What temp will you set your heating at this Winter?

I usually set mine to a toasty 22 degrees as I'm always cold and loooove a warm house.
Obviously with the cost of heating I'll need to reasses, thinking maybe 20 but hubby says 18. What temperature do you think is comfortable during Autumn/Winter and what temperature will you be setting your heating at??

My bathroom is already registering 18 degrees on the thermostat and there's no way it feels cold enough to put the heating on. Are some people putting theirs on already then?

Not yet but the house is down to 20c and the outdoor temp is forecast to be 7c tomorrow. I suppose tonight will be the tipping point and the heating will come on tomorrow.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/09/2022 17:13

Set it up already. 18 degrees from half an hour before we get up until we leave for work. Then 12 degrees all day, back up to 18 for half an hour before we get home, until half an hour after, then down to 12 and will rely on our new wood burner. See how we go.

purpledagger · 15/09/2022 17:17

I've always just whacked the heating on without thinking about it Blush, but I'm scared to do that this year, with prices going up. We got a new boiler a few months ago with a Hive thermostat, so we need to play around with the heating, but a least we can control it from our phones.

I have a home based job, but last year, I didn't put the heating on until just before the children got home from school, so I made do with thick jumpers and hot water bottles. I'm going to try and do the same this winter.

TimBoothseyes · 15/09/2022 17:20

Haven't put mine on yet but it will probably be 20 -21 when I'm in and off when I'm out and overnight, which is what I normally do. I do have a lot of credit on my pre-pay meter though so am not overly concerned this winter....might be a different matter next winter though.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 15/09/2022 17:23

We have a house that is too big and too inefficient and too draughty. We plan to shut down every room we do not use (leaving our bedroom, our sitting room and the DCs bedrooms... and there is a discussion about the dining room). We usually are about 19 degrees but plan to try and be 17.5 degrees.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 15/09/2022 17:25

To add- DH has always been good about layers. Me not so much as I do not like feeling restricted by clothes but I am going to suck it up. The DCs have thermals in winter anyway so they will have those.

Surtsey · 15/09/2022 17:27

Probably 19 or 20, but our house is difficult to heat. We have a lounge-diner with stairs going up to the landing so all warm air rises straight upstairs, and front and back doors that open straight in to the room. The temperature can drop 10 degrees the minute anyone opens a door.

CutesyUserName · 15/09/2022 17:28

Probably 16.5 or 17 during the day, off at night.

Oh wow, I've just realised the point of porches - they are airlocks to stop the cold air whooshing through the house!

Why have i never realised this before? Glad I've got one now!

orangeisthenewpuce · 15/09/2022 17:31

Ours in usually 18 or 19 in the morning for an hour then the same for a few hours in the evening. It's off during the night unless it's really, really freezing. I sleep with a summer duvet during the winter. I hate being hot.

HuzzahIndeed · 15/09/2022 17:32

Same as usual, between 16-18 most of the time. I hate a too hot house. I would be so uncomfortable at 22!

Our house is drafty (we've tried to reduce that this summer) so even if we turn the heating up, it wouldn't make much difference to how the house feels.

tigger1001 · 15/09/2022 17:32

It's usually set for 18 degrees when we are home, and on frost setting when at work and overnight. Won't be on the timer until November, later if it's a mild November. Off by 1st March

Will be the same this year but will decrease the time it's set for 18 degrees. We have a couple of heated throws and kuddly's so will be keeping warm that way as much as we can.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/09/2022 17:33

I’m not planning adjusting it, it comes on in the morning for up to an hour then depending on weather from about 4pm to 10pm max. I’m hoping to reduce electricity wastage thought or at least stop everyone else in the household wasting electricity.

HuzzahIndeed · 15/09/2022 17:36

@Surtsey sounds similar to our set up. Have you tried curtains over the doors? Although the door still opens, it seems to stop the heat swooshing out so much.

Also, the ceiling at the top of the stairs is a great place to hang a clothes airer from the ceiling! Make the most of the hot air up there.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/09/2022 17:38

Rarely above 20.

LavenderfortheBees · 15/09/2022 17:41

Last winter I did 17° for an hour in the morning and 2-3 hours in the evening. I would boost to 18° from my phone for a bit if cold. When wfh would keep the thermostat at 15-16° during the day and layer up. Off at night.

Have a heated throw for the sofa, heated blanket for the bed and a heat pad for the cats I put on overnight. We are also youngish, healthy and no DC so easy to keep it cooler. DP prefers it colder.

Scottishskifun · 15/09/2022 17:45

We set it to 18 degrees then 16 from 10pm but qe have a wood burner which easily heats the house to 22 degrees when put on. We have bought extra wood for this year.

We are still on a fix til next year but found they like to put my DD up regardless of being in credit by quite a way so try and keep usage low as on mat leave so need to keep bills tightly controlled.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 15/09/2022 17:48

21-22 first thing in the morning and when we get home from work. We don't have heating when we're in bed.

gogohmm · 15/09/2022 17:48

18 as always. It's plenty warm enough in a light cardigan or jumper

WelcomeEverythingIsFine · 15/09/2022 17:49

Mine is 17, will have a plug in blanket and possibly an additional blanket! I WFH and can’t afford to heat more than that without making significant sacrifice!!

AsterixInEngland · 15/09/2022 17:50

You’ll have people who says they are feeling fine at 15oC.
Studies have shown that men feel confortable at 18oC, women at 19oC (that’s why trains temperatures is set at 18oC).

However, I think it’s very personal. Some people tend to run hot and prefer low temperatures, others are the opposite.
I feel cold quickly (eg I have known to use a blanket during the day whilst in the recliner. That was when it was hot. I felt cold and was cold to touch…..).

So, Imo, there is no right or wrong answer to your question.Try it out. Put some layers on. But don’t expect that it will be xxxoC just because MN said it’s confortable)

(Of course, the coat of the heating might well dictate how much. You can heat the house. But that’s. Different question)

gogohmm · 15/09/2022 17:50

Oh and off from 9am until 4pm (anyone off can do something active or go out) and off from 8.30pm until 6.30am. Frost stat is set at 12 degrees and has never kicked in

gogohmm · 15/09/2022 17:52

It's not on at all yet, very much still summer in the sw -22 degrees today

Allmarbleslost · 15/09/2022 17:53

Ours is usually on 18. On for an hour in the morning, 5-6 hours in the evening and off overnight. Might try turning it down to 17 but I'm not hopeful.

Sgtmajormummy · 15/09/2022 18:14

We have centralized heating so that’s decided by the town council, even for private buildings. Italy is very dependent on Russian gas.

We’ll be getting 19 (previously 20) degrees for 2 hours in the morning, two hours at lunchtime and 4 hours in the evening.
They’ve also decreed to switch on the central heating a week later and switch off a week earlier. In cold snaps etc. it can be increased.
Our apartment is well insulated and glazed so I only notice the heating has gone off at about midday, half an hour before it comes back on.
Last year we were sweltering at 20 degrees and the radiators cranked down to 2 so we’re not expecting to suffer. But the bill is bound to be higher.
