anyone queuing to see the coffin in London atm?

I am wondering how long the queue is and how the organisation is working out. Are there enough toilets? Is it true that the wristband allows you to leave and come back?

I just hope that those PP who did queue through the night and have now seen her can now go home to their beds and don't have to head straight to work!

Yes. It's open 24hrs until 6.30am on the 19th.

Not quite - it closes for cleaning for about an hour - between 0200-0300 this morning - the live feed goes black whilst that happend

VinoDino · 15/09/2022 09:31

She could quite easily have retired earlier. Maybe she enjoyed what she did. We all have constraints aswell, things we have to do that bore us.....shopping, ironing, filling the car with petrol, making small talk, tolerating in laws etc.

She took an oath to serve and she adhered to it, that's admirable. The boring constraints you've listed can't be compared to that of the Queen. If I can't be assed filling up my car I won't. No one will care. If the Queen couldn't be bothered to meeting a bunch of old ladies at the WI in Southend that's a different matter.

Can you please stop derailing this thread arguing over your incredulity, or not as the case may be, of wanting to see the Queen lying in state. Start another thread to argue and leave this one for those interested in the answer to OP's questions.

There are so many other threads where pp can use an outlet for not wanting to join in.

No one on this thread cares if they do it don’t. But it would be nice for it not to be detailed.

theDudesmummy · 15/09/2022 09:32

It's not about her being a "hero" of some kind. She was the figurehead of a cultural institution which a specific society has chosen to keep in place over many centuries. She may have had personal qualities which were admirable, or were not admirable. She may have family members who were likewise admirable or otherwise. I am not a royalist, I deeply disapprove of many aspects of the system, but that is a separate issue from understanding that we are watching a great cultural event. (Great in the sense of significant, not necessarily desirable). It means different things to different people, and I am sure for a significant proportion of the people in The Queue the sense of community and common purpose with fellow human beings is the main reason they are there.

Is it a privileged life though? Yes access to enormous wealth which you can't spend now you please like a lottery winner, but that's where the privilege ends for me.

Your life mapped out and dictated to, someone around you all the time, the mundane and boring engagements with people who you can't be bothered to speak to but have to and be polite with it regardless. Worked up until 96 years of age when anyone else would've been enjoying years of retirement. Stuff that.

Painting the Queen as a vulnerable little old lady who had no agency is a bit daft when she was more than capable of lobbying the UK government.

This is what I mean by the zig zag bit in case it helps anyone - it’s I think called the Palace Gardens (?) and is directly in front of Westminster Hall on the North side of the river

It's Victoria Gardens, and if they stay open there are proper public loos at the very northernmost tip

That's a really good point. The Queen worked every single day of her life. She had to learn the intricacies of diplomacy, other countries, key figures, prime ministers, UK and international events, never to put a foot wrong. Paperwork, briefings, endless workstreams. Apparently could speedread and worked really hard, had a fantastic memory and was able to greet every dignitary with an anecdote about their own country or culture. There are some good documentaries on iPlayer to show just how exhausting and relentless the job of being Queen actually is. It's not just breakfast in bed and swanning about.

Except I didn't paint her as a vulnerable little old lady with no agency. Just someone who I don't view as having a privileged life.

More like a gilded cage

theDudesmummy · 15/09/2022 09:37

@theworldhas I agree that questioning the ritual (and by extension questioning tradition and prevailing cultural norms and mores) is just as human as participating in it. As is ignoring it, decrying it, opposing it, seeking to abolish it. What I don't "get" is the people who say they don't "get" it that some people would seek to participate.

A bit too meta for this time in the morning maybe.

Dad with a 4 yr old and a baby in a sling.
Hardcore!

"Has anyone seen many children going through? Would love to go but bit nervous how my nearly-3 year old would cope with it. Older two would be fine I think."

I've seen toddlers going through. Squawking and crying and wittering away. Ruins it for everyone else and is the opposite of respectful. So no, don't take a 3 year old.

All the kids I've seen have been awed into silence. I'd take my chances.

RhubarbCrumbled · 15/09/2022 09:47

I've just reached the wiggly bit after 3 hours and it's moving really quickly. It's definitely not going to be 8 hours. However, I joined just before The Globe and the back of the queue is much further back now.

LarryBlackmonsCodpiece · 15/09/2022 09:47

I get it, I understand, I went to/was dragged to many Trooping Of The Colour as a child, I have watched many of the weddings, I just think it is all very outdated.

I am very uncomfortable with their hoarding of UK wealth & land, especially in our current climate with so many people struggling, it feels incredibly wrong, it’s not a good look. I’ll duck out now, good luck to those queuing I hope your wait isn’t too long.

MummyBobbles · 15/09/2022 09:48

My friend, who is a police officer, has just finished her shift at the palace and she said the wait is 8 hours currently.

RhubarbCrumbled · 15/09/2022 09:48

Everyone is super friendly and very good natured! We've only had one attempted queue jump before the wristband section but they were given short shrift!!
Toilets are grim in places, ok in others but there are plenty.

Quweenie · 15/09/2022 01:23

At the risk of sounding stupid… what’s the reason for this?

Explosives/acid/paint could all be concealed in this way.

ThisUserNameIsAvailableOk · 15/09/2022 09:54

Awed into silence? They've not a clue what's going on.

At 2215 last night a kid shouted his way through, all you could hear were the echos of him wittering on. His Dad held him up to see the coffin and he started coughing 🤷🏽‍♀️😂

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 09:58

Probably 👍🏻

ThisUserNameIsAvailableOk · 15/09/2022 09:58

"Explosives/acid/paint could all be concealed in this way."

Indeed, I find it amazing that people don't understand this in this day and age

SpinCityBlues · 15/09/2022 10:02

I watched some of the live feed in the early hours because of insomnia, having seen the thread here, and I agree it's fascinating. The people watching is 'rich pickings'.

Btw the Mail is reporting (so take it with a pinch of salt) that joining the queue may have to end as early as Saturday night to make sure that everyone in it gets through by Monday at 6.30am. (I think that's what it's saying.)

I would have stood for 30 days in the rain to see my Nan. No one's asking you to do it so keep your opinion to yourself if you don't have a helpful comment.
