What is this I’ve found on my daughters head? Is it a tick?

My daughter, 5, has had a temperature of 40 all night. Been in with me, sleeping in her knickers to keep her cool. Had some calpol.

This morning I’ve woken up to take her temperature and found what I think is a tick but I’m not sure?

I’ve pulled it out - and thrown it away - but it was alive when I pulled it out. Should I get my daughter checked over by a GP?

Please don't wait. She needs a full course of antibiotics asap even without a bullseye rash.

My son has had lyme disease and it's a nightmare if it's not treated immediately.

Garman · 27/09/2022 20:39

Dear God people, RTFT.

Overnightoats1 · 27/09/2022 20:42

Looks like a tick to me - is definitely get her to a gp

I would echo what others have said that you should chase up antibiotics for the tick bite as Lyme disease is nasty and can be permanent side effects if not caught quickly. Just worth keep raising it.

What percentage of people actually read the thread?! Frustrating.

@Aurea and @Overnightoats1 and @vickylou78 if you click on "see all" in the OP's first post you will see that she has updated this thread several times.

If you find in the near future that your little one develops rapid onset of anxiety, OCD or similar neuro/psych issues that weren't there before, PLEASE seek treatment from a PANS/PANDAS specialist. Dont let the NHS fob you off with non existent camhs. My son has PANDAS which is caused by strep and its horrific. Lyme can cause PANS. Both cause inflammation of the basal ganglia in the brain (which doesn't show in an MRI), and it causes neuro and physical issues :-(

LuckyLil · 27/09/2022 21:50

Fortunately the limping wasn't because of the bite but just be careful as you're in a Tick area that when you do remove them you get the mouth part out as well because it can break off and cause infection of you can't find it. You mentioned you found a barb afterwards and tweezers isn't usually advised because they don't always remove all of the Tick, have a look online as there's a special tool to put over it and you need to twist a certain way to get all of the mouth parts out.

This! It must be so annoying for the OP.

The thread about the electrician with his blanket and the pillow was the same!

Reigateforever · 27/09/2022 22:21

Please have it confirmed it wasn’t Lyme disease or have it treated, as a girl I worked with suffered badly, 18 months after not realizing she had been infected. It was very painful for her to walk.

TooHotToRamble · 27/09/2022 22:33

Please push for antibiotics. That tick was on there a long time and there’s redness around it. Lyme disease is vey nasty and often lifelong if not caught early. If it were my child I’d want the antibiotics.

RunningTiger · 27/09/2022 22:38

Gosh I am so sorry what a lot you and DP and daughter have been though.
Please make sure you get the full course of antibiotics prescribed for the tick bite. My son got bitten by a tiny tick, I thought nothing of it. Then a week later he had a temp and a rash. We still weren’t convinced was Lymes though TBF and nor was doctor but we got the antibiotics as a precaution as obviously had symptoms. He was 4 and needed 3 weeks worth which I really thought was far too long to take them but that is the course for Lymes at that age.

hope all recovered asap xx

Mamanyt · 27/09/2022 23:16

Yes, it is a tick. Are you certain that the head came out with it? They often do not, and cause problems. I'd have her checked, just to be certain!!!

Gillypip · 27/09/2022 23:18

Please please ask for a blood sample to be sent to Germany. They appear to be the leading testers for specialists in diagnosing chronic Lyme disease.

Trixiefirecracker · 27/09/2022 23:20

There’s a huge amount of hysteria about tick bites on here. There are many different kinds of ticks and most don’t carry Lyme disease. It’s quite a rare disease.

Shazziep · 27/09/2022 23:20

It looks like a piercing to me.

This is one of the most frustrating threads ever for people not reading even OP's posts only!

So, here's how, in case people don't want to read whole threads but want to contribute posts that are useful based on the latest updates from an OP. In this case that's just over 10 short posts from OP, so a minute or two or your time.

Simply click on 'see all' on any of OP's on desktop, or use the icon that looks like a funnel on the top right of the thread in the app and select OP's name - you can do so whether you're a premium user or not.

Voila!

Glad she is out of hospital and okay!

The Alex is our children's hospital too. We have had to use it a few times and they're second to none in my opinion. So thorough and so amazing with the children!

Hope she feels better asap x

ThereIbledit · 28/09/2022 00:20

Wow, so many not RTFTers! OP, hope kiddo is continuing to improve. x

Alwayswaiting · 28/09/2022 07:26

Thanks to everyone that’s suggested the GP and watching for Lymes. She’s exhausted today and still asleep, I’m half minded to keep her off so she can rest a bit more.

Thanks @Purplefoxes and everyone who has suggested keeping an eye for the next three months, I’ll also book in a GP appointment just for reassurance around lymes.

The Alex were amazing - lucky to have them as our local childrens hospital.

many thanks again everyone - have really appreciated all the help, support and advice

It's good you're taking the potential of Lyme disease seriously despite the other diagnosis. There could of course be two issues at play and exposure to infected ticks can aggravate existing health issues.

My son went on a scout camp four years ago and 8 boys out of 15 (as well as three leaders) caught confirmed LD. They had been sitting eating on grass and rolling down grassy slopes wearing shorts and T shirts.

There are indeed Lyme hot spots around. The incidence of infected ticks is 18% where I live in Scotland.

bemusedmoose · 28/09/2022 08:19

Yes it's a tick - they can still crawl around without their head so be really sure you got it all out.

I would definitely get her checked - high temp and a tick bite could be lymes disease. I have friends who have it and nhs routinely refuse to acknowledge it but it can be serious if not treated with antibiotics at the beginning. So please research it and if you think it's possible fight to get the treatment!

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/09/2022 09:32

This is the clinic that you can send a tick to, if you are concerned. If I had a tick that had fed for 24hrs I would get it tested - many GPs don't know enough about Lyme and this is a good way to know.

Seven pages in and people are still responding to just the first post....

Really pleased to hear your dd is on the mend OP.

My dd and dh are often out doing outdoor stuff with Explorers and I am the tick checker when they come home.
