Cost of living crisis
Choice between heating v eating
Pound dramatically falling
Higher interest rates
NHS on brink of collapse

And now the warning of a flu-covid “twindemic” this Winter

It’s all quite overwhelming and sad and seems to be never ending 😞

I recommend Classic FM, beautiful soothing - a world away from the shrill hysterical ranting on the BBC and Sky. Your life will be transformed immediately and everything will feel so much better instantly.

I have plenty of ways to relax.

I just don’t spend my life in denial. Feeling angry is healthy, I am not in the business of suppressing or hiding from things. Better to tackle it head on.

As a child who grew up under Thatcher in a poor household, I beg to differ. It’s the children who will experience that and are experiencing it now that make me feel sick.

And by poor I mean poor. Sometimes we would have only flour and porridge in the house with no means to cook it. The fridge would be empty. And I would go around to friends houses and it would be the same story as mine.

So to me, it is very real. Those who downplay it are those who are the ones in denial.

But you didn't starve, you are here to tell the tale about your porridge days!

It is called resilience, and yes we struggled in the 1970s with no power, little food and many other issues. Throughout history this has happened, and people come through it. It will be nothing like the difficulties during the world wars etc, we will be just fine and you will be able to eat more than flour and porridge of that I am certain!!!

i do t watch the news, MSM is driving mass panic , one crisis after another, whether real or not is irrelevant. Remember loo roll crisis, panic buying, petrol shortage crisis not so long ago? It’s like MSM realise the power they have to fabricate a crisis , to destabilise and they use it to create fear and drama and news because they know they can now, since the last few years. We will never be short of a crisis, so it will be one after another, because the climate crisis will always be there, it has no end goal, so that will be a permanent fixture to keep people in fear.

All of this ^

The general public hiding from the news is a disaster. If people took more interest in real news and made more effort to understand, we might not be here in the first place.

You are only damaging yourself with anger, better to be proactive.

Absolutely absurd tin foil hat thinking. Don’t look up and all that.

I'm getting on a bit and have been around the block many times OP. If it's any consolation my attitude is 'meh' to the whole situation.

I've lived through better and I've lived through worse and I'm not going to get stressed and sad because what is the point.

How so?

Anger is a normal emotion. It’s unhealthy to lash out with it and unhealthy to hide from it.

You don’t know me or my history.

One thing I have observed in life is that many people who are damaged are the ones who keep trying to gaslight, hide and obscure reality and then get irritated when others do not.

This government has fucked our country. This is not the time to stick on classic FM.

Kissingfrogs25 · 29/09/2022 07:36

Read the FT and Times, Telegraph and there you can read in depth analysis in a calm and measured way, without the hysteria and come to your own conclusions. Keep away from the news channels, they are just creating drama out of everything to keep people tuned in.

We are most likely to be in a far better position than many other countries in the west this winter. I am feeling quite confident we will ride it out.

Thanks I didn’t know about that book.

I know people might think I’m a bit conspiracy theorist, but I do think ‘blob’ was out to get Trump, Boris, now Liz and Mark my words, Giorgio will be next. MSM and big tech and their agenda are driving the western hive mind.

I think you are a lot of a conspiracy theorist.

These people were 'got' because they were/are shit. It is not more complicated than that.

Denying anger is not healthy at all. Suppression of anger often leads to depression and inertia.

Being proactive is often what follows anger anyway - many campaigners are motivated by their anger. Righteous anger is valuable.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2022 07:41

It is fascinating to see some people continually spin reality as doom mongering/media issues. I wonder what it would be like to meet them in real life, who they are and what their background is, that so clearly blinkers either in what they actually believe or what they at least type.

The Telegraph and Times? Absolutely not.

“We” on average may well do but if you get beyond averages (and anyone with basic understanding of GCSEs should know what averages are) then people will not.

Averages allow people to ignore the reality of their fellow citizens starving and freezing this winter. It is a way of disassociating from the reality for many.

I find that incredibly awful - growing up, I know that on average, on paper the economy survived but at what cost?

You won’t get that in the Times or Telegraph. At least have the decency to suggest a range of papers across the spectrum instead of a narrow right wing window into the world. I read a shit ton of papers and journals, I am even reading books by Truss/Kwarteng/Mogg because it is important for me to understand their rationale even though I vehemently disagree with it.

Some perspective is required.

You are overreacting, but if you want to 'feel' your anger, go ahead. Putin is a great place to start, as he is responsible for much of this.

We are at war, no one is saying it out loud, but we certainly are. Look at the Nord Stream attack yesterday near Denmark, and the deliberate crashing of the energy markets. The west are at war with Russia and there is going to be consequences, it is up to you how you deal with your emotions. You could help the effort with Ukrainians, you can offer to volunteer in a food bank. There are many ways to react - but simply sitting there stewing in anger will make you ill and ruin your relationships and damage your body.

Stop reading the news it's all doom and gloom.

I've deleted the sky app off my phone and I'm just focusing on being happy as I can be

And actually I did starve, I just didn’t starve to death.

seriously, I want better than that quite frankly for children of today, especially when I see millionaires vacuuming up the wealth when they don’t need quite as much.

lurchermummy · 29/09/2022 07:54

How many of you lived through the 70s/80s? They were shit. High unemployment, high inflation, I lived in an area where the mines were being shut down, we had power cuts, bin strikes, bread strikes, constant doom and gloom about acid rain and the Cold War, riots, the Falkland war, I could go on. Yes it's crap now and Covid was obviously unique but a lot of the doom
and gloom is media generated - it sells papers.

Softplayhooray · 29/09/2022 08:02

OP you forgot nuclear war!

MultiTulip · 29/09/2022 08:15

Unless you’re in your late 80s, there’s a decent chance that this will in fact be worse than anything you’ve lived through for a decent proportion of the country. This could be the worst decline in living standards in your lifetime. You might be lucky and escape the worst effects personally, but the further decline in public services, rise in crime, rampant inflation will have some effect even if you think you’re insulated.

I've just decided to read the newspaper I subscribe to in the mornings only. Switch to a book in the evening.
Honestly, I am finding it all very stressful.

This is such a good plan otherwise internet algorithms just feed you news they think you are interested in therefore scaremongering you and putting you in a mind tunnel

GladysGladioli · 29/09/2022 08:28

Economic downturns happen. It's life. In fact it's important to go through bad times because we learn from them.

Attitude is everything. Even bad times (maybe even especially bad times) give us opportunities to make our lives better. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Angry victims won't see that. They'll stay angry. The quiet, wiser ones will see it for what it is and ride it out, and when the world turns again - as it will - they will thrive.
