Cost of a new kitchen

Vapeyvapevape · 20/09/2022 18:06

I'm getting quotes for a new kitchen ( 9ft x 13ft ) and have just received one from Howdens , it does include appliances which I'm sure if I shop round I can get cheaper but really wanted to save the hassle of doing all that myself .
Anyway they've quoted £11,224.00 , just the tap is £200 (I think they saw me coming) The last time I bought a new kitchen was 25 years ago so a bit out of touch re prices .
Has anyone tried Howdens but found another supplier that's cheaper ?

Does that include fitting OP?

spring149 · 20/09/2022 18:09

whereabouts are you roughly? I'm in Hertfordshire and have been quoted 12k for an ensuite bathroom, which I think
is expensive! That seems a good price., but I know quotes can be steep down south!

minidancer · 20/09/2022 18:12

To be honest that sounds pretty reasonable to me. Just had a kitchen smaller than that from magnet and without appliances it was more than that. We had quotes from Howdens, Wren and a couple of more expensive places. We move a lot so have had 4 kitchens in 6 years and they have gone up a lot recently (like everything else 🙄)

I'm not far from you, in Essex

That doesn't include fitting.

No it doesn't.

how much is the fitting?

FinallyHere · 20/09/2022 18:32

Find someone you trust to do the fitting and then choose a supplier they are happy to use. Good fit is the difference between a truly stunning kitchen and ... the rest.

Runnerduck34 · 20/09/2022 18:33

Our unit costs were similar. we are in Kent. Went to a supplier in Lincolnshire as they were cheaper than SE prices they did fit it but we had to remove old units, plaster etc before their arrival, also had a bit of building work done, and new flooring with underfloor heating so that was another 5 k ish from memory oh and we also bought a new oven so that added to it too!

Startuplife · 20/09/2022 18:35

I would shop around. I’ve seen a couple of videos on TikTok recently where people have almost halved their original quotes by taking them to a competitor and then onto the next one etc.
It’s a fair bit of hassle but could be worth a go.

Whiskers4 · 20/09/2022 18:41

Howdens are a good quality solid make. Might be worth getting quotes in from small firms for Howdens and another make.

I'm waiting to hear from the fitters.

Sounds reasonable to me, depends on what you’ve chosen for worktops etc but it’s not crazy at all.

Lentil63 · 20/09/2022 18:44

Sounds reasonable, I’ve just had a new kitchen but it is about twice the size of yours. It was £46K.

That's true, my last kitchen was from MFI but the fitters were excellent and it didn't budge for 18 years .

Do you know the split of cost of fitting and cost of units ?

OP posts:
Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 20/09/2022 18:49

Fitting was £3-3.5k for joiner, plumber & electrician

Gribbit987 · 20/09/2022 19:00

Didn’t the Howdens quote come via the fitter?

When looking at the quote try and see if you can streamline the cabinets - smaller sizes will be almost as much as the big sizes so for instance if you have 3 small 300 ones see if you can play with the design and get a 900 instead. The fewer cabinets the lower the price. It will also look less fragmented.

What discount does it say has been applied?
Do you trust the account holder? I have known builders to seriously inflate pricing via the Howdens system.

Also, promotions change each month and October and November are usually good for discounts so bear that in mind.

Personally I would look somewhere where the company will deal with you direct as a consumer and there is some transparency with pricing.

AesSedaint · 20/09/2022 19:01

Howden's have a sale in October, so if you time it right you might get some money off.

Also, because they only work with fitters, and each fitter gets a different trade discount (which they may or may not pass on to you), it might be worth checking with a different fitter.

NannyGythaOgg · 20/09/2022 19:12

If you have a copy of the plan - or have a good idea of the layout, try pricing it from DIY kitchens. They are based in Yorkshire but deliver all over the country. (My sister lives in Gloucester and halved her quoted price on going with them).

My fitter previously used Howdens and tried to persuade me but after fitting the DIY one said he would be recommending them in future.

My units and (laminate) worktop came to 3.5k (no white goods though) for a 12 x 10 foot kitchen.

Vapeyvapevape · 20/09/2022 19:17

The fitter did say he would pass his discount on to me but I don't know if Howdens have factored that in , they know who I'm using though.
I've had to chase them a few times to make amendments to their plan and then to send the quote , they have also added an integrated microwave which wasn't on the plan and I don't want and they've forgotten to add a kitchen sink , so I've lost a bit of faith in them.
I've got another 2 quotes to come back , so I'll have a compare .
It's such a big expense and I want to make sure I'm not being completely ripped off (single mum and all that) and it's fitted properly.

That sounds pretty good. We recently had an initial quote of £40k + that we've got down to about £21k without appliances.

Noix · 20/09/2022 19:23

We had ours (small/medium, no island, including appliances) by Wren for 12k, including dry fit. (However needed replaster/rewire etc. so came in closer to 18k) Finished last week. London zone 3.
