What temp will you set your heating at this Winter?

Bellysmackers · 15/09/2022 15:36

I usually set mine to a toasty 22 degrees as I'm always cold and loooove a warm house.
Obviously with the cost of heating I'll need to reasses, thinking maybe 20 but hubby says 18. What temperature do you think is comfortable during Autumn/Winter and what temperature will you be setting your heating at??

18 - 21 depending on what I am doing, same as every other year

Oblomov22 · 15/09/2022 18:29

Same as always.19.

dudsville · 15/09/2022 18:33

We're going to see what it's like at 16.5. We always have it off over night. We'll see how quickly we cave at16.5!

CaptainMum · 15/09/2022 18:34

Ours was 15/16 when on occasionally last year. It may be lower this year with more layering required

emerald7 · 15/09/2022 18:36

Think we will just wear layers and try save on the energy bills because it's ridiculous.

curvymumma79 · 15/09/2022 18:43

I wonder if anyone can confirm this. I was once told that if you set you heating to 18 and leave it on, once the house has warmed up, it will rarely kick in. Is there any logic in this?

DH wants to set it to timers when we do put it on, a few hours, here and there, but that doesn't make sense to me.

carameldecaflatte · 15/09/2022 18:46

I doubt if we can afford to set it above 14 this winter.

GiltEdges · 15/09/2022 18:46

DH can’t tolerate the heating on any higher than 21, so I imagine it will be 20-21 as usual. My personal preference would be 22. We have it on a timer to turn off at midnight and come back on at 5am Nov-February as we both WFH so need it on during the day.

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/09/2022 18:46

Mine will be off apart from an hour a day. Never had heating on overnight even before the energy crisis. Have bought lots of things to help me and DS cope with it. Hoping for a mild winter. Managed perfectly well last year.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 15/09/2022 18:48

Not at all in the morning as we literally get up , have a quick shower , brekkie and out the door so we don't really sit down and think about the temperature
Evenings ,.no more than 20 degrees and around 1/2 hour before the 1st person comes in from work so around 5.30pm until about 9pm
I might try 19 degrees, but I've tried that before unsuccessfully
I grew up cold as a child so dont want my children to remember being cold at home

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 15/09/2022 18:49

And also we dony have very many radiators in the home so its difficult to heat well

MinervaTerrathorn · 15/09/2022 18:51

Setting to 16, an hour in the morning and two in the evening. Off at night, I need that drop in temperature to sleep and like a warm bed in a cool room.

Always had it at 17, occasionally 18 until this year when I dropped it to 16 in January. If money was no object it wouldn't be higher than 18 as I don't feel comfortable in overly warm heated houses.

Silverpossum · 15/09/2022 18:55

We usually do for 17 or 18 but the thermostat's in the hallway so I reckon other rooms get warmer than that. We'll aim to stick at 17 and wear Oodies

MinervaTerrathorn · 15/09/2022 18:58

Actually I may trial not putting it on on weekday mornings. Realised that DS is now leaving the house at 7:30am for college (I leave at 8) so hardly seems worth it.

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 15/09/2022 18:58
  1. Ours is always at 18.
MintJulia · 15/09/2022 18:59

14 degrees for background warmth but I have a log burner that heats most of the ground floor, and the flue goes up through ds' bedroom wall, so provides gentle heat for him upstairs too. I think I have enough wood to see us through to spring.

Off completely overnight

Babdoc · 15/09/2022 18:59

I don’t have a whole house thermostat, just individual radiator thermostats. Plus an open log fire in the sitting room, and electric underfloor heating in the kitchen/diner.
I will probably use more logs (I have half a ton still stacked in the garage from last winter), and turn down the radiators in spare rooms, but I intend to keep cosy in the rooms I actually inhabit.
As a single pensioner, I don’t have huge outgoings, the mortgage was paid off by my DH’s death 30 years ago, and I have three pensions plus investments, so I can suck up the increased fuel bills.

JaninaDuszejko · 15/09/2022 19:04

It depends how well insulated your house is though. My Mum had a modern architect designed house, the house is incredibly well insulated, she has ground source heating and her electricity comes from her wind turbine. She would tell your her heating was set at 16C but I wear shorts and tshirt in her house so I would say it's actually more like 22-23C. The temperature is very consistent and there are no drafts. Our house is older and draftier, we've got a thermostat that can be moved about from room to room and it took a while to work out which was the best room to put it in at which temperature. We have it in the playroom set at 19.5C, if we put it in the warmer sitting room we'd need to set it to about 22C before the heating warmed the rest of the house sufficiently. They have different aspects, different curtain treatments and different sized radiators despitebeing similar sizes.

DumpedByText · 15/09/2022 19:11

Do you leave your heating on constant and on overnight?

Mrsmch123 · 15/09/2022 19:12

22, I like to be toasty. With the occasional boost.

MinervaTerrathorn · 15/09/2022 19:16

Ours set to 16 is also 16 in our sitting room (I've checked with the thermometer). Usually 17 upstairs despite the radiators being off.

sagalooshoe · 15/09/2022 17:30

Oh wow, I've just realised the point of porches - they are airlocks to stop the cold air whooshing through the house!

Why have i never realised this before? Glad I've got one now!

We have a porch. We also have a husband who comes in the front door and then opens the lounge door before closing the front door, so having a porch is an utter waste of time. He is also very good at going out of the back door and leaving it open while he takes something down to the bin at the bottom of the garden.

TooHotToRamble · 15/09/2022 19:25

My thermostat is currently telling me it's 20 degrees in here and it's a bit chilly. I have a jumper on and my warm sheepskin slippers. I also usually have my heating set at 22 over winter. 🙁

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 15/09/2022 20:54

Ours is only on for 30-60 mins in the morning and then 2-4 hours max in the evening, depending on weather and when we are home.

Floralnomad · 15/09/2022 20:59

Ours is on 24/7 , when I’m awake it’s set to whatever temp it needs to be at for me to be comfortable and overnight it’s on 15 , it hasn’t come on overnight for quite a few years ( SE England) . I’ve not had it turned up enough to come on at all yet , I’m sitting in a T shirt and long shorts with a fan on in my lounge at the moment and we still have fans on in the bedrooms overnight .
