Shame the female royals didn't walk too

Kudos to Anne who went against tradition and stood up front with her brothers and walked (and also to all the grandchildren who did the vigil) but it's a shame to see all the other females in the funeral stay crawling slowly in a car while all the men walked, just seems so old fashioned (particularly when Anne has gone against it and she is the eldest female!!)

I meant at Westminster (I missed the start of St georges). I was talking about processing behind the coffin in the cathedral - they didn't do that did they? I thought they walked in with their husbands earlier and were seated? Maybe I misunderstood but I'm sure the order of service online listed the people walking behind the coffin and it didn't include them?

Dinoteeth · 20/09/2022 09:33

Maybe your right they were seated before the coffin. Maybe it was partly due to the Philips kids, I don't remember seeing them coming in but they were definitely there.
But Fergie was definitely behind the girls. I was half expecting her to be there but not as prominent if that makes sense.

Ooh, touchy. You’re confusing making conversation with being offended.

You're confusing me with someone who cares.

LadyWithLapdog · 20/09/2022 13:52

@DancingBudgie you lost your cool and started swearing so I thought you did care or were offended in some way yourself 😂

No cool lost and I was speaking ( or typing ) in my normal manner, of which shit is proclaimed quite a lot.

Only the pall bearers were all Male, for obvious reasons.

BorgQueen

What were the obvious reasons please as I can't think of any?

Men are generally stronger than women. Carrying a 300kg lead lined coffin in front of 4bn people is better done by someone strong. Also their height would be important when balancing the coffin so easier to find men of similar heights to carry it.

NotEnoughTime · 20/09/2022 17:10

Thank you @35965a .

I wondered if it might be that.

They would definitely have been able to find strong women (who would be more than able to carry/lift the coffin) if they had wanted to of similar height so (in my opinion) it was a real shame that they didn't.

Dinoteeth · 20/09/2022 17:29

The might have been but they pulled them from the same regiment.
Who knows what other criteria there was, height, build, strenght 💪, ability to polish boots👢

Let's not take it away from those young men however they were chosen. They did amazingly well with the world watching them. A few proud mummy's out their going that's "my son"

BadNomad · 20/09/2022 17:42

They chose the 12 best soldiers from the Grenadier Guards to carry the coffin. The Grenadier Guards didn't even recruit their first female until 2020. I don't know how many they have now, but none must be within the top 12. That's not sexism.

Anne walked with her brothers at her father’s funeral too. Good on her. Best of luck to anyone who tries to get her to do something she doesn’t want to. Noticed she had Tim beside her in the church too, everyone else apart from Charles had to sit separately from their spouses.

Edward was next to his wife as they both shed a tear. William and Kate were together with the kids..,,

CruCru · 20/09/2022 18:00

I suspect that only the members of the RF who had been in the Armed Forces (however fleetingly) marched after the funeral.

NotEnoughTime · 20/09/2022 18:07

Dinoteeth

I don't mean to take away from them at all. They did a fantastic job under immense pressure.

Their Mum's should absolutely be proud Smile

LoisLane66 · 20/09/2022 18:14

Anne wore flat lace ups with her uniform. You can hardly expect the others in spikey heels to walk all the way down the mile long mall in posh frocks and 4 inch heels.

I'm sure if they had wanted to walk they could have found some compromise between 4in spikey & flat lace ups.

tellmewhyidontlikemondayfunerals · 20/09/2022 18:23

My guess is that they made a collective decision

So all in or all out

The men have served in military so have had basic marching training

LoisLane66 · 20/09/2022 18:23

The women also had hats and bags and dresses that might blow around in the wind. Can't expect their dresses or suits to be accessoried with loafers or flatties or lace-ups. You're way out of touch if you think that would go down well. If it rained they'd get soaked and their outfits were chosen before the day itself so nobody knew exactly what the weather would be like.

Possible.

Also Camilla had a broken toe, Kate with 2 young kids, Sophie might have felt unable to-she was very tearful.

tellmewhyidontlikemondayfunerals · 20/09/2022 18:31

I do worry about Meghan and Kate's ankles in those heels. How do they walked from car to abbey is beyond me

It is the military and I want the military to be made up of the strongest and best fighting specimens. Those that can carry the most weight across harsh battlefield situations I certainly don't want it to be representative of anything but the best. I'm sure on battle field the enemy won't fight less hard because their opponents are taking a representative approach to recruitment and not selecting the best. So no I'm not concerned about the make-up of the military in a country that is 85% white is largely white and male.

Very well said 👏

Dittyditty · 20/09/2022 19:04

Was I even watching the same funeral as some others here on MN?
1)
There were plenty of women involved .The FEMALE PM gave the reading .
2)
No one I observed seemed at all interested in what the women had on their feet
3)
Who walked and who did not was down to family position and Royal Protocols
4)
The male family DID have their partners with them but again Protocols meant that at times they were sat/stood without them in order to fulfil their royal Duties
5)
Probably most importantly…..
A Royal funeral of a very much loved and respected Monarch is not the platform to discuss sociological issues .I am not saying these issues are irrelevant ,but respect alone should tell all those angry posters that this was about our late Queen .This is not the thread on which to vent people.

saffy2 · 20/09/2022 19:11

The women who went in the cars were daughters and grand daughters IN LAW. Anne is a daughter. Blood relative. I think that’s the difference.

tabby007 · 20/09/2022 19:27

I think only royals directly related by blood to the family done the walk.
Which is why it was Charles, Anne, Andrew, Edward, William and Harry but not Kate, Meghan, Sophie etc
So not sexist, just family by relation only.

Eh?
Tim the only son in law - walked
Granddaughters, Zara, Bea, Eugenie all got a lift.

I think it might have been choice esp when it came to the Daughters in law and the Granddaughters

But the military isn't all about fighting: there are doctors, nurses, communications experts, logistics personnel, engineers, pilots, technicians, vets, cooks, navigators, military police etc.
It's not all about heft or being the best fighting specimens. Most will never be anywhere near a battlefield.
Where there is an advantage to being big and tough I have no problem with big tough people fulfilling these roles, but that is not required for a significant proportion of military positions.
