@OwlsDance

Has anyone thought why on earth Putin announced mobilisation without locking the borders?

Do you know I had thought about this. I should know better than to think it was a temporary oversight 'remedied' by the deployment of conscription centres at the borders. He was allowing any potential opponents to leave!

Igotjelly · 30/09/2022 08:13

Civilian convoy of cars fleeing has been shelled in Zaporizhzhia. 23 dead and 28 injured. Hearing that’s really effected me this morning, it’s just pure cruelty for cruelty’s sake.

I thought the same to be honest. That it was extremely bad planning. But Putin knows now that he can't win the war now. Mobilisation is just a distraction.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 30/09/2022 08:16

Oh that's awful @Igotjelly they also did this is Kherson. Horrific.

Igotjelly · 30/09/2022 08:19

I do think that nuclear use remains unlikely but suspect that more acts of sheer brutality against the civilian population are almost certain. In a way it’s no better than a nuclear strike except that is on the west can sleep safe in our beds. 😭

Ijsbear · 30/09/2022 08:22

I'm also concerned that all the fleeing Russians will be bringing a bloody awful attitude with them and will overwhelm Georgia etc.

ISW Key Takeaways

The Kremlin continues to violate its stated “partial mobilization” procedures and contradict its own messaging even while recognizing the systematic failures within the Russian bureaucracy just eight days after the declaration of mobilization.

Belarus may be preparing to accommodate newly-mobilized Russian servicemen but remains unlikely to enter the war in Ukraine on Russia’s behalf.

Ukrainian troops have likely nearly completed the encirclement of the Russian grouping in Lyman and cut critical ground lines of communication (GLOCS) that support Russian troops in the Drobysheve-Lyman area.

Ukrainian military officials maintained operational silence regarding Ukrainian ground maneuvers in Kherson Oblast but stated that Russian forces are deploying newly-mobilized troops to reinforce the Kherson Oblast frontline.

Ukrainian troops continued to target Russian logistics, transportation, and military assets in Kherson Oblast.

Russian troops continued ground attacks in Donetsk Oblast.

Russian forces have likely increased the use of Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones in southern Ukraine.

An independent Russian polling organization, the Levada Center, found that almost half of polled Russians are anxious about mobilization, but that support for Russian military actions declined only slightly to 44%.

Ukrainian officials reiterated their concerns that the Kremlin will mobilize Ukrainian citizens in occupied oblasts following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s annexation announcement.

The share of those who approve of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s performance dropped from 83% in August to 77% in September, according to a survey conducted by polling agency Levada Center on Sept. 22-28. [still extremely high, though ofc there are questions as to 1) do people dare to put what they really think and 2) are the results accurately reported anyway?)

I do have to remind myself that every Russian I’ve ever met, and I’ve been to Russia a couple of times, has been warm friendly and intelligent. Most of these people fleeing are just normal people like you and I, some will have a bad attitude but lots of others just want a better life.

Same here. There's several Russians in my Finnish course and I remind myself that any Russian trying to learn Finnish is most likely Western-leaning.

Fladdermus · 30/09/2022 09:00

DH has a Russian colleague with 3 very young children. She's said she won't be applying for citizenship for them as she does not want her kids to be Russian, she doesn't want them to have to carry that shame for the rest of their lives.

notimagain · 30/09/2022 09:10

The issue isn't whether there are decent Russians or not, there are (based on having been to Russia myself, briefly, etc)

The issue is whether it is sensible or safe in the current circumstance to allow a widespread exodus of Russian nationals to elsewhere in the world, especially Europe.

IMHO that's a no.

unconfirmed rumours that Lyman has been retaken.

It seems too soon really. Wonderful if true though.

It's plausible.

The city was surrounded. The only supply road cut off.

With a bunch of troops with low moral they possibly just all surrendered.

I'd be surprised if any of the Chechens were still hanging around. They'll have long cleared off.

To summarize, several Russian telegram channels are warning that the battle in Lyman is at a critical point and that Ukraine is advancing from the north and southeast. Possible that the pocket collapses tonight or tomorrow, which would overshadow the annexation announcement.

It also sounds unlikely that Russia will be able to conduct a withdrawal without heavy losses

Of course, Russia is already facing a manpower problem and a lack of reserves in the Donbas. If it loses the forces in the Lyman pocket, that could lead to further advances by Ukraine deeper into the Donbas.

Remember ahead of any Russian announcement that Russia does not hold the whole of any of the regions its trying to annex.

So when the shills accuse Ukraine of attacking Russian ground, remember what Russia currently holds and that its already under despite with the military.

Ukraine could not join the EU or NATO or many reasons but one of the most key (and this goes for other countries) is that they had disputed borders which both organisations demand resolution before membership applications can go forward.

Russia is doing the opposite with border disputes which have been formally rejected before annexation and will never be recognised.

Russia is trying to annex land which is STILL under Ukrainian control and has never fallen into Russian control. And thats actually a key part.

In the midst of today, look for the published Russian map of what they are claiming...

But yes, attacks on 'Russia' when Ukraine already holds that ground are supposedly going to be used for propaganda are worth keeping eyes peeled for.

I think this weekend is going to be a tense moment.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/09/2022 09:35

I am afraid I have limited sympathy for Russians who are trying to leave now. They aren’t leaving because they’re opposed to the war (they have had since February for that) but because they don’t want it to affect them. As long as it was some other poor bugger/the entire Ukrainian nation getting shot at they were fine with it.

Putin believes the population worship him and will do what he says. He thinks they are all nationalistic robots. Or out to kill him. (obviously in the name of Russia)

Why would a megalomaniac think about people trying to flee on mass?

A Russian telegram channel is saying Lyman has been encircled and that LNR, BARS reserve units, and elements from Russia's 20th Combined Arms Army are still in the city.

Highly plausible that Lyman has fallen or its highly imminent.

Any idea what for?

Igotjelly · 30/09/2022 09:49

I feel quite hopeless this weekend. Don't know if the shitty weather is affecting my mood. Actually had a wee cry this morning thinking about Ukrainian children suffering (and of course all the others across the World). It just feels so cruel.

I'm really worried about these annexations and escalation and then on top of that feel so embarrassed that I'm scared when people are already suffering for real.
