The Sopranos... how did I miss this?

I've recently 'discovered' The Sopranos and OMG how freaking brilliant is it? I've done almost 3 seasons in a just over a week. I really thought I wouldn't be able to follow it as my concentration is low, but yep... I can do it! And what surprised me even more is that it's subtly really funny in places.

As a lover of the Italian man, I'm really finding 'Tony' intriguing and somewhat attractive.

I find the whole mob subject so interesting. How it works, how it's run... obviously I'm sure it's pretty it's a close as possible to being like real life and it strikes me as long as you're loyal, you won't get killed!

Anyway - just wondered what others opinion was :-)

@Ohnonevermind

It was odd because she was fit and well after leaving hospital and obviously she passed so they had to kill her off quickly... I'm wondering if she may have tried to get Tony killed again...?

Oh my word. To be watching the Sopranos for the first time ever.

You lucky thing.

Icepinkeskimo · 20/09/2022 23:01

It's possibly the greatest series ever created in my humble opinion. As some have quite rightly suggested Nurse Jackie, another amazing series, can I throw another one into the mix and that’s Lilyhammer? starring Steven Van Zandt who plays Silvio. In one of the episodes there is a reference back to The Sopranos, and then the theme tune starts, a stroke of genius.
I don’t know how many times I’ve rewatched any of these series probably far to many, but each time I notice something I’ve missed before. For the long winter nights these are my go to binge watch’s even after all these years.

My favourite one liner has to be from Paulie

You’re not gonna believe this. The guy killed 16 Czechoslovakians. He was an interior decorator.

I remember dh getting really into this when it first came out, he loved it and I got him the box set on DVD (seems like it wasn’t that long ago but was definitely over 10 years who! Who even uses dvds anymore, we don’t actually own a player!), he’s now happily rewatching them on sky.
I watched the odd bit here and there but never got into it, all a bit heavy going for me!

netflixandnaps · 20/09/2022 23:09

It came out in 1999 and I guess at the time as a new mother I didn't have time
to watch much TV but I do recall it being advertised.

Have you seen the one where Paulie and Christopher get lost in the woods?

Best episode of any show, ever.

Oh god yes! I'd forgotten just how good that episode is. I am fighting for a break from the scandi dramas and a re watch.... DH says it's too soon but I think he'll come round to my way of thinking or else I might just get him whacked Grin

Wouldrathergoonholiday · 20/09/2022 23:53

@ladygindiva I remember using the phrase breaking my balls at work when watching the Sopranos!

Best TV ever! Or at least one of the best.

Come back and tell us what you think of the last episode when you get to it OP.

MintyGreenDreams · 20/09/2022 22:54

It's brilliant but the end is ridiculously frustrating

Oh I thought it was perfect.

mrsfollowill · 21/09/2022 00:09

Was the best thing ever you lucky bugger getting to watch it all new! I remember stalking on ebay to buy the box sets on DVD! loved it - came out back in the day when you could watch one episode a week and had to spend the entire week waiting for the next one to be released- I sort of miss those days- no 'replay' you missed it then tough!

Stressybetty · 21/09/2022 00:40

Watched it years ago but DH has just bought season 1 on blu ray. Love the intro music. We started watching Lillyhammer and wanted to love it but just got bored I think.

HRTQueen · 21/09/2022 01:53

Lucky you it absolutely fantastic (watch The Wire after imo just beats it)

Tony is attractive, soowm great characters Carmella is fantastic but I really disliked her (as time goes on you will get why)

I love the intervention episode too

you will cry later on 😭 it’s just brilliant

stillvicarinatutu · 21/09/2022 01:59

Why could I not get into it ?

Same with peaky blinders and same with breaking bad .

I loved stranger things , queens gambit , the good place , lucifer , the end of the fucking world , sex education, loads of great tv - bit just can't get into these few series everyone else raves about

netflixandnaps · 21/09/2022 02:26

@stillvicarinatutu

I'm not usually into series, but 'You' on Netflix and this, both just had me hooked!

After you've finished The Sopranos, watch The Many Saints of Newark - the prequel movie set in the 60s and 70s

grannyjacob · 21/09/2022 03:49

I’ve got the box-set, have watched it all several times, five or six, I can’t remember which. Imo, The Sopranos is the best tv show ever, and Jimmy G’s portrayal of Tony is sublime. Most films are 90-120 mins, so it’s relatively “easy” for an actor to shine. There are 86 episodes of The Sopranos and Tony appears in virtually everyone and his performance never once falters.

Like most fans, I love Pine Barrens but my favourite episodes are those where Melfi appears. Again, imo, it’s the best acting that LB has ever done. One episode in particular still gets to me big-time, even yet I find myself begging her to tell/not to tell Tony what has happened to her.
I also recommend Nurse Jackie, EF is not the only Sopranos actor to appear in it.
The podcasts are also really enjoyable, MI is wonderful, intelligent and very insightful. And his voice is surprisingly lovely. SS is a bit of a pain at times, he’s over-enthusiastic to say the least.
The Many Saints of Newark is nowhere up to the standard of the tv show. JG’s son irl plays young Tony and I honestly don’t think he would have got the part otherwise. There’s at least one thread about it on here, you’d get more opinions from that.

Oblomov22 · 21/09/2022 04:10

Fabulous. Surprised you've never heard of it.

Picoloangel · 21/09/2022 06:14

Pauline Walnuts nicking the coffee maker from the cafe was hilarious. As above, Dr Melfi’s dilemma is so raw.

CocaColaMocaMola · 21/09/2022 07:32

@Ohnonevermind on the podcast they said that Livia was going to testify against Tony about the airline tickets and basically throw him under the bus. Janice was supposed to only be a one season character but after Nancy died they made Janice a main character as a female antagonist to Tony

FluffingtonMuffington · 21/09/2022 07:37

The many saints of Newark was rubbish

Laiste · 21/09/2022 08:36

Gosh i keep wanting to say things and realising i can't because OP hasn't finished watching yet!

Carmella - patience of a saint.
Adriana - ....... can't say much obvs. Such a tragic figure though. I just wanted to scoop her up and take her away!

Fascinating about the Shakespeare ref.

Ohnonevermind · 21/09/2022 08:36

@CocaColaMocaMola

Thanks for that, I just loved Livia, she was an amazing actress, the little looks when she dropped Tony in it with his friends, his uncle.

Janice was great too, I wa
