I'm probably going through some hormonal changes which isn't helping my mood 😔 but the last few years has been been proper shit and now the foreseeable future looks shit too. I just feel demotivated and overworked, underpaid and stretched as are my colleagues. Food and fuel prices are rediculous and I actually feel sick everytime I go to the supermarket. I can't get a doctors appointment, my dentist has gone private without telling me. Public transport where I live is diabolical buses aren't turning up yet I'm paying £60 a month for my schools bus pass, taxis are charging the earth if you can get one and then refusing to do long distances. The council think it's a good idea to do road works all at once causing more chaos and stress in the mornings so everyday feels like I'm playing road blocks. Im now anxious and stressed about rising interest rates and pissed off that I probably won't afford a holiday again for the 4th year because I'm just trying to survive and make it through the day/month or fucking year!

The justification is attraction of talent to the UK. Incentivising entrepreneurship etc.
Whether it works and is the right thing to do only future will tell, but there was justification - it's called the free market economy.
I'm a Tory voter. I think the rate shouldn't have been cut, I think times are too tough for that. In my opinion that's a mistake but equally raising it to 55% is totally erroneous because although it will gather more in the short term, the UK will not be an attractive place. It will also cost in the long term as less money is earned/ spent.
What we have to remember is to be objective.
All these Tory haters going on about the 45% rate which doesn't affect them personally, but forgetting to mention their tax rate is reducing - as have NI contributions too.

How does this attract talent? Why do we need more bankers? Would People who are earning the amounts that really benefit from these tax cuts really want to come here?

This budget is growth inhibiting. The tax cuts at the lower end make such little difference to overall quality of life in the face of rising costs that they may as well not have bothered. People will hunker down and stop spending. There is no room for risk - those that were prepared to take it and be entrepreneurial will be put off as the margins are now so small and there are no buffers. Public services which are already on their knees will suffer more and staff sickness rates will increase as more burden is placed on them to cover the deficits. People simply do not have any more to give.

The cost of importing with the pound tanking and the increase in running costs has got to put pressure on existing businesses. Some must also be questioning their viability already.

There are no incentives right now unless you are already rich. What an absolute shit show.

2019 pre Covid and pre Russian war seems like a lifetime ago sometimes.

Mumoblue · 28/09/2022 08:37

I am very frustrated. It seems like I’m just constantly having to live with the consequences of other peoples decisions. I’ve never voted Tory, I voted against Brexit, I don’t want any of this shit.

Iliveonahill · 28/09/2022 08:38

I agree OP. I’ve worked really hard. I’ve saved little pots for emergencies. I have paid into a pension. I had hoped to start reducing my hours as I approach 60. That’s not going to happen. My fuel is costing more than I budget for, my energy bills are eating into my savings and my fixed rate mortgage finishes early next year and I’m dreading what I will have to pay then. It all seems pointless - we go to work - we come home, wrap up in blankets and then do it again. I know I’m better off than a lot of people but really…….I feel that we are all being screwed.

Bettyboo12 · 28/09/2022 08:40

I didnt vote for any of it either. I feel so broken worse then covid times.

Am with you on the shitshow but I don’t see any food shortages! Went to Tesco yesterday and was packed with food as normal. Where do you all live. No chicken?

StopStartStop · 28/09/2022 08:42

OP, that's an accurate assessment of our present circumstances. Yes, I'm fed up. Yes, I'm demotivated. But I survived the eighties and I have an inner core of steel. So have you. It will show itself.

MoCaine · 28/09/2022 08:43

the old f*ck you jack, i'm alright is in full effect.

DorchaAndLouis · 28/09/2022 08:14

Don't turn it on then. No one's making you watch it.
You won't find anything reassuring or life enhancing on social media or 24 hour news, just a load of opinions and arguments.
Disaster predictions get clicks, we're all being manipulated.

They aren't predictions though, it is reality. It is happening right now. We are living the disaster.

TheUsualChaos · 28/09/2022 08:43

Yep I feel very much the same.
Ditto to the road works too. My commute has been hell for 3 years now (apart from the first lock down when the roads were so quiet). It just adds yet more stress and exhaustion to my day.

My parents weren't big earners but we had a lovely home, I was able to have my own horse growing up, we went on holiday every year (not luxury but nice family hols). I went to uni, got a job, did a post grad so I could progress in order to be able to afford a similar quality of life for my own family. 10 years ago that was looking achievable but now with the relative salary cut compared to inflation, cost of living etc we can't afford anywhere near what my parents could and they did it on just one salary.

I've worked so hard as I wanted to give my children the same sort of life and now it's just completely out of our reach. It's so demoralising.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/09/2022 08:44

We could have attracted more talent by not restricting freedom of movement!

Sometimessometime · 28/09/2022 08:45

The idea of "talent" in investment banking has been empirically proven to be a load of crap. It's been shown that stockbrokers are little better than a random selector at predicting trends. They only do well when they get inside info, like shorting the pound just before a disastrous budget. It's play money, and the idea that someone needs to earn half a million a year, instead of a quarter of a million is utter bollocks.

I was talking to a TA at our school yesterday. She said how cold she was. She looked frightened for the future. This is a woman who is the kindest person I've ever met, who the kids all adore, because she goes above and beyond every day. And she can't afford to be warm. Maybe that's the kind of talent we should try to attract?

Are you kidding ‘ no one is coming to the uk’?! That’s exactly the problem- plenty are coming here but they’re the wrong sort and expecting everything for free. Seriously how can we house them, educate them, provide them with healthcare when we can’t even for ourselves now. The single most important thing is your health and the NHS is in such a bad way it’s scary beyond belief. We just have too many people coming here and an already over stretched NHS cannot cope with this influx of people. If you saw what I saw on a daily basis of unregulated mostly young men walking freely from the beach into town you would REALLY be scared! Honestly, why people can’t see this problem is beyond me. I have to move now because this situation is getting so serious I fear for my safety especially at night as we’ve had so many problems from these arrivals. The police appear too scared to do anything and I cannot see how my child could now grow up here. All I ever did was work hard, and do everything right and I feel like what was the point. My neighbours on benefits have more than I do and their benefits just go up in line with other costs rising. I worked for the NHS since leaving school and seriously think what is the point! Hard work and being a good citizen doesn’t seem to pay off.

Nemo28 · 28/09/2022 08:49

I totally understand the world has gone to shit , everyone is being selfish , no1 is kind to anyone anymore , they just think of themselves and are too busy judging other people's lives instead of living there own ,

But things will work out they've got to in the end just try and have that bit of hope

I’m not far from you. I see young men walking up motorways having jumped off a lorry. Our high street is a no go zone with young men aimlessly hanging around with nothing to do. Women and girls avoid that area now. So I disagree when I read that no one wants to come here. We have 100s of new visitors everyday that the police, the councils and charities and schools and NHS have to deal with. It is 100s every single day - don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t. Kent is a different place now.

slowquickstep · 28/09/2022 08:55

I feel sorry for anyone living south of the Watford gap, having lived in the Home Counties i know how bad life is there. I am bloody lucky as i can get a Doctors appointment when i ask for one ( sometimes within 15 minutes) i have an NHS dentist with 6 monthly check ups. We have a fantastic Social care team for elderly relatives and a choice of good hospitals within 60 miles ( that's not far in rural Scotland) Our local shops have everything i need and our bus/train service is reliable. Our hospitality trade is suffering due to people not eating out as much and of course that affects the local economy. I feel sorry for those with a mortgage and childcare costs and i can only hope fuel doesn't rise any higher. I feel it is time we took to the streets, not just a few hardy souls but the whole country needs to stand up and shout.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/09/2022 08:56

Yep. Add to it a government seemingly intent on deliberately trashing the economy and its hard to see a way out of it all.

newbienel · 28/09/2022 09:00

Welcome to brexit Britain. It's time to wake up and stop voting Tory.

blobby10 · 28/09/2022 09:05

Another head nodding here. I'm lucky - I have a house with a mortgage fixed at 1.9% for another 2 years. My energy prices are fixed until Jun 23.And my children are adults and generally looking after themselves but they still need somewhere to call 'home' with their own rooms until they can afford to get on the property ladder. And my job is now not secure - the family business has run for 75 years but I've just had to use the last of my own savings to pay this months wages and I took a pay cut last month. We may have to go to a 4 or even 3 day week which will cripple the small number of staff that we have got. Unlike other tough times, every business we speak to in all the sectors and many different countries we cover are going through similar difficulties

I voted Tory all my life but could not justify doing so again - don't know who I would vote for as they all seem to be great at the talk without walking the walk.

CliffordMystery · 28/09/2022 09:06

Are you an optician, OP?

Sounds very much like my experience. I worked for a large multiple for a long time and was used to getting full sick pay.

Since then I have worked for two different independent practices and I was quite shocked that both only offered SSP. I actually didn’t realise until I’d been there 5 years at one of them! Fortunately it wasn’t an issue that came up until Covid anyway.

It is one of the big reasons I decided to go back to working for a big company again though - it just feels more secure really should anything happen in the future.

CliffordMystery · 28/09/2022 09:07

Sorry - wrong thread!

ByTheGrace · 28/09/2022 09:08

So I disagree when I read that no one wants to come here.

I was the pp who mentioned no one is coming here, but I was responding to an earlier poster who claimed the tax reduction for the rich was to attract people here. I was meaning wealthy professionals, not people crossing the channel by any means. Poor refugees will always come, because quite frankly their situation is often worse than ours, plus we speak English, which invariably they do or they already have people here.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 28/09/2022 09:08

I plan to encourage my girls to emigrate. I may do so as well if it keeps getting worse.

it’s the lack of supplies in the supermarkets that get me. I shop at Aldi, I’ve been in on many different days/times. The stock just isn’t there in ours.

Hillary17 · 28/09/2022 09:10

Feel the same. We moved back to the UK three years ago and it’s been a downward spiral ever since. Our mortgage keeps me awake at night, cost of food, living in a village that the local council are destroying with awful road plans, poor public services, can’t get a dentist, doctor hangs up the phone most times as too busy. Honestly I don’t think we’ll stick it out much longer.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 28/09/2022 09:10

Yup it’s shit, this country is a shit show.
