It’s not looking good is it?

Cost of living crisis
Choice between heating v eating
Pound dramatically falling
Higher interest rates
NHS on brink of collapse

And now the warning of a flu-covid “twindemic” this Winter

It’s all quite overwhelming and sad and seems to be never ending 😞

Liz Truss didn't need to do any of this right now though. I bet it wouldn't have happened under Rishi Sunak.

I'm getting on a bit and have been around the block many times OP. If it's any consolation my attitude is 'meh' to the whole situation.

I've lived through better and I've lived through worse and I'm not going to get stressed and sad because what is the point.

How old are you? I can't remember things being much worse and I'm pretty old. We've had bad economic situations but I can't remember public services falling apart to the degree they have. I've never heard people say there's no point in calling the police or trying to get a doctor's appointment. To have that and a dire economic situation at the same time is surely unprecedented. But they'll be people coming on here saying it would be even worse under Labour 🙄.

DaSilvaP · 29/09/2022 08:41

I've heard recently this joke:
"What's the difference between a conspiracy theory and fact-checked facts?"
"Currently about 6 months"
Just another conspiracy theory?

Exactly. She’s taken a bad situation and made it terrible. The gaslighting on this thread by certain posters is appalling.

Its important to go through bad times. The quieter wiser ones will ride it out

My son has had his mortgage offer withdrawn; he now has no chance in hell of getting on the property ladder.

My elderly parents live rurally and can’t get a flu or covid vaccine as their gp practice “no longer offer them” and all our local pharmacies are booked up. We have a Boots pharmacy four miles away that have advised me to try again at the end of October.

My dad needs a knee replacement and has been waiting since 2019, he’s in pain and can barely walk.

Our rent has increased and I’m worried sick about how we will manage.

But thanks, I will remind myself that if we were wiser we would keep quiet and “ride it out”. Hmm

Economic downturns happen. It's life. In fact it's important to go through bad times because we learn from them.

Attitude is everything. Even bad times (maybe even especially bad times) give us opportunities to make our lives better. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Angry victims won't see that. They'll stay angry. The quiet, wiser ones will see it for what it is and ride it out, and when the world turns again - as it will - they will thrive.

Bollocks to that idea that quiet people are the survivors. Well channelled anger is what leads to survival. The quiet ones are often the ones who sink without a trace.

Buzzinwithbez · 28/09/2022 22:03

Why?

Because the more antibodies your body makes the better it can resist infections. If you subsequently catch flu or Covid vaccinated people shouldn’t become as seriously ill as unvaccinated.

BillyJollyWandy · 29/09/2022 08:54

It's not the best no. I hope that we can all make it through if we pull together.

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2022 08:55

If this was a Labour Party in powder the right wing press would be all over it asking for heads on sticks

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2022 08:55

Power

flamingogold · 29/09/2022 08:55

But it's okay as the government said on the radio that there is no crisis. So everything is clearly fine Hmm

I feel like the media have been out of control the past 5 years. Ultimately the media rules the roost in life. If the media could just stop so would do many of our problems.

Are you serious? How would the media not reporting on daily life change piss poor government policy? Would it have prevented a global pandemic? Stopped Russia invading Ukraine? Ensured Trump didn't get another term in office? Seen Johnson actually turn up to do his job?

Anything else it would have changed?

MaybeIWillFuckOffThen · 29/09/2022 08:57

@Kissingfrogs25 is very invested in soothing the growing anger of the masses. I can only assume this is due to her being one of the people doing very nicely thank you from the status quo (mortgage paid off, pile of savings and investments managed by hedge funds who are raking it in due to betting against the British economy, grown up kids set to inherit a good whack from the overinflated value of the property they bought cheap back in the 80s - boomer basically). The one thing that could destabilise the comfortable lifestyle of such people is if enough people get furious enough to vote in a radical left wing government and/or riot in the streets. So caaaaaalm down, nothing to see here, listen to Classic FM and go for a run 🤔

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 29/09/2022 08:58

And the economic situation was dire in the 70s, mortgage rates 14-15% , strikes, power cuts but I don’t remember it being impossible to get a GP appointment or anyone being told there were no ambulances available. This time everything is going tits up and the Tory government seem hell bent on only protecting the very wealthy.

I can't believe the responses, or rather non-responses, Truss is giving on the radio, it is astounding. We don't have a government at the moment, there is just an empty space where the government should be.

Doormat alert!

This is NOT simply a regular economic downturn - this is government-induced economic harm.

Alexandra2001 · 29/09/2022 09:02

Truss didn't need to do any of this, an OBR forecast, reassurance of the markets beforehand, a measured response in how they plan on reducing debt...

Kwartengs own dept warned him of turmoil and he ignored them.

Now we've BoE buying govt debt because no one else will and this will have to keep happening unless he reverses.

I think after the party conf he will be gone, too many Tory MPs are going to be getting very nervous over this.

I do like the head in sand approach of many posters, in RL, ignoring problems never always ends well.....

Blossomtoes · 29/09/2022 09:03

My son has had his mortgage offer withdrawn; he now has no chance in hell of getting on the property ladder.

He’s dodged a bullet. House prices are predicted to go down by 10 to 15%. He’ll get another mortgage offer at some point for a better/cheaper house. Anyone who bought in the last five years or so will be in deep shit.

Try booking your parents’ covid boosters through the NHS website @SmileyClare. We were offered a huge choice of appointments.

Thisbastardcomputer · 29/09/2022 09:06

I had a total nervous breakdown in 2008 and I blame my then addiction to watching the news and economy.

It wasn't so much of a hobby but a job requirement, I worked in export finance and it helped enormously with a keeping abreast of ever changing situations throughout the world, but I left that job mid 2006. By that time it had become a habit.

Stop watching the news and skip reading articles on social media and newspapers who whip up frenzy. Live modestly, one foot in front of the other.

Lonelycrab · 29/09/2022 09:08

This is NOT simply a regular economic downturn - this is government-induced economic harm.

Thats exactly what it is. Our own government is purposely damaging our own economy, for their own personal gain. They know exactly what they’re doing.

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2022 09:08

My son bought a house this week. Finally moved in yesterday
His on a fixed rate mortgage, luckily
It might plummet in value, but at least it's his , for now anyway.
Might be in negative equity by next year though

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2022 09:09

I hate them for doing this to people though
It is cruel and insane

40somethingx · 29/09/2022 09:10

Pinkpeony2 · 28/09/2022 22:42

Look, there are a fair few unfortunate things that has caused this economic crisis.
No denying that.
BUT the media since covid have massively ramped up the fear. It’s literally panic stations over absolutely everything and those who are easily anxious or who read the news at face value are getting very much affected.
Once the fear level has ‘run out’ on one topic, is straight ok to the next. And people are lapping it up because we have all been shaken to our core over recent years on how quickly the whole country can suddenly change.
One week work, school, enjoying yourself out and about. The next lockdown and you can’t even drive where you want anymore or see your mum/ dad / family for weeks and months. Then it happens again and again.
Totally destabilising. MSM is playing that for all it’s worth. Relishing every drop of panic and fear. Living off your worries in the hope that you will click and watch.
Turn it off. Turn off all notifications on your phone / laptop. Don’t go to any news apps or websites.
Anything really important you will find out about via mumsnet or other social media or someone will tell you.
Live your life the best you can. Enjoy each day and take pleasure in the small things.
It feels so so much better to turn it off.

THIS!

Luminousnose · 29/09/2022 09:10

I grew up in the 60s and 70s, so yes I remember all the stuff going on then. I also worked opposite County Hall in the early 80s and saw Ken Livingstone’s unemployment figures go up on the roof every day. The current situation is bad, but MSM makes it worse. There was no social media in those days so all the information came from the newspapers or the TV (there was less of that too). Nowadays it is so hard to get away from it all.

It’s been a veritable shit storm the past few years and Liz T clearly isn’t helping things, but let’s be honest they were looking pretty grim already. I agree that ‘we’ as a nation will get through it, but in the meantime many people are going to have their lives fucked - even if only temporarily - and it is both naive and disrespectful to pretend that isn’t going to happen.

I, as you might realise, despise the Tories but do you really think this is planned for personal gain or rather pure incompetence and arrogance?

I don't know much about Kwarteng, he certainly hasn't any real financial experience, he also comes across as very arrogant (i.e i made it as a black man, why haven't you type) but Truss just comes across as a complete idiot, her Cheese speech, her trade deals (that wreck UK farming) her flip flopping on Royals, Brexit, libdem to far right Conservative.... all smack of someone who doesn't really give much thought to anything at all.
