How long was your teenager an arse hole for?

DS is 13 and a half. He's had a complete personality transplant in the last few months. Full Kevin and Perry. I miss my lovely boy so much! I've no idea how to parent this imposter. How long does it tend to last?

We're at 16 and still counting. No signs of it getting better. Occasional glimpses of a nice kid

TheConicalFlask · 14/09/2022 16:34

13-16 were the nightmare years for my first son. My second son is nearly 15 and he hasn't changed at all attitude wise.

cheeseandpeanutbutter · 14/09/2022 16:35

It got better in the 6th form but only really lovely from 22 😂

Beautifulsunflowers · 14/09/2022 16:36

Parenting teenagers is in a league of its own!!

SweetFannyAdamsDog · 14/09/2022 16:36

Still is and he's in his twenties. Sorry. My other 2 are ok though, late teenagers.

Shortandfurry301 · 14/09/2022 16:37

14 to 18 was the worst here (with girls)!

Bettyboo12 · 14/09/2022 16:41

17 and nearly 18 and still going.

Lindy2 · 14/09/2022 16:43

We're at age 14 now and definitely no real improvement.

At age 13 it was like a switch being turned and this sulky teenager appeared.

Occasionally we get glimpses of the funny, kind child that I know is there.

It's definitely out with family at that age and friends become the main focus. I'm hoping when she leaves school things will get better.

DowntonCrabby · 14/09/2022 16:43

Our almost 18 year old has never had a moment’s arseholery in her life.
I suspect the pre-teen will make up for that in the years to come!

HermioneWeasley · 14/09/2022 16:47

DS is 16 and a joy

MissRainbowBrite · 14/09/2022 16:47

From 13-15ish they are utter arseholes form our experience with DS, he's now 17 and a half and it's about and 80/20 split with the majority being lovely and the 20 being arsehole. It does get better, teen boys are hard work.

HermioneWeasley · 14/09/2022 16:47

Sorry, should have said he went through the grunty period and has come out of it and is lovely

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 14/09/2022 16:50

Ds1 13-16, ds2 never! . Still have another 2 ds to get through the teen years though

CuteCillian · 14/09/2022 16:50

DD2 was horrific between 14 and 17, something she acknowledges now and cannot believe her own behaviour.
Weirdly my others are easy and pleasant teens, don't know why they vary so much.

purfectpuss · 14/09/2022 16:59

Mine is 17 and we saw some glimpses of a normal person in there during the summer holidays- but since back to school they are back to grunting in and out of their pit again.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 14/09/2022 17:01

13-17, but only really totally human at 24.

abovedecknotbelow · 14/09/2022 17:03

Mine aren't there yet but I was 17 when I came out the other side, my sister more like 22. I'm ducking dreading it with twin girls.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 14/09/2022 17:03

One of the points of them being an arsehole is that you will do your utmost to help them move on to University or wherever, and not be distraught that your lovely child has gone, but relieved that the monster has moved on.

arthurfowlermood · 14/09/2022 17:04

22!! Different person, laughs at how she was such an arsehole.

Shortandfurry301 · 14/09/2022 17:08

It's meant to be when the period of plasticity ends in the teenage brain and your frontal cortex links up with your limbic system (or something like that!) around twenty four or twenty five years of age I think!

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 14/09/2022 17:11

2.5yrs and counting, Ds1 is currently 16.5yo. There are signs of pleasantry re-emerging but he's just started sixth form and the stress of that is counter active.

Motnight · 14/09/2022 17:13

Became a fully rounded nice person at 21. Was awful to me for almost 7 years to be honest.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 14/09/2022 17:14

Mine is 14 and horrible. Really good to know that I'm not the only one struggling. I really started to think if I did something wrong, since personality change was so significant.
Not looking forward for next few years.

SirChenjins · 14/09/2022 17:14

13-16/17 were the worst - DC1 in particular was a bloody nightmare. If you can survive the teenage years you can survive most things, I think.

tigger1001 · 14/09/2022 17:18

Eldest is 16 and there are times my nice boy is back but flashes of arsehole teenager too. Am hopeful that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

But youngest turns 13 in a few weeks and is certainly having "Kevin" moments. He's my calmest and easy going child - going to take max to teenager version'
