Must buys when on holiday in Scotland

We are going to Scotland for a week on Friday, and wondered what things we should buy when there to bring home. We are staying in Kyle across the water from Skye, so interested in things from that area in particular, but also from other areas we should look out for which we might be able to find in shops near us. Many thanks.

I like to buy things made by local artists/craftspeople when I'm on holiday. For e.g. Xmas gifts or for myself. Also like looking out for locally made gin, whisky, cheese etc.

longtompot · 21/09/2022 13:49

That's the sort of things we'll be on the lookout for. I'm after some locally spun yarn to use in a blanket project

Look out for home-made tablet, a sweet made of sugar a bit like crumbly fudge. I prefer it to fudge.

Tablet makes my teeth itch. I can say that my dad is Scottish! Just look out for local stuff when you're there.

THisbackwithavengeance · 21/09/2022 15:07

I came on to say a black pudding supper and a deep fried mars bar but probably not really what you're after.Grin

This. It's so good.

And haggis of course.

Butteries!

Preferably with poached eggs and bacon on, for breakfast :)

This, it's gorgeous!

Isle of Skye tea towel! Ours is still in use after 10 years. 😁

SoupDragon · 21/09/2022 15:17

I have no suggestions' I only clicked on the thread to see if my personal predictions that "tablet" would be suggested within the first 3 replies was correct 😂

Blueberrycreampie · 21/09/2022 15:23

Isle of Skye Candle Company, although you can have them posted but some lovely ones! https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwihjrrZiqb6AhW3SEEAHe9UDZ8QFnoECAMQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fskyecandles.co.uk%2F&usg=AOvVaw0tTrGG_nDW-wGKyicbLuo8

Skye is glorious. Do a distillery tour (talisker springs to mind), eat seafood, visit Eilean Donan . Bring home more whisky, a Harris tweed handbag or something similar,

Seconded (thirded? Fourthed?) for tablet but not before bed cos it is so sugary you may as well do coke. Wink

NumptiesIncorporated · 21/09/2022 15:29

A tartan hat with ginger hair attached.

(I really came on to say tablet, but plenty have got there before me)

Juolo · 21/09/2022 15:32

Do they sell mackies in England? If not buy several packets of their crisps, they're the best.

MrsMaudeLebowski · 21/09/2022 15:37

If you are travelling onto to Skye here are a few suggestions of shops to visit..
Shilasdair Natural Dye Company for wool
Skye Works Gallery for art, gifts and the tea and cake in the bakery downstairs
Skye Batiks , not what you might think of as typically Scottish, but has wonderful colourful homewares and clothing. And also a warm welcome with a free cup of coffee!

HirplesWithHaggis · 21/09/2022 15:39

You could drive to Glenelg, then take the wee ferry to Skye, have a wee tour around, and drive back over the bridge.

goosebuster · 21/09/2022 15:41

No tips for thing to buy but having done Skye recently I would definitely recommend doing the quiraing walk and a pizza from the wee shop at the harbour. I'd skip the fish and chip shop there though, it was pretty grim.

Womencanlift · 21/09/2022 15:46

Tablet of course 😀
Potato scones
Irn Bru in a glass bottle - tastes far better than it does out a plastic one or a can
Arran cheese

Obviously that’s all food. In the non food category then perhaps some local ceramics. Does your surname have any links to Scotland? If it does maybe something with your family tartan or coat of arms.

EspeciallyDivided · 21/09/2022 16:25

I like some of the Arran Aromatics toiletries and candles and often bring those back.

longtompot · 21/09/2022 20:10

These are wonderful ideas and suggestions, thank you all so much!

The Iru Bru in a glass bottle, if still tastes as it used to, we shall have to get for our ds to go in his stocking.

Thank you for the tablet at bedtime warning. I shall treat it like coffee, none after 4pm

We are actually staying in Glenelg @HirplesWithHaggis so are planning to take the ferry over and then drive the bridge back.

We do have our dog with us if that changes any food eating place suggestions

They do - but you can get other crisp flavours and chocolate in Scotland.

FixTheBeak · 21/09/2022 20:20

buckfast
square sausage
tattie scones

that’s about it!

Loveholidaystoomuch · 21/09/2022 20:21

Fill your boot with Irn Bru
