So the maximum an average family can pay for fuel bills is £2500 ?

According to the PM this morning. I actually thought it would be worse. At least families will have some certainty.

OP posts:

She doesn't understand her own policy.
Totally wrong and unfortunately the press have also been pedalling this rubbish since the price cap was announced. They never make it clear that it's the price per unit and the daily standing charge which is capped not your overall bill. Clearly this will lead to many people thinking that they can use whatever they like and the most they'll pay is £2,500. Madness.

FromageRouge · 29/09/2022 17:39

For example OP, I took a fix that is a smidgen lower than the guarantee will be and my forecast total annual bill is ~4200£. High usage, big household.

BMW6 · 29/09/2022 17:39

FFS you'd think she could state her own policy clearly. 🙄

£2500 is only an example of the cost of AVERAGE useage. Use less, pay less. Use more, pay more.

The words 'organise' and 'brewery' spring to mind.

So does anyone know how it works if you live in the sticks and inky have bottled LPG gas for heating ? They have gone up hugely and no mention of how this will work

Nolosomi · 29/09/2022 17:42

She’s talking shite and clearly doesn’t know what she is doing (or saying).

I so wish there could be a general election soon, labour have a 33 point lead (according to Radio 4 just now)!

LaurieFairyCake · 29/09/2022 17:45

She didn't get it wrong

It was entirely DELIBERATE

If you go and ask 100 people in the street about 15 of them will now think this 🤷‍♀️

I did see some mention of LPG and heating oil while I was nerding out on it. I’ll have a look for you.

She said
“Through the energy price guarantee, the maximum will be £2,500” (Radio Leeds)
and also said
“no family, no household will pay over £2,500” (CNN)

THIS IS WRONG

She doesn’t know what her own policies are.

Oh dear God...

I know there have been many misleading headlines in the press in recent months but most of them explain the concept in the full article but this is just an irresponsible work of fiction. I have no words.

FromageRouge · 29/09/2022 17:49

@Highfivemum

^”If you use electricity, but don’t use gas for your heating
Those households who are connected to the electricity network but who use fuels other than gas, such as heating oil, to heat their homes will still receive support through the Energy Price Guarantee for their electricity costs, as well as the Energy Bills Support Scheme.^

“If you are not able to receive a support for your heating costs through the Energy Price Guarantee (for example because you live in an area of the UK that is not served by the gas grid ), we will also provide an additional payment of £100 to compensate for the rising costs of other fuels such as heating oil.

“This is intended to guarantee you will receive support equivalent to those on both the electricity and gas grid for the total cost of your energy.”

When dealing with the current crop of idiots in gov’t, the best approach is Доверяй, но проверяй.

Trust, but verify.

Did Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves get it wrong?

Starmer said [Labour's] plan would mean people would not pay a "penny more" on their energy bills later this year...

www.politicshome.com/news/article/labour-lays-out-energy-overhaul-to-stop-costofliving-crisis-at-source

Rachel Reeves has said that people in the UK will not see their costs increase by “a single penny” under Labour’s plan to tackle rapidly rising gas and electricity bills.

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2022 18:07

Liz Truss is a fucking idiot who doesn't even understand her own policies.

Or she's a liar.

Either way, it's not good.

caringcarer · 29/09/2022 18:07

Stupid Liz has got it wrong again. She says she had to act because people won't be able to heat their house. People won't have a house to heat with mortgage price increases and everyone has to renew a fix at some point. I have read between 2 and 2 1/2 million households will have their fix expire in next 15 months by Dec 2023.

Explaintome · 29/09/2022 18:11

She actually said no family will pay more than £2500pa?

Or what exactly is it she said?

SRS29 · 29/09/2022 18:15

Think the OP clearly knows this isn't true and is stirring up a response....don't bite

Oblomov22 · 29/09/2022 18:16

Well that's bullshit. Ours is £224 already.

But it's write to point it out if Truss has been repeatedly (deliberately?) getting it wrong in her radio interviews?

megletthesecond · 29/09/2022 18:19

No. She's bending the facts.
The price per unit is capped but households still pay for what they use.

The energy cap isn't an all you eat buffet.

Yes she did, I am not sure if she's deliberately misleading people or she just has no understanding of how it works. Either way.....

Explaintome · 29/09/2022 18:22

So I looked it up. What she said on Radio Kent today (she's been doing multiple local radio broadcasts today) was:

“We have taken action by the government stepping in, making sure that nobody is paying fuel bills of more than £2,500.”

Which is just blatantly plainly wrong and a completely outrageous lie.

Also £2500 is still a lot!!

user6497219 · 29/09/2022 18:22

Poor Martin Lewis has to keep coming out and correcting it, it's worrying that she has no clue, I wouldn't think it was deliberate

It's hard to believe its deliberate, but I'm not financial expert and I didn't write the policy, but I know exactly what the energy cap means. I've thought the all the accusations of stupidity had a touch of misogyny about them, but maybe not.

hellcatspangle · 29/09/2022 18:29

Blimey not this one again 🤦‍♀️
