What is this I’ve found on my daughters head? Is it a tick?

My daughter, 5, has had a temperature of 40 all night. Been in with me, sleeping in her knickers to keep her cool. Had some calpol.

This morning I’ve woken up to take her temperature and found what I think is a tick but I’m not sure?

I’ve pulled it out - and thrown it away - but it was alive when I pulled it out. Should I get my daughter checked over by a GP?

Hope your daughter was ok over night and they can diagnose and start treatment today. Thinking of you.

CalmdownCampers · 27/09/2022 12:06

Hope there is some improvement with your little girl x

Thinking of you @Alwayswaiting. Hospitals aren't a nice place to be without a sick child. I'm sure they'll get to the bottom of this and you absolutely did the correct thing by going to A&e.

Trudij123 · 27/09/2022 13:14

Hope your little one is doing ok today @Alwayswaiting

Hi everyone - she has had a really good rest overnight in hospital - regular obs but she slept and slept.
The orthopaedic consultant came to see her this morning - she’s still limping with reduced range of motion, and it’s been attributed to transient synovitis. So they think has been caused by the tonsillitis that she has and it’s quite common upto the age of 7 according to the consultant.
I asked about the tick bite and they’ve said it was right to bring her in but the temp and limping is due to the transient synovitis.
we are now waiting to be discharged, temp has reduced to normal and things are on the up for her now.
thanks to everyone for all the support and advice, I really have appreciated it. Xx

That’s great. I would make sure she’s had the right antibiotics to cover for Lyme disease as there was redness around the tick bite, if not ask about prophylactic antibiotics and if not ask her Gp on discharge.

Navigatingnewwaters · 27/09/2022 13:33

Have they prescribed antibiotics for the tick bite?

MelodyPondsMum · 27/09/2022 13:41

DS had transient synovitis around the same age. The limp remained about a week after his temp, etc, had cleared but then it disappeared too.
Hope she feels better for having slept and that her symptoms clear up soon.

Theonlyoneiknow · 27/09/2022 13:45

Agree with others, give the size of that tick it had been there a while and had a good feed so I would definitely want some prophylactic antibiotics - hopefully they will give them to you without too much fuss.

totallyoutnumbered · 27/09/2022 13:58

So relieved for you both x

misspositivepants · 27/09/2022 14:02

I thought it might be something like that, my nephew had similar after tonsillitis. I also had post streptococcus reactive arthritis after tonsillitis. It can be a really nasty bug! Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 27/09/2022 14:12

That’s good news, you must be very relieved.
I think the tick probably was about 24 hours embedded — they take up a lot of blood initially and then slow down.
Rose Geranium oil is a good tick repellent.

venusandmars · 27/09/2022 14:17

Glad to hear your dd is getting treatment.

My dh had Lyme disease. It typically appears some time after the tick bite (in his case about 10 days) not immediately.

Xiaoxiong · 27/09/2022 14:20

That's good news but I would still be hoping for a course of antibiotics for that tick bite, did they say anything about that? Especially as you don't know if you got the whole head/mouthparts.

Zeeza · 27/09/2022 14:24

What a scary thing to have happened. It sounds like the doctors took you seriously and looked after your little one well. I hope she is right as rain in a couple of days.

Thank you for updating us. We were thinking of you lots. Xxx

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 27/09/2022 14:48

What a worry for you! Glad to hear its worked out

Indeed. They don't seem to commonly give them in the UK though. Would be given in this situation in most other countries.

I'm so glad I wasn't in the UK when I caught Lyme Disease from a tick, and was given antibiotics the moment I went to a doctor, which got rid of it properly.

TheClogLady · 27/09/2022 14:49

Phew!

hope you get home soon and are able to have a restful evening.

BluePinkRed · 27/09/2022 15:55

So glad you got answers and DD is on the mend OP - and you were definitely right to go in!!

But cannot believe so many people would want antibiotics for a tick bite showing NO signs of lyme?? Where I live (rural central Scotland) they are so common we would all be on antibiotics all year if we asked for a course after a tick accidentally got missed for 24hrs!

lingle · 27/09/2022 16:02

Yeah. We like little girls being ok round here Flowers

BaggiesBride · 27/09/2022 16:15

So pleased for your little girl. What a relief. You've both been on my mind since last night. Home soon for a warm bath, pj's on and a restful evening I hope 💐💐

She has had symptoms though... She had a temperature, painful leg (aching joints or muscles are a symptom) and her mum says she isn't right in herself which usually means listless / very tired. These are all early symptoms.
