So the question is, would you join it? I’m just not very patient and don’t think I could do it!

How can so many be available to do this?

Incredible as this may seem, not everyone works 9-5, Monday to Friday.

And as usual, the army of hi-vis clad worker wasps on conti/rotating shifts are utterly invisible to the pen pushing desk jockeys. Quelle surprise.

i don't work those hours. Still wouldn't be able to do it though!

But as I said, it's not just work - what about childcare? People can't just take their children out of school. And people are queuing overnight, apparently, so being on non 9-5 is irrelevant.

garlictwist · 14/09/2022 12:37

Oh is the coffin closed? I assumed it was open. How do people actually know it's her in there?

AffIt · 14/09/2022 12:38

I think the world is broken into two types of people - those who will happily settle in for days at the drop of a hat, and those for whom ten minutes tests their patience.

(I'm in the latter group.)

And I'm with you!
Queuing at disneyworld.,.part of the holiday and still enjoyable.
Queuing to gawp at a coffin with a flag on it? Incomprehensible.
I suppose it makes a good Facebook post.

Decidualcast · 14/09/2022 12:44

Naaah. Never. It’s ridiculous. Today, I learned of a woman whose breast cancer appointment was scheduled on Monday. It has been postponed for a month. We can’t calculated the costs and inconvenience to people’s lives.

I reckon the second plane that came into Northolt was carrying her actual coffin; this is all an act and she isn’t actually lying in state. That’s my conspiracy theory.

Shpaniel · 14/09/2022 12:49

Hilarious 😂

Headabovetheparakeet · 14/09/2022 12:49

@Decidualcast

What reason would they have for doing that?

Notonyerwelly · 14/09/2022 12:50

I honestly think those who are queuing have lost the plot. Mass hysteria.

CoffeeIsForClosers · 14/09/2022 12:51

I read a book recently about north korea when the dear leader died. It's not vastly different.

Thats a ridiculous thing to say. It absolutely is vastly different. In N. Korea, the authorities held compulsory mourning sessions for the Great Leader, and if your mourning wasn’t considered sorrowful or sincere enough, you were sent to a labour camp to reflect on your shortcomings. As far as I can see the authorities in the UK have been doing their best to dissuade people from coming to London.

Exactly. Seen a few comments the last few days hyperbollocking on about North Korea. In a country where (quite rightly, of course) you are free to ignore the whole thing, and in fact, where you can freely say that you hate the monarchy and everyone in it. Do me a favour.

Back to the mega-queue. I can't imagine joining the back of a FIVE-MILE LONG queue, my God. It would be hell for me. But everyone there (except any unfortunate kids who've been dragged along) wants to be there, so good luck to them.

Shpaniel · 14/09/2022 12:51

Does anyone know anyone queuing? What are the logistics of going to the loo if it’s gonna be a 24h+ marathon wait?

TokyoSushi · 14/09/2022 12:53

I'm still hoping to join the queue! I have to travel quite a long way to get to it though so I'm going to monitor it for a couple of days before deciding.

Shpaniel · 14/09/2022 12:53

@CoffeeIsForClosers

”hyperbollocking” love it. I’m stealing that 😀

There are portaloos along the queue route and also some museums etc. are staying open for people to use their facilities.

Shpaniel · 14/09/2022 12:55

I mean I know we can form an orderly queue in this country but should there not be some sort of timed entry or something so it’s not FIVE MILES LONG!? Maybe they’re already doing that.

User642986540 · 14/09/2022 12:55

You could always do your own queue at home round the telly showing the live stream.

I think there's a Viz 'Top Tip' lurking in your post!

Ooh I like that idea. Recreate the queue in the living room. Or stand outside in the rain for an hour or two then file past the tv at the end.

Thesearmsofmine · 14/09/2022 13:27

They want the long queues, if they did something sensible like time slots then it wouldn’t make for very interesting film and photographs which will be shown around the world or for future generations to look back and marvel at how everyone in the U.K. must love the RF. I am not a conspiracy type but it all feels very purposeful.

The more I think about it the more I think you are right. this is for the history books isn't it? They could have said 'no more flowers', they could have done timed slots for the coffin viewing but that doesn't look so good does it?

FannyCann · 14/09/2022 13:30

I honestly think some people see it as 'a day out' - probably some of the same people who hang around A&E with a small cut etc

Funnily enough I was at A&E recently for a small cut but I knew it would need tetanus and antibiotics so I had to go. Walked in around 11pm and heard someone say she'd been waiting ten hours. 😱
Waited two hours to see the triage nurse who told me I needed tetanus and antibiotics 🙄 and the wait would be at least seven hours. I worked out my local minor injury unit opened at 8:30 am and elected to go home and get some sleep before attending minor injuries in the morning. I believe the hospital has actively chosen the most uncomfortable chairs possible for "reasons". A hard, rigid L but ever so slightly tipping forward, no slumping remotely possible.

I can't imagine queuing 30 hours - and what happens if you are done at 2am with no tubes or trains running, where would one go until everything opens up again?

DD saw someone in the news last night who had managed to go round five times in Edinburgh. Not just mad but selfish too, adding to the queue for everyone else.

the80sweregreat · 14/09/2022 13:35

The resilience they are showing is heartwarming, but I couldn't do this. I'm glad it's not 40 degrees as that would be more problematic, but the rain will also be a hindrance too. At least it's not totally freezing cold.
It seems well organized. Bringing people together. I just hope they will all be ok.

That's quite theme park- esque isn't it? Like getting straight back in the queue for the log flume as soon as you get off!
