The Labour Party conference has voted to ditch the First the Past the Post electoral system and support replacing it with a “fairer proportional electoral system”

This is big, big, big.
There must have been some very serious stuff going on behind the scenes.

That's what you get when you ditch a proven vote winner like Boris for a clown.

That’s amazing. Truss has approval ratings of just 27%. So it really is the economy, stupid.

Notonthestairs · 26/09/2022 21:56

"That’s amazing. Truss has approval ratings of just 27%. So it really is the economy, stupid."

Johnson's ratings "peaked" at 22 didn't they? So Truss still has work to do.

DowningStreetParty · 26/09/2022 22:00

Praying for a general election in the UK as soon as possible. Unelected Truss smashing up the economy is just horrendous to watch.
Italy’s election results show how the right wing parties all profited from working together and the left wing purists did not agree to do that, with very scary extreme right wing outcomes. It will be absolute carnage if Truss gets actually voted in, please let there be a general election soon so these psychopaths leave office. But please god let the left take very seriously the need to work together to counter any similar Tory and other parties’ election strategies that may emerge.

Blossomtoes · 26/09/2022 22:02

Amen to that @DowningStreetParty.

Notonthestairs · 26/09/2022 22:03

Agree.

tobee · 26/09/2022 22:07

God what do the 4/10 think?

tobee · 26/09/2022 22:07

God what do the 4/10 think?

Busy celebrating the scrapping of the alcohol duty increase?

YogaLite · 26/09/2022 22:14

Can't believe Truss studied economics and qualified as an accountant!

TokyoSushi · 26/09/2022 22:22

Oh hello! Here you are! What a bloody mess, again! How does this keep happening? It just gets worse, and worse, and worse. I don't even know where to start!

Blossomtoes · 26/09/2022 22:39

Anyone else think Truss and Kwarteng are sitting in Downing Street saying “Wtf have we done?”

YogaLite · 26/09/2022 22:41

Having sleepless nights for sure!

Totally agree. The priority is getting rid of these criminals. All differences need to be put aside.

DowningStreetParty · 26/09/2022 23:17

I’m lurching between utter relief at Labour looking and sounding like a government in waiting

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/sep/26/labour-conference-starmer-party-financial-responsibility

and anxiety that there’s no cross-party noises coming out nor mention of a commitment to doing all that needs to be done (working with other parties) to keep the Tories out.

If by the time of a GE Labour’s popularity has dipped even a little and if the nationalist parties do well and if the Lib Dems make an electoral comeback- which they surely will on the back of this hugely unpopular conservative government, we have to remember it’s going to be largely for negative reasons that a lot of people won’t want to vote Tory again… I do worry that there could be a split left of centre vote.

Truss with a mandate is just too frightening and chaotic to even think about

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/09/2022 23:48

I can't see them coming back from this for many years.
I suspect they've managed to persuade even the most apathetic electorate to use their vote at the earliest opportunity.

Interestingly the person I know who has always voted tory and thought they always would is now saying enough. We've looked at tactical voting in their area which is as blue as it comes. I think the swing will be bigger than polls are showing as those who support this budget look more deranged and ridiculous everytime they open their mouths.

Even the Royal stories and this morning are being ignored.

tobee · 27/09/2022 00:01

Presumably they can't say they'd form a coalition right now? Anyone got any idea how the nationalists will go re coalition?

Interestingly my constituency has been Tory then (Blair years) surprise Labour with a Labour council. For ages LibDem were always 3rd. Then last ge they got 2nd. Tactical voting? The LibDems have been very confident and visible in the communities but that link (the kindly yuppies one) had Labour taking the seat from the current moderate Tory.

I used to be quite involved with Labour locally but am not now for various reasons.

tobee · 27/09/2022 00:02

Who's going to be turned on by this budget? Not the bulk of most traditional Tories. Not home owners if this is going to cause a property crash.

mibbelucieachwell · 27/09/2022 00:03

Depressingly, someone on Newsnight was saying that the current Labour lead in the polls is the absolute minimum that would get Labour a majority.

In the event of a hung Parliament I hope the Lib Dems would agree to support a Labour government. (As a Scottish person in Scotland who isn't in favour of Scottish independence, it gives me the rage that the SNP MPs who go on and on about how Scotland never gets 'the government it votes for' make it harder for the Labour Party to get into government.)

Blossomtoes · 27/09/2022 00:23

I heard that too and instantly thought it was bollocks. @jgw1 posted a link last week where you could input your postcode and it showed the effect of a 15 point lead on your constituency. My Tory stronghold would become marginal. Quite honestly the Beeb has become so cowed by the Tories I take everything they say with a pinch of salt.
