Why did Wayne Couzens get a whole life tariff?

Obviously he deserves it - and so much more - for what he put that poor girl through, but why did he get a whole life sentence rather than just a life sentence with a fixed term?

This is so strange I'm actually watching a Documentary about how that disgusting beast was caught (as I type)

I think its probably because he abused his Authotitve Powers to arrest poor Sarah. She Must have had her absolutely terrified in that car. Obviously we don't knowwhat if anything was said to her. Did he taunt her and tell her exactly what he was put her through or keep her in silence and make her wonder. Which is the lesser of the 2 evils knowing or not knowing.
This murder was very very mertaculosly planned and premeditated by a supposedly man or law. He was or rather is that evil he took her family for a day where he buried her body.I

What's the documentary called?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/09/2022 16:56

I hope he lives to a very very long age.

Exclusive: How they caught Sarah Everards Killer. (Sky news)
It was recommended to me on YouTube.

AquaticSewingMachine · 16/09/2022 17:01

I also think that Sarah was almost certainly not his first victim. It was much too slick and planned a murder for a first one. Nobody erupts overnight into such well-rehearsed violence; he has all the hallmarks of a serial killer.

He lived near me. Reports of his movements after the kidnap have him going to my local Homebase to buy tools to cover up his hideous crime. Absolutely petrifying to think that this man was in such a position of power.

Did you know him personally.

Yeah it is, 2 Boys

unicormb · 16/09/2022 17:21

No of course I didn't know him @Awwlookatmybabyspider but given the timings of his movements - which the media published in the aftermath in minute detail - it's very possible I could have passed him on the school run. And that made me shudder when I read it.

Rebelmcstreettuff · 16/09/2022 17:26

Why did David McGreavy who killed 3 children and impailed them on garden railings not receive a whole life tariff? He served 46 years and is now free.

That case doesn't sound as though it was premeditated.

Google tells me whole life sentences were introduced in 1983 ,I assume they can't be applied retrospectively
That was an awful case though I watched a documentary about it.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 16/09/2022 17:33

It’s almost too grim for words to think that being able to regularly abuse vulnerable women sex workers was the only thing stopping him from raping and murdering random members of the public. it doesn’t bear thinking about.

What has happened to his wife? Has she divorced him? It must be so horrendous to live with someone not knowing what they’re capable of.

I know someone whose best friend is Christopher Halliwell’s son. When he was convicted the family had no idea, there was never even a hint as to the kind of person he was.

EL8888 · 16/09/2022 17:35

I also doubt she was the only murder victim. They may well be others or other women he attempted to murder.

Im intrigued about why he was so sloppy about the vehicle that was used. Maybe he was just too busy getting off on it all to focus on that detail 🤮

EL8888 · 16/09/2022 17:36

@GhostFromTheOtherSide not sure about his wife? If l was her then l would be divorcing him ASAP, changing mine / my children’s names and moving house

Blossomandbee · 16/09/2022 17:45

It was in the news that his wife had visited him in jail. You would hope it would be only to deliver divorce papers.

EL8888 · 16/09/2022 17:48

@Blossomandbee l would have thrown them over the table and left at speed

Hiddenplastic · 16/09/2022 17:58

Yes I believe a 'whole life sentence' means what the Americans would refer to as 'Life without the possibility of parole'. In other words, once the inevitable appeals are exhausted, there is zero chance of you ever getting out. I hope in some very small way, this brings some peace to Sarah's family.

As j recall from the Emma Kenney documentary, it was basically from CCTV he didn't appear to makexany attempt to disguise his appearance and being London there was CCTV everywhere, he was also caught very quickly .

EL8888 · 16/09/2022 19:44

@x2boys exactly, it wasn’t that hard. Hadn’t he also hired the car in his own name?

Yes i believe so such an odd case ,then he came up with some bullshit when they arrested him that he was in loads of debt and a trafficking gang had contacted to say he needed to provide a girl to be trafficked or they would target his family really bizarre.

A long slow painful death would be the best sentence he could have had.
