I'm probably going through some hormonal changes which isn't helping my mood 😔 but the last few years has been been proper shit and now the foreseeable future looks shit too. I just feel demotivated and overworked, underpaid and stretched as are my colleagues. Food and fuel prices are rediculous and I actually feel sick everytime I go to the supermarket. I can't get a doctors appointment, my dentist has gone private without telling me. Public transport where I live is diabolical buses aren't turning up yet I'm paying £60 a month for my schools bus pass, taxis are charging the earth if you can get one and then refusing to do long distances. The council think it's a good idea to do road works all at once causing more chaos and stress in the mornings so everyday feels like I'm playing road blocks. Im now anxious and stressed about rising interest rates and pissed off that I probably won't afford a holiday again for the 4th year because I'm just trying to survive and make it through the day/month or fucking year!

I think quite a lot of people are under the illusion that it’s just us, Europe’s not having a very good time at all either at the moment

I can confirm from an EU country that prices have risen for power and therefore everything, interest rates are rising and house prices predicted to drop next year. We are exposed to the same global issues arising from the war. One thing to note though is that everything was always more expensive here than in England, everything could be sourced cheaper there. This is no longer the case and I find increasingly that some things are more expensive in England that’s just plain old Brexit.

There are, however, no loud car exhausts and services etc are working as normal. We are not exposed to brutal Tory cuts in every area of life, we pay more tax though.

tentinginmarch · 28/09/2022 12:54

@mondegreen no I didn't say that. I said people struggling to stay afloat don't pay the 45% rate.
I have no idea how much the people commenting earn!
I'm not arrogant. Far from it. (Nor am I a 45% payer).

tentinginmarch · 28/09/2022 12:55

@Dreamwhisper so do I. I want public services funded. But how on earth are you going to do that?!

Harva · 28/09/2022 12:57

But ‘we’ voted for this….

Solongtoshort · 28/09/2022 13:01

My god l could off written this, it’s my day off l got in at 9.30 am from the school run and l sat her thinking about life and my head I’d hurting, l decided to browse MN as there is usually someone with a similar problem and l take advice from that post.

But OMG my head is banging and l have had enough today……..

  1. My boss is a prick but met with HR today.
  2. Dh job is under threat.
  3. 3 lots of road works to get to school it’s like a 10-15 min drive that takes 40 mins now and far to far to walk.
  4. low level bulling at school for my Ds who is 10 but he needs to stock up for himself instead of crying, he is giving them the reaction they want but is to scared of getting in trouble at school, at home he is really argumentative when he gets going.
  5. The price of EVERYTHING…:in credit by £450 on the gas and electricity we have the tv/ virgin and the internet box and the oven and fridge freezer turned on all the time nothing else unless it’s in use, had an email to say we are using less than the houses around us so they will investigate and the still wasn’t an extra £140 from us, l know £60 of that will come back but then l have to manage my other bills to accommodate this.
  6. finding a suitable high school and 11+ results, l wish he had never done it.
  7. Do l or don’t l want/need an air fryer to save money, if l do which one, everyone recommends them. I baffled.
  8. l feel like a failure and my head is hurting.

This is a miserable country with shit quality of life. Add the ongoing crisis and it gets suicidal. So yes it is one the worse places to be right now.

I have not experienced food shortages but I buy online. Apart from everything else smells of third world.

This is such a ridiculous comment - have you any idea how insane you sound?

Rising fuel costs are not the fault of the government - it wouldn't have mattered who was in power - these rising costs are global.

I for one feel very lucky to have been born in the U.K. Anyone who seriously thinks we are in one of the worse countries in the world needs a large reality check.

Beaniebeemer · 27/09/2022 23:27

I’m totally with you. I could have written that myself. Don’t get me started on roadworks. Minor in the grand scheme of things, but you can’t move for them near where I live and they are seriously disruptive!

Roadworks are at least temporary though. Be grateful they're doing them, they'll likely be the last roadworks you'll see for a while, spending cuts will mean councils/highways agency can't afford them soon.

tentinginmarch · 28/09/2022 13:07

Also... for those complaining about roadworks - isn't that what you want your money to be spent on?!? Improving road quality? I know it's a pain but seriously?

AStar98 · 28/09/2022 13:17

I'm with you OP, sick of hearing bad news, disaster after disaster. Try to keep going but have found myself today getting both ends of the knife from my manager at work. Because of his incompetencies and lacking progress I get in the neck because he's got it in the neck from his boss. Add on to that that I'm taking ONE day off tomorrow which he seems to be extremely jealous about and is trying to make me feel bad about doing when I've had it booked for 4 months!

Is it one of those days? Weeks? Months? Hope so.

Dreamwhisper · 28/09/2022 13:17

Goldpaw · 28/09/2022 12:39

What is the point of cutting taxes. All it means is investment in our country get cut. I don't want tax cuts. I want corporations and the well off to pay their taxes. I want to pay taxes because I want to live in a country where the infrastructure is invested in, and where there's a good quality of living.

Exactly! This is typical Tory rhetoric, "individualism" for us, but socialism is actually fine if you're already rich/are a huge corporation... Makes my eyes water. I have never been so upset and angered at every single announcement I see that bloody woman make.

antelopevalley · 28/09/2022 13:18

Things are worse here.

tentinginmarch · 28/09/2022 12:55

Not cutting taxes right now is a good start

sheilads105 · 28/09/2022 13:29

Never vote Tory. Never buy The Sun, Daily Mail or Telegraph. Write to your MP. Make some noise.

DisgruntledApothecarist · 28/09/2022 13:55

I’m with you OP. It’s relentless. Add in skeleton staff everywhere and rubbish education some of our kids are getting, I’m at a low today.

pantsofshame · 28/09/2022 14:00

I totally agree OP. After years of watching every penny (due to paying for DH to go back in to education to retrain for a better job, poorly paid maternity leave, high child-care costs, trying to get on the property ladder etc) this was supposed to be the time where we would reap the reward for our hard work and we expected to have more spare cash and do be able to afford some nice/fund things. But instead all the extra income we get (and then some) is being spent on the increased cost of essentials.

I know that we are actually pretty fortunate- at least we can currently afford the essentials. It must be even shitter for anyone in the position we were in a few years ago. But what makes me most pissed off is that I voted against Brexit and have never voted Tory (and even if I did, would not have supported Truss) but am still expected to be polite to friends and family members who did.

DosCervezas · 28/09/2022 14:02

With you there.
Problem now with roadworks is that every little hole or bit of maintenance usually means a risk assessment and temporary traffic lights in the name of safety and covering themselves.

BlueMongoose · 28/09/2022 14:05

We're better off than many and should be able to manage, so I have no right to moan for myself, but just hearing about how difficult the circumstancs of other peopel are is making me not just depressed, but sick, and often sick with rage. I was hearing last week of a kid who is a sole carer for a mum with MS, who had to take time off school to assist his Mum to carry food back from a food bank. What kind of a country is this?

I'm through with being polite to any of them who don't openly admit they were wrong, or conned.

Kentgirl2525 · 28/09/2022 10:21

Right wing… ru kidding? All the parties are very left nowadays. They’re all as bad as each other so there’s no point in putting labour against conservatives etc. the saddest thing is we have no choice. People clearly keep voting conservatives because the other options are even worse not because they actually want them!

You must be joking, the Conservatives are not left wing especially at the moment! It's full on Britannia Unchained. We do have a choice, Starmer is a much better choice than Truss. Sunak was a better choice than Truss, despite his shortcomings. Don't disempower people by telling people there is no choice. We all deserve better than this shitshow.

bluetongue · 28/09/2022 11:48

Non UK mumsnetter here. Why are the supermarket shelves half empty? I keep half an eye on UK news but it’s hard to keep up. Is it as bad as during Covid?

Egg section is a bit sparse here in Australia at the moment but otherwise okay (if extortionately priced). We had really bad shortages during Covid here.

Combination of lack of foreign labour in farming, mostly due to brexit, and brexit import paperwork and customs charges problems with imported goods, due to, guess what, brexit. Plus transport costs not helping.

DIanaRiggFan · 28/09/2022 14:34

I’ve had enough too. It’s just one shitter after another. Seriously, what is the point?!

feel like buggering off to live in a commune

Try dealing with it for 3+ years and then see how you feel. It has been utter misery. Some days the roads are so gridlocked that staff are still stuck in their cars trying to get off the site over an hour after they finished work. Then still have the commute home to get through. Awful planning with no regard with how it effects people day to day.

Wiseflower · 28/09/2022 14:45

I completely understand your post Bettyboo12. It is worrying times, with interest rates going up. The Mortgage companies can pull the rug under any deals to increase interest rates. This is allowed to happen.
Yes, other countries in EU are having to put up with rising costs too, but the interest rates have been stable.
In the UK, the Bank of England has toyed with interest rates to save the current government from being a failure. Back in the 80s, 90s, it soared to 17% , 14% - while main European countries had a stable rate of 1 to 2%.

We are paying extortionately high rents - in other words - paying someone else's mortgage for their second house.

Affordable housings are small and cramped. Most new larger family houses are not affordable for the average tax payer and are considered luxury. We live in the world of Developers.
Fracking is going to happen - digging everywhere for oil.

Politicians are allowed to have Tax Havens. Dyson threatened to take his manufacturing to the Far East if no Brexit. When Brexit happened, he moved it to the Far East anyway. He lives abroad with Tax Havens just like all the other millionaires who dictate to the new Tory government.

Yes, I am truly pissed off.

FTMFML · 28/09/2022 14:48

And I keep getting effing adverts to BOOK YOUR DISNEY GETAWAY FOR 2023

.... you gotta be shitting me I'm just trying to make it to the new year without being broke!

Wiseflower · 28/09/2022 14:48

Most roadwork is not road improvement but digging up road to lay new cables for new property developments. The property developer pay the councils to hire the road to dig it up. Most of the time, you'll be lucky to see road workers.
