When are you turning the heating on?

Assuming that you will turn it on at some point, is there a date or a temperature you're waiting for?

It's only 16 degrees inside my house right now and my hands are freezing! But somehow it feels wrong to put the heating on before October.

NE England, about 11 degrees outside and 14 in the kitchen first thing - it's actually fine with a jumper on. The heating will go on for a little while when it's uncomfortably cold to sit in the living room with jumpers and throws, and perhaps for an hour in the morning for showers and breakfast. Heating never on overnight.

makinganavalon · 26/09/2022 11:50

Our house has been around 14 to 16 these last weeks (in far north Scotland).
We not putting our storage heaters on at all this year, we have bought an infra red heater for each room which should slash costs.
I have put it on for half an hour before my DD goes to bed which gets her room (she's in the warmest room of the house) up to 17/18 before bed, and I've put the living room one on for a couple of hours each night which gets the room up for 18. But me and hubby's room is usually 14 day and night and we will most likely be lumping it for the foreseeable.

BadgeronaMoped · 26/09/2022 11:50

We've had ours on before we get up in the morning for the last couple of weeks.

I understand the layering, but how do those who layer cope with showers and baths? Do you heat the bathroom or just get on with it? - I really hate a cold bathroom, that's why I ask.

PinotPony · 26/09/2022 11:51

Not yet. Fluffy socks and blankets have made an appearance.

I'll probably light a fire in the lounge in the next few weeks. Planning on buying oodies and electric blankets.

columbo83 · 26/09/2022 11:52

It's on now. Have had it on in the mornings past few week.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 26/09/2022 11:53

No heating yet but the log burner has been on a couple of days now.

RoachTheHorse · 26/09/2022 11:54

Mines on thermostat and it's been cold enough this last week to start kicking in.

Whiskeypowers · 26/09/2022 11:55

an hour last night while kids were getting bathed and into bed then an hour from 6-7 this morning before they get up.
thankfully it’s just me and the pets here in the day so I just keep busy and put an extra layer on but dreading when it’s so cold the house is chilled so much you feel it even with thick jumpers and socks on everything it will have to go on more then

Bunnyfuller · 26/09/2022 11:58

Today was the first morning that felt cold. But not that cold. Certainly no heating until it starts getting frosty, and then only to help us get up in the morning. Many layers of clothing to go yet before heating is required!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 26/09/2022 11:58

When it's actually cold!

Proper clothes and a blanket if needs be are all that's needed at the moment here. Fed up of DC whinging about being cold, but wandering round with nothing on their feet and normally bare legs!

My aim is Halloween

Atmywitsend29 · 26/09/2022 12:01

When a jumper and a warm drink don't help and the windows are shut.

At the moment, the windows are still open and I'm WFH in PJ bottoms and a hoodie

NormalForNuneaton · 26/09/2022 12:04

We're nowhere near putting it on I don't think.

I've bought myself an oodie (well, cheaper version of) and haven't even worn it yet. I've had the odd evening where I've reached for a blanket whilst watching TV but more from a comfort point of view than from being really cold.

At the moment its 18.6 degrees in the house and teenage DS is in a t-shirt. At night I think we're still on the medium thickness duvets (10 tog?)

Mushroo · 26/09/2022 12:05

I’ll put it on when I’m cold sat at my desk wfh. So far it’s been fine - hoping another couple of weeks!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/09/2022 12:06

Christmas day, just for a treat.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/09/2022 12:07

Mine went on for a little while last night - my excuse was we needed to test the new radiator before the really cold weather kicks in! I'm cold now but resisting putting it on

HairyMothballs · 26/09/2022 12:09

I turned it on yesterday evening, and again this morning. It's 12 degrees here and I'm not going to be cold.

ifonly4 · 26/09/2022 12:09

Currently 18.7c in our living room. We set heating to around 18.5/just under, so wouldn't come on at the moment. I find once it drops to around 17c in the house, unless the sun is out the temperature doesn't rise in the day. We normally put our heating on early October, hoping we can last a few extra days this year.

What do people mean when they talk about 'switching it on' - do you all turn off the thermostat in the summer, or at the boiler? I've never turned anything off, just let it come on as needed, no matter the time of year

Yes we turn it off at the thermostat in the summer. It's just easier than mucking about with the settings.

We consider it "off" at night too, although technically it's set to 12 degrees or something. The end result is the same.

Rosehugger · 26/09/2022 12:26

Ours is programmed to be on for a couple of hours in the morning only, and if the temperature drops enough overnight. So far it hasn't been cold enough in the house for the heating to kick in.

Yes, we have the heating turned off completely for 4/5 months of the year usually. I only recently programmed it for the two hour setting in case it got chilly inside overnight, but it hasn't yet.

FetlocksBlowingInTheWind · 26/09/2022 12:27

Thanks for all the replies!

My hands are absolutely freezing despite my lovely Turtle Doves wrist warmers and lots of cups of coffee 😂
It's 15 degrees outside here so not a cold as some of you, I think my house is not well insulated, 1920's with some of the original single glaze windows still.

Get a fluffy poncho. When I'm sat working and it's cold I just stick it on over my clothes. It's still about 21C in this room though with no heating on.

VeridicalVagabond · 26/09/2022 11:25

Have had it on all last week, husband had COVID and was freezing so opted to put it on. Now I'm working from home this week and I refuse to sit in a cold house, so I've got it on again. Guess we're starting early this year, normally don't put it on until late October.

This is what I thought, that it's cold earlier this year...I'm sure last year I didn't need to put heating on till into October.

When I can't stand the cold anymore. It's never ever been on before October though.

I have mine set too low to come on at the moment but I would change the temperature settings to let the timer start kicking in.

I do have a blanket over me but I love the idea of a poncho!

Feet also freezing.
