I've been finding this mesmerising so thought I'd create a dedicated thread.
Saw Justin Trudeau and his wife pass through earlier.

I literally could watch all day! The mix of different people, ages etc.

SpinCityBlues · 17/09/2022 21:18

I appreciate the way that the live feed pays special attention to the veterans.

Those candles that are burning.

Have they been the same ones since the start or do they put up new ones?

I've been periodically watching, and have wondered the same!
Havent seen anyone changing them, yet they always look the same height, never getting stubby!

lollipoprainbow · 17/09/2022 21:26

Do you think in the coming weeks there'll be support groups set up for those of us suffering from mourn porn withdrawal?

Is it weird to say I'll be flat when it's all over on Monday ConfusedConfused

mumof2andstillsurviving · 17/09/2022 21:27

I find it hypnotic and tranquil. I can't believe his quiet it is. And the change of guards is mesmerising. It works like clockwork

They were really tall on the first day. But since yesterday seem to be a very similar height.

Maybe by tomorrow if they're really low then definitely the same ones.

It's not letting me past a picture, sorry, but The Queue reminds me of Antony Gormley's installation "Field for the British Isles".

Thousands of little figures clustered together, all very similar, but all unique. Apparently people seeing it for the first time burst in to tears.

Thanks for mentioning that piece of art, I'd never seen it before, incredible! Can see why it reminds you of this.

Apparently at least 2 universities are interviewing the queue goers and studying the queue Grin

I think it's a wonderful testament to their love of their Grandmother that they wanted to do that knowing the Public would be filing past.

I imagine they watched earlier footage to prepare themselves and knew exactly what to expect.

Very well done

Yes I imagine they must have all felt very proud to honour their grandmother and there is no way Sophie and Edward would have made their children do anything they were not comfortable with so I don’t think anyone on here needs to be concerned.

Wonderful, isn't it?!

I think The Queue has taken on a life of its own because in some deep way it is representative of us. The wonderful mix of human beings in all their infinite variety and essential similarity.

Belledan1 · 17/09/2022 21:54

Save me starting new thread. Only just got to see the grandkids bit. Who are the people next to Sophie and Edward. There was a pregnant lady too. Tried to Google it. Just wondering. Thanks.

mumof2andstillsurviving · 17/09/2022 21:58

I've been fascinated by what people do when they get their moment; bowing, curtsying, nodding, crossing themselves, saluting. There appears to be little clusters of the same behaviours; like people don't know what to do so they copying the person in front. Some are really milking their part, but after so many hours in the queue they can do what they like (within reason!). I thought people were like rabbits In headlights when King Charles and his siblings were holding vigil

I think this has shown us the hidden people. The respectful. The religious. The tolerant. A world away from the shouters on Twitter.

You're just seeing a certain group though. And how do you know their views?

User287264 · 17/09/2022 22:03

The candles can burn for 24 hours and are changed when the hall is closed for cleaning. They were talking about it on TV last night

FluffytheGoldfish · 17/09/2022 22:07

I was surprised to find my very republican DH watching it when I got home from work last week. But he was right, the people are fascinating.
I'm sure I spotted a woman in her Land Army uniform the other morning.

I don't. I see people crossing themselves, making salutes and bowing their heads. I respect them

It's a huge group of people (over the days) with a common purpose, to queue and walk past the catafalque in Westminster Hall. We don't know their individual motives, but they all went there to do that and it isn't Stalin's Russia, no one has made them.

As many have pointed out, the demographic is very diverse. People in wheelchairs, blind people, young and old soldiers with their medals, middle aged women and their Mums, men in morning suits, Beckham, babies in slings, people crossing themselves in both the Catholic and the Orthodox way ( to respect a Protestant monarch) a Native American in a warbonnet, young black men in gym gear, women in saris and hijab. I have not been watching for more than a few minutes at a time but I saw all these (not Becks, admittedly, missed him Grin)

Whatever their purpose, they are doing the same thing at the same time and it is fascinating and for some of us, very moving.

I wonder if they're looking at what happens when you require a crowd to put their phones away.

It is interesting. But to attribute views about being tolerant and religious is something that can't be done. Some may well be. Who knows....

DS is studying psychology and sociology. I suggested he watch it as it's an interesting event to see and to observe.

How are people managing kids ? It's 10.30pm and there are still kids there. Mine can't do 10 mins at a supermarket queue ? 13 hours in a queue with a child ... No thanks...

I can only imagine it's been 13 hours of Netflix on iPads in the queue.

I wonder how many parents have had to abandon the queue..?

Janesdufflecoat · 17/09/2022 22:57

I love I! It's so interesting, young people, old people, all Nationalities!

I'm surprised by the bowing & curtsying, I remember the Queen Mother lying in State but my memory has people just filing passed! Maybe because she was the Queen mum & not the Queen!

I kept checking in to view it on my phone this week, today I worked out how to get it on the 'big tv'!

JanglyBeads · 17/09/2022 23:06

The sociologist Stephen Reicher has tweeted about research that is being done on the reasons for being in the queue, also other beliefs and influences eg do they vote Tory, do they support the death penalty. Fascinating.
