She doesn’t know what her own policies are.

XenoBitch · 29/09/2022 17:34

No. The price per unit is capped, but if you use more then you pay more. The £2500 is what the average household will use. Depending on your use, you could pay more or less.

I hope there is some big campaign about this, because far too many people seem to think that they can run up a huge bill, but only have to pay £2500.

AsterixInEngland · 29/09/2022 17:34

Please remember that you’ll still have to pay for it anyway as the difference is laid by the government through debt that YOU will have to pay.
it’s billions that you and your dcs will pay for (in the next 20 years I believe)

Ilikewinter · 29/09/2022 17:35

I wondered why Martin Lewis had suddenly put out loads of messages explaining the price cap .... should have known Truss had been opening her mouth.
Shes a dangerous liability

AsterixInEngland · 29/09/2022 17:35

She doesn’t know what her own policies are.

Or she is trying to save her skin by muddling people so they don’t realised how much they are been shafted.

That is awful. People are going to believe that and then get huge bills.

At least the energy suppliers know what it means - I have had information from Octopus about my bills.

FromageRouge · 29/09/2022 17:37

This miscommunication has been rolling for weeks.
