So the question is, would you join it? I’m just not very patient and don’t think I could do it!

It's absolutely bonkers! I can't think who in their right mind would be prepared to do this - is it just for bragging rights or something?

I'm so sick of all the sneering now. Let people alone. The history books will read "the queue to see the Queen's coffin stretched for 5 miles", not "Donna from Hounslow couldn't be arsed and thought they were all dipshits".

I agree there’s no point in sneering

I find it somewhat fascinating and I’m kind of impressed in a way. No chair, blanket and for days

dreamingbohemian · 14/09/2022 11:02

If the queue moves along nicely then it's actually a nice walk along South Bank

I struggle to believe it will go past Tower Bridge though, people will give up

Ontopofthesunset · 14/09/2022 11:04

It's extraordinary to me. People queuing saying stuff like 'I can't miss my chance to see the queen'. Hate to break it to you that you're not going to see anything except a flag and a coffin. There's another thread saying it's not child friendly. Why on earth would you want to take your children to see a coffin of someone they've never met?

Thesearmsofmine · 14/09/2022 11:06

Absolutely ridiculous.

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/09/2022 11:06

Lots of the people BBC Breakfast were speaking to were there for the procession of the coffin from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall. I raised an eyebrow at a young man who said he was American who seemed to be treating going to the lying in state as another London tourist attraction.

Plexie · 14/09/2022 11:09

4.5 miles is the maximum length of the queue if it's at full capacity. You find the end of the queue and then join it wherever that is. You don't start in Bermondsey and walk 4.5 miles.

How to get to the queue
To visit the Lying-in-State, you need to join the back of the queue. The location of the back of the queue will move depending on how many people are queuing.
Before you travel, check the current location of the back of the queue.
Check DCMS social media channels for the latest updates on estimated queuing times and the location of the back of the queue

mewkins · 14/09/2022 11:09

You have to wonder why they couldn't have sorted out an online system where you get a time slot. Surely it would have been more sensible that people standing there for days. I queued at Wembley a few weeks ago... four hours and that was my limit!

Comedycook · 14/09/2022 11:10

I'm surprised they haven't made it mandatory to go...then we could really get the north Korea experience.

This is precisely my issue with the whole thing. It is a circus. Another tourist attraction to come and see. Another picture to put on social media.

Most people 'don't have time' to give up five minutes to help someone else in genuine need but can mysteriously free up 30 hours at short notice to stand and wait to see a dead monarch.

At least after those four hours you get a concert. Sometimes a 6 hour one!

Fluffygreenslippers · 14/09/2022 11:18

I physically couldn’t, I’m still wrecked from pregnancy & birth. And how many hours would it take? I guessed 3, but some people are saying 30?! My bladder alone wouldn't stand for. I had to go to a big stadium for my covid jabs and queue for 2 or 3 hours. I was exhausted by the end of it and I was fitter and lighter.
I am hugely into history & I would love to see the Queen’s coffin.

stopitleaveitgetdown · 14/09/2022 11:19

I have found myself rolling my eyes at the people who are sleeping on the street under a plastic bag in the rain and queuing for close to 30 hours. to be a part of this. It's absolutely ridiculous in my eyes.
And people flying over from Virginia when they heard the news. Like really?!

DGMW I am sad the Queen has passed and I feel for the family but this spectacle is quite bizarre and over the top

Watch it on the TV in the warm dry comfort of your own home and clean toilets

stopitleaveitgetdown · 14/09/2022 11:20

@Comedycook my thoughts exactly. Also some kids are out of school and standing there. Wonder if it's an unauthorised absence lol

Crikeyalmighty · 14/09/2022 11:20

I honestly think some people see it as 'a day out' - probably some of the same people who hang around A&E with a small cut etc

I didn't dislike the Queen at all and think she did a stoic job, but queuing 5 miles to walk past a square box is batshit

watcherintherye · 14/09/2022 11:25

I read a book recently about north korea when the dear leader died. It's not vastly different.

Thats a ridiculous thing to say. It absolutely is vastly different. In N. Korea, the authorities held compulsory mourning sessions for the Great Leader, and if your mourning wasn’t considered sorrowful or sincere enough, you were sent to a labour camp to reflect on your shortcomings. As far as I can see the authorities in the UK have been doing their best to dissuade people from coming to London.

MarshaMelrose · 14/09/2022 11:25

It's just seemed so serf like.

Considering a serf had no autonomy and these people are doing this purely of their own free will, in no way is this serf like.

ginghamstarfish · 14/09/2022 11:27

I can't help but think for many people, sadly, this and many other similar events in recent days are just something to boast about on SM. Shame really as there are many older non-SM types who won't be able to go and pay their respects as they won't be up to the queuing.

dottiedodah · 14/09/2022 11:29

Personally each to their own! I could think of nothing worse! Cant stand for long periods anyway as sore ankles.I would have thought an online request for tickets first come first served basis would be better .

What does it mean that nobody does a queue like the British? Erm people in plenty of other countries queue as well! What a weird thing to be jingoistic about.

TeenDivided · 14/09/2022 11:31

People will queue (or would before fast passes) for 2 hours for a Disney ride which is nothing special at all. Similarly people used to queue overnight for Christmas sales, or Wimbledon finals tickets.

There's a terrible attitude of 'I'm so much better than those idiots who are choosing to <insert royal mourning event here>' from some posters on MN at the moment.

RestingMurderousFace · 14/09/2022 11:32

Some people are incredibly odd aren’t they.

EndTheMonacyNow · 14/09/2022 11:34

It's very odd indeed.

At least there's a bit more two it than a two second shuffle past a closed casket.

IHateWasps · 14/09/2022 11:35

To it ffs.
