What is this I’ve found on my daughters head? Is it a tick?

My daughter, 5, has had a temperature of 40 all night. Been in with me, sleeping in her knickers to keep her cool. Had some calpol.

This morning I’ve woken up to take her temperature and found what I think is a tick but I’m not sure?

I’ve pulled it out - and thrown it away - but it was alive when I pulled it out. Should I get my daughter checked over by a GP?

When my little brother got his it was a helluva job to remove, they tried freezing it, alcohol, but it was huge, and they were scared they would leave parts behind, hope your daughter gets sorted and feels better soon. x

Fluffmum · 28/09/2022 10:34

Definitely a tick

I assumed @Fluffmum was kidding based on the responses to RTFT 😂

Anamechangeisasgoodasarest · 28/09/2022 12:59

@TimeforZeroes

and I assumed she wasn't based on the alarming number of people who don't RTFT (and the lack of any sort of emoji)

@Fluffmum apologies if I had a sense of humour fail!

vickylou78 · 28/09/2022 12:59

Yes I read the thread but the doctors hadn't prescribed any antibiotics up to that point, they were quite rightly focusing on the walking issues etc. Just that in my experience doctors do not know much about Lyme Disease and you have to keep pestering them.

Ifrozethehoumous · 28/09/2022 14:03

Looks like your dear little girl is okay now. I’m so relieved for you. I have grandkids about that age and recently became aware of issues with ticks. You did really well. You must be absolutely bushed now. Sending a hug.

ScotsBluebell · 28/09/2022 14:55

So glad your little girl is OK. But anyone who thinks that ticks aren't a problem in Scotland hasn't done their homework. They are particularly prolific where there are large deer populations, (and large seasonal influxes of tourists) so islands like Arran and Skye in particular are hotspots, but you'll find plenty of them elsewhere too. Or, to be more accurate, they'll find you. Doctor friend says kids are particularly vulnerable and while one or two, quickly removed, probably won't be a problem, a child running through heather and bracken in shorts might emerge with dozens of them, and will probably be prescribed antibiotics. Chemists sell good tick removers.

cannockcandy · 28/09/2022 18:01

Glad your little is OK but please keep her off school until she is at full health again. It's not good for her to feel like she has to go when she is ill. Trust me, I was her as a child and resented my mum for not caring enough about my health. Not saying you're that way, but it is how a child will perceive it and then be disinclined to talk to you the next time they feel unwell. Xxx

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/09/2022 20:09

so glad to hear you were treated well at the Alex

lindsatron · 29/09/2022 08:28

It is imperative that she has antibiotics asap, demand it if you have too! Lyme disease is life changing! Good luck

CottonSock · 29/09/2022 15:36

Surprised they didn't offer blood test or antibiotics for lymes

stayathomegardener · 29/09/2022 16:51

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/09/2022 09:32

This is the clinic that you can send a tick to, if you are concerned. If I had a tick that had fed for 24hrs I would get it tested - many GPs don't know enough about Lyme and this is a good way to know.

biobest.co.uk/lyme-disease-testing-by-pcr/

That's a good resource, thanks.

Yes looks like a tick take her to GP high temp could indicate Lymes disease/reaction or infection. My niece had it a couple of year’s ago, it is apparently becoming more common.

@Emberino

This thread has over 300 posts (and is a week old)

Did you not have the slightest interest in reading what may have happened in 7 days?

Emberino · 10/10/2022 14:06

Really do you have nothing better to do…..only came up on my email on the 4th. And guess what trying to be helpful I typed a reply quickly without checking the date. But clearly not the dedicated mumsnetter you are….I consider myself duly chastised and am hanging my head in shame

Workinghardeveryday · 10/10/2022 22:00

@Emberino take no notice.

You were being kind, no idea why people can be mean for the sake of it!!

Hello!

I’ve just made an account whilst I wait for the doctor to call me back but wondered if anyone can offer me any peace of mind.

My 4 year old son had a fever 2 weeks ago, lasting around 3/4 days and it was controllable with calpol etc just persistent. No other symptoms at the time which I thought was strange, but then once the fever stopped he developed a couple of blotches for a few days on his skin. We took him to the out of hours as we suspected scarlet fever (the rash was barely noticeable once we got there) and they checked his obs, no fever present and said it was viral.

That was all roughly 10 days ago and his been fine since, but last night I went in to check on him at bedtime and he was peeling skin pretty badly on his fingers, literally pulling it off in chunks. I checked his feet which have very minor peeling and did a quick google which naturally came up with Kawasaki and has freaked me out.

I’ve read every page on the internet and every mumsnet thread so far on it and can’t seem to find anything conclusive as he didn’t have the 5 day uncontrolled temp as has been fine in between but the shedding is weird. His lips were a little dry and cracked this morning so I’ve called the doctors and I’m back to freaking out again.

I just wondered whether anyone can shed any light? If it was Kawasaki would it have been more noticeable over the last week or so? We’ve had half term and he’s been his usual self, no fever or symptoms but I know that doesn’t mean it can’t be it it, or does it?

Thanks!

Hi, it does sound like still could have been scarlet fever with the peeling skin. Would need antibiotics.. From unfortunate experience, watch out for sudden onset in behaviour/mental health as PANDAS is on the increase. When PANDAS kids are in a flare (from strep/scarlet fever etc) peeling skin is very common :-(

vickylou78 · 07/06/2023 15:03

Could also be 'Hand, foot and mouth' which is very contagious and nothing to worry about. Best ask your GP

coffeebabes · 05/09/2023 17:24

Did you get prescribed antibiotics for the tick bite? My son had one in his leg, took him walk in and it was removed but they refused to prescribe antibiotics for him.

Get a tick remover, easy to remove yourself next time. You only need antibiotics if you get symptoms. I get bitten two or three times every year, I would be on antibiotics all Summer! Just keep an eye out for flu like symptoms and/or a rash.
