Why do poor/middle-class people vote for the Conservatives?

moneymoneymoneymakestheworldgoround · 24/09/2022 18:26

When the Conservatives protect privileged interests, why would anyone not particularly rich vote for them?
The conservatives are now uncapping bankers' bonuses ffs

I voted Tory years ago when I was 21. Politically illiterate. It’s a dirty secret of mine 😂.
Clearly I would never repeat that.

Until there is a realistic alternative then people will continue to vote Conservatives. Labour is the non-working class, not for the working class they seem to think they represent. I would then rather see benefit to those that work hard than those who never work.
I think Liz Truss is a disaster and we needed Rishi in place - unfortunately this obviously hasn't happened.
Liz truss could be the end of Conservatives if Labour actually came out with something voting for (and it needs to be good to stop people putting Labour=Corbin together)

I know I did this on another thread, but I think I shall just post this here.

I voted for Boris at the last election because he understands the concerns that I have mostly that this country has been overrun by foreigners ho come over here sponging of benefits and taking our jobs.

I think this exactly why many people vote Tory.

Latent and not so latent xenophobia.

I've never voted Tory. I've worked hard, done well and been rewarded. Wish I had a govt in power though who would tax me more to make life better for everyone. As I'm not a complete dick.

Perhaps because the Tories, unlike Labour, LibDems and the Greens, actually seem to give a shit about women's rights. People hate 'woke' bullying and BS.

Do I need to write a list of all the ways that the Tories have over the last 12 years removed all of our rights, whether we be a man or a woman?

notdaddycool · 24/09/2022 19:32

They have been three massive shocks to the economy in about 5 years, spread 20 years apart they’d be fine, you could call Brexit self inflicted, but it was the first not the third. It’s not a surprise things are ropey now. There are loons on the right of the Tory party and on the left of Labour, I value the Tories on defence, on understanding what a woman is and usually on the economy. I do feel less likely to vote Tory next time than usual and wouldn’t be gutted if they lost, but I’ll probably vote for them if I vote.

itsgettingweird · 24/09/2022 19:33

Luckydip1 · 24/09/2022 18:30

Because they want their children to be rewarded if they have the drive, ambition and brains to do well, and not to be heavily taxed.

That's a really interesting viewpoint I'd never considered.

I wonder if the younger generation think like this too?

My ds is doing computer science and will be a software developer (he already has a PT job in this field). He hates the Tory's. He'll earn big bucks.

Amboseli · 24/09/2022 19:33

In that case we should join single market and sort out passporting of financial services. Even with uncapped bonuses who will want to come here when we're on a downward death spiral.

jgw1 · 24/09/2022 19:36

What I really like about the Conservatives is that they always provide someone to hate. Over the past few Conservative governments we have had the opportunity to hate the EU and foreigners, But Jeremy Corbyn and now the poor.
It always makes me feel better to have someone to hate.

Florenz · 24/09/2022 19:37

I've vote Tory in the past because Labour have lost the plot at times. There's a VERY nasty underbelly on the left that makes itself known from time to time, Labour need to be far quicker to get rid of MPs and associates who disgrace themselves. Diane Abbott should have been gone decades ago, she's Manna from heaven for the Tories, Emily Thornberry should have been gone minutes after her infamous white van man tweet which alienated a whole swathe of British self-employed.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2022 19:38

@ivykaty44, yes, and if the Labour hard left hadn’t meant they chose Ed Miliband (who any fool could tell wasn’t PM material) instead of David, we wouldn’t have had Cameron, and probably not Brexit, either.

The Labour hard left have a lot to answer for.
But I just wish there was a David Miliband equivalent at the top of Labour now. Keir is worthy enough, but he doesn’t have the guts to say what a woman is, and I don’t have confidence that he’ll be strong enough to wipe the Tories out next time.

orbitalcrisis · 24/09/2022 19:38

Their newspaper told them to.

I saw someone being interviewed who was adamant that he was right wing but every policy he was for were left wing policies, but he kept repeating, 'I'm not left wing, I'm right wing'. They've been duped.

I think people could see what a hypocrite Starmer was when he was caught drinking beer at his own little party.

The law set that one straight.

And we now know Johnson made an agreement was only investigated for his birthday bash and he was fined.

Starmer said he'd resign if found guilty - he wasn't.

clowerina · 24/09/2022 19:39

not saying it's every reason, but because tories sow lies and hatred and people believe other things are the cause of the issues that the tories actually cause. It's easier to blame a scapegoat.

also I think the media they consume (sun, mail etc) whips up bullshit and they believe it unthinkingly

obv not everyone, but a lot of people!

FairlySane · 24/09/2022 19:39

Aspirational Toryism in 30, 40, 50 age group.
Forelock tugging deference in 60, 70, 80 age group.

Round here it's because the conservative MP is very active in the community and smiley and friendly. It honestly is that simple.

So is mine.

But it's Braverman so it doesn't persuade me to vote for her!

@jgw1 I hope you don’t have kids. You appear to be, at best, horrifically stupid, at worst, an easily led sheep that is unable to do anything but consume talking points peddled to you by those who want to exploit you. Exactly the kind of person who shouldn’t be in charge of raising a child.

Okaaaay · 24/09/2022 19:42

Naivety and brainwashing by the Daily Mail and others whose reporting is so right wing it is frightening. Racist, sexist and in line with traditional views from many low income areas. Genuinely. It is utterly fucked up the shit that people will spout from there as if it’s The Truth.

Remainiac · 24/09/2022 19:42

I work in NHS (non clinical) and I’m always astonished at how many colleagues vote Tory and “love Boris”. Turns out turkeys happily vote for Xmas.

Its ok @Tinytinseltown I don't have any kids or adult goats either. The neighbours have sheep who sometimes wander into our garden though.

@Tinytinseltown I think@jgw1 was being ironic! Smiley icon needed!!

I don't actually understand why bankers' bonuses should be capped. It doesn't make sense to me. Why just bankers? Punishment for 2008? Because they're all wankers?

I vote Tory for lower taxes and pro business policies. I'm comfortable middle class. Privately educated, postgrad, decent career but now crippled by childcare costs in central London.

I truly hoped for a significant increase to the 40% threshold and more change on stamp duty. That would help the middle class. Abolishing the 45% bracket? No. Not the right priority.

@roarfeckingroarr We currently have the highest taxes in most of our lifetimes. Do you know which party has been in power for the past 12 years raising taxes?

Florenz · 24/09/2022 19:50

The Banks shouldn't have been bailed out in 2008. They should have been allowed to fail and the people involved jailed, not given free money. Bailing them out was Brown's major mistake, not forgetting his famous stating that he had put an end to boom and bust.
