Why do poor/middle-class people vote for the Conservatives?

moneymoneymoneymakestheworldgoround · 24/09/2022 18:26

When the Conservatives protect privileged interests, why would anyone not particularly rich vote for them?
The conservatives are now uncapping bankers' bonuses ffs

'aspirational toryism'

One of the most ridiculous things going, but one of Thatcher's most enduring legacies.

LaPerduta · 24/09/2022 18:29

Guess it's if they share right-wing values that aren't to do with wealth/finance. Agree policies such as uncapping bonuses are ridiculous.

MolliciousIntent · 24/09/2022 18:29

Two reasons:

  1. The standard reason for people voting against their own interests - they're not very bright and believe whatever they're told with no critical thought.
  2. They're deeply disillusioned with the party they're "supposed" to vote for, because they've never seen any improvement in their situation under that government, and they've lost patience.

I've never voted Cons and I'm poor.

Movinghouseatlast · 24/09/2022 18:30

Aspiration. I absolutely don't understand it, it's obvious they don't give a fuck about the poor.

My mum and dad were avid Tories but they both came from poverty and ended up there.

Luckydip1 · 24/09/2022 18:30

Because they want their children to be rewarded if they have the drive, ambition and brains to do well, and not to be heavily taxed.

iloveeverykindofcat · 24/09/2022 18:30

The economic equivalent of colonisation of the mind.

Luckydip1 · 24/09/2022 18:32

Uncapping the bankers bonus has been done to protect the City by allowing the best pay to attract the best talent in the world. We would all be much poorer if the City fell into decline.

bakewellbride · 24/09/2022 18:33

Fuck knows op.

Cosycover · 24/09/2022 18:33

In the west of Scotland its mostly to do with the football team they support

I vote Conservative because I know my place and like to doff my cap to my superiors.

AFP10 · 24/09/2022 18:35

Aspiration and naivety. My Grandparents were from East End of London, war children, Grandfather worked on the print and they always voted Labour (quite aggressively when we were younger). Then they moved to a area out of London, full of snobs and started voting Tory denying they were ever Labour. I mean this is a bloke who was frontline in the poll tax riots! Bizarre!
I've asked some people/friend why, when there is no benefit in Policies, and the standard response is usually "now you mention it I don't know. My parents did so I do". 🙄

@Luckydip1 Do you have any idea which party has increased taxes over the last 12 years so they are at their highest level in most peoples lifetime?

Bettyboo12 · 24/09/2022 18:36

I know alot of people who liked Boris and although completely useless, they liked his humour and witty ways compared to other dull leaders.

GyozaGuiting · 24/09/2022 18:37

It’s like Americans who vote trump for the ‘American dream’; work hard and you can achieve anything. socialism will never benefit me, type of vibe.

A lot of working class people I know (I know a fair few trades) with full time jobs think benefits people are all scroungers and they want to keep more tax, is another reason.

Janie94 · 24/09/2022 18:37

I vote conservative and I am probably very much in the middle, not poor and not rich.

Surely it's obvious that a large range of different people vote for them because they always win the votes..?

I guess if it makes you feel better by saying people aren't bright if they vote Tory, then keep saying it to yourself, I'm sure there's better things to do on a Saturday afternoon though!

ivykaty44 · 24/09/2022 18:37

MSM propogander, fear of socialism and higher tax is what is feed to them as bad things that will happen if Labour get in

tbh if labour had got in 2010 we wouldn’t have had Cameron take us to the poll over Brexit- but there you go

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/09/2022 18:37

Because Labour, (not sure if just from what I notice is London), seemed in recent years to champion migrants and I guess the daily mail “benefit scrounger” type. Tories seemed to project the idea that you can better yourself and you will be rewarded narrative.

SellFridges · 24/09/2022 18:38

Because they are small c conservative, often quite sheltered or narrow minded and don’t like the idea of their money helping other people. “Look after yourself first”

Sickoffamilydrama · 24/09/2022 18:38

From what collegues (in a red wall area) have said:
1)They are happy with how they handled furlough and generally covid.
2) They have completely lost trust with labour and don't believe it represents them anymore.
3) They think labour is obsessed with punishing the wealthy/Businesses and that it could affect their company and thus Jeopardize their job security.
4) They think the infighting and other behaviours from Labour mean they wouldn't be able to run a government.
5) They get pissed off comments around anyone who voted for Tory is thick/scum whatever abusive word you want to put in and it pushes them towards rather than away from Tories.

MintJulia · 24/09/2022 18:39

I'm old enough to remember the last real leftwing government in the U.K. and all the misery that entailed.

I'm very cautious about allowing Momentum anywhere near power - and that is what will happen. But the Tories are pushing even my limits.

jgw1 · 24/09/2022 18:40

Here are three reasons that I will vote Conservative at the next election.

But Jeremy Corbyn.
Keir had a beer.
Boris knows what a woman is.

DappledOliveGroves · 24/09/2022 18:40

We're comfortable but not rich by any stretch of the imagination.

I vote Conservative for the following reasons:

  • They can identify an adult human female and don't think men have a cervix; and
  • They fundamentally stand for an ethos of taking responsibility for yourself and your decisions and not relying on the state to get you places. I'm inspired by my father who was born pre-WW2, in absolute poverty in the slums of London, whose mother died when he was eight and whose father walked out on the family (my father and his younger siblings), who then joined the Navy, educated himself and made a career, bought a house and ensured his wife and child were provided for and gave me an education at an independent school. He did that entirely of his own volition and had no help from the state. He voted Tory his whole life and it's that type of mindset and ethos that I feel the Conservatives represent.

I have an Oxbridge degree and various post-grad qualifications. I'd like to think I'm intelligent and don't think that hurling insults at those you disagree with is a particularly effective way of getting them to share your opinion.

Of course there are Tory policies that I don't agree with. I'm very dubious about the new tax cuts and trickle down economics but overall I feel that their political outlook most aligns with what I believe.

DillDanding · 24/09/2022 18:41

I work in construction. If conversations turn to politics on building sites, I have yet to meet a builder/skilled tradesman who’d vote labour. I can’t explain this but I know the Tories scrapping the proposed corporation tax rise will be very welcome to them.

LadyAethelfled · 24/09/2022 18:41

Many of my older relatives did vote for them because of one single issue - immigration/Brexit. Purely that reason as they told me, and despite previously voting labour their whole life.
Unfortunately many people do not fully understand politics, economics, global issues and get fixated on one issue like Brexit because of social media/conversations down the pub.
Without realising how the Tory policies can affect them personally. These same people are now the ones moaning about the NHS and other public services. I could say I told you so...
