What is this I’ve found on my daughters head? Is it a tick?

My daughter, 5, has had a temperature of 40 all night. Been in with me, sleeping in her knickers to keep her cool. Had some calpol.

This morning I’ve woken up to take her temperature and found what I think is a tick but I’m not sure?

I’ve pulled it out - and thrown it away - but it was alive when I pulled it out. Should I get my daughter checked over by a GP?

irritable hip or osteomyelitis after a fever is a possibility.

definitely ask for those. especially osteomyelitis doesn't always show clearly on a scan. and dr often don't think about it.

when one dc had osteomyelitis the dr said it's often seen after a systemic illness (i.e. fever)

we were also asked if dc had close contact to cattle or drank raw milk as tb can present as osteomyelitis as well.

all the best.

She’s being admitted for further monitoring, I think they’re more concerned about her hip. They mentioned if her hip hurts again in the morning then an MRI.
I’ve just gotten here and swapped with my husband so I’ll stay the night with her. Thanks again everyone

Hope she is ok OP. Apparently the South Downs is a big high risk area for Lyme Disease. If they haven't already I would be insisting that they get her on antibiotics, by drip if necessary. It's usually Doxycycline for adults and children older than 8, or amoxicillin or cefuroxime for adults, younger children, and pregnant or breast-feeding women. Lyme disease can have all sorts of very serious complications which last for years so they don't normally wait for a diagnosis, they usually treat it prophylactically with antibiotics as you need them at least within 72 hours of the bite. The bulls eye rash may or may not appear but it can take up to 3 months after the bite to show! The fact she has joint issues suddenly after the bite could be a sign of Lymes as the bacteria causes inflammation in the body and classically can affect the joints but also the heart and brain. Should quantify this with I'm not a doctor but I do have a bioscience degree so I've read up a lot of medical journals on it due to having a tick bite whilst pregnant! Just finished my long course of antibiotics. Hope she makes a speedy recovery, sure you are all exhausted X

OP

hope all is going well.

My DS had symptoms like this when he was 5. Turns out it was Kawasaki disease.
The gait was due to swelling/arthritic type pain around the joints.

CantFindTheBeat · 27/09/2022 07:46

Sorry, meant to say, Kawasaki disease is very treatable when diagnosed early.

Christinatherabbit · 27/09/2022 08:28

Hope she's okay this morning! What a worry 😟

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/09/2022 08:40

My DS had a tick in his hair, it was there for about a week, we think, before we noticed it.

From the picture it will have been in her hair for several days. When they attach, they are small. They then swell with all the blood. When they're hidden by hair they're easy to miss.

I hope your DD recovers quickly.

GingerKittenTail · 27/09/2022 08:44

A 6 week course of antibiotics will be needed to prevent Lyme disease

Thinking about your daughter OP. Don't kick yourself about not rushing her off to the hospital straight away. I didn't know how dangerous tick bites could be either until I read this thread.
