anyone queuing to see the coffin in London atm?

1000 replies

DickDarstedly · 14/09/2022 16:56

I am wondering how long the queue is and how the organisation is working out. Are there enough toilets? Is it true that the wristband allows you to leave and come back?

*Brace yourself, @HauntedDishcloth, they’re not keen on those who want to understand why.
*
Oh chill out and make a thread .

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 12:33

If you're actually that bothered.

Herejustforthisone · 15/09/2022 12:35

I wasn’t particularly, I just thought it might be interesting to ask on an existing one. Bad idea, it would seem.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 15/09/2022 12:36

Why? Curiosity, willingness to learn about people, society, etc There is no need to know, just a desire because it's interesting to think about different things! & these are particularly unusual things due to the circumstances going on at the current time. There's no law that people have to explain themselves in this context but asking is harmless. In turn, why are you het up about it?

I'm not het up, but they aren't actually asking to want to learn why. People are asking and passing judgement on those who want to see the coffin. Or saying they still don't understand when told of the reasons.

TeenDivided · 15/09/2022 12:37

4.1 miles now.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 12:38

I’d like to have that sense of sparse quietness at the time in there

'sparse quietnesses'

Special in our day and age

peridito · 15/09/2022 12:38

maybe show some understanding towards those of us who are bemused by the thinking of those who want to view a coffin .

@Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious You've quoted the above from my post but your remarks are ,I presume just random and not directed at me . However ,to be clear
I made the above remark because so many posters were saying stuff along the lines of "why don't you get it ,isn't it obvious "etc etc and I felt that understanding (and even acceptance ) of other views should be possible .

You don't need to understand someone's reasonings behind it,
As I've said I do have some understanding of why people have gone.
nor do you need to tell someone that you can't understand why they want to do it I've certainly not told anyone that I can't understand why they're queuing People have their own reasons, that you may not understand, but really, you don't need to know the reasons beyond me why you've made this remark ,how have you got the idea that I need to know their reasons ? I might be interested in hearing them ,but that is different .
There's really no need to turn my post into an argument .

All those mentioning about liquids being taking off them, I am on 4 hourly liquid opioids? What about situations like this, liquid medications etc

I think you would be totally fine if it’s prescription medicine

if you have a medical issue & require the ‘accessible ‘ route that was taking 40 min/2 hours vs my 9 last night so worth investigating: there is another thread on MN about that

LisbonKid · 15/09/2022 12:40

WOW!!!
have folk taken time off work and lives for this?
Really?
what a joke these folk are.
go do a good deed for a living older person…

That's about harsh, they haven't dragged you along! Leave them be, it's up them it's their lives and their decisions. No need to be so rude about it 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've just exited. It's alMost surreal as it's so still in there. I'm very very glad I came.

It's taken me just over 5 hours but I think with the length of the queue now it'll be more like 8.

Thanks for reporting back @RhubarbCrumbled : sounds like you made very good time and it was a good experience for you

Re people queuing all night - obviously it’s not much fun but many people couldn’t get time off work in the day (there were several priests, people working in schools etc in the queue with us). I went overnight as that was when a friend could make it due to work/pre booked travel and I preferred to have company for the long wait even though it’s v v safe.

I think some people also thought it might be quicker at night but there was a delay in the early hours as there was cleaning which we were not aware of, hence those going through later being faster

We were optimistic meeting at 8.30 that we might be getting last tube home just gone midnight 😂

Antarcticant · 15/09/2022 12:55

Not that I can
go but I would struggle with this - don't think I've got a small bag that doesn't have a front slip/zip pocket:

"Each person is only allowed to take in one small bag with a single opening or zip"

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 15/09/2022 12:57

My friend joined the queue about 10pm last night it took 8.5 hours. She said it was one of the most moving experiences of her life. I want to go but have commitments I am finding it hard moving. Meanwhile the queue is just getting longer and longer......

Wonnle · 14/09/2022 22:19

It's beyond madness now .

All mass/social media driven sadly :(

How can it be madness ? It’s a free society. If people want to go and pay their respects it’s entirely up to them . No one is forcing them. Most of our nans did not dedicate their lives to the country and had a normal respectful funeral . This is a situation of deep tradition. But everyone has a choice in their feelings about it .

These comments are getting really tiresome now.

Would people say the same thing about people making the pilgramicdge to Mecca? Yes it's a bit different as it's queuing for religious reasons, but it's something they feel they must do.

jacostajune · 15/09/2022 13:07

What is the queue length now? I cant open the YouTube feed for some reason.

MrsFezziwig · 15/09/2022 13:08

Herejustforthisone · 15/09/2022 12:29

Well, you’ve all certainly proven the comments in the other threads correct. What a shame.

Still here, @Herejustforthisone ? I thought you said you were going?

TeenDivided · 15/09/2022 13:08

4.2 miles

I was concerned about the bag thing too (as only read guidance when I was in the queue 😂) but any ‘normal’ day bag seems fine - like a shopping bag or ‘kids/school’ style backpack (which I had). Mine has a couple of front pockets etc but that was not an issue, I think they just want security to move quickly at the scanners at the end and checking millions of pockets is not ideal

in the end they have trays like at the airport so you empty your bags

I actually took a small backpack (clothes, blanket) & a cloth shopping bag for food & drinks - that was fine as food was consumed/donated by the end and I was wearing my extra clothes

I think people only need the bag drop if you have really excessive amounts of stuff (and I would avoid as it adds extra time to your journey). We saw lots of camping chairs abandoned on the route so I hope some enterprising Londoners will pick up the extras today!

forgotmyusername1 · 15/09/2022 13:16

If people want to go then fine (sounds a nightmare but crack on)

cannot for the life of me understand why people are taking children who are younger than teenagers. They must be bored out of their minds.

HonorHiding · 15/09/2022 13:16

According to the BBC news, the Vigil of the Princes (the King and his siblings) will be tomorrow (Friday) night at 7.30pm for 15 minutes.

BlooberryBiskits · 15/09/2022 13:17

PS - they are VERY strict on no liquids at all. You will have to ditch any cosmetic items/hand sanitizer etc so don’t take big new bottles of anything. I think this would apply even for kids/baby products (not sure about formula).

There are shops right at the exit/Westminster tube to replace anything you truly need

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 15/09/2022 13:18

A friend went through about 40 minutes ago and had queued just over 8 hours to get in. Queue moves pretty constantly constantly so you wouldn't be able to lie down and sleep even if you wanted to. Apparently queue has pretty much doubled in length from when they joined around 4am-ish.

I found this uncomfortable viewing when I saw a bit of it.
