Price increases: What food that you bought every week have you now completely stopped buying?

I just noticed today that the 250g block of own-brand butter in Tesco has gone up again to £1.99, and this is price matched to Aldi who I assume have also put it up. Think I'll now unfortunately not be buying it at all and switching to cheap spread!

Nothing. I just shop as normal. I don't actually buy butter as I don't really eat it.

Walkers crisps they have gone up from the always on offer price £1 to £1.75 in some supermarkets.
Hardly ever see the larger packs, which aren’t that much cheaper.

Just chicken breasts so far. Now I buy them just for the kids and a tin of chickpeas for me and dh instead. I don't want to buy battery farmed.

I’ve always shopped like @helpmedate it’s the right way to do it. I haven’t stopped buying anything, I continue to throw in the freezer what’s got a yellow sticker, or is cheap and cheerful like lambs liver and chicken portions over breast and make dishes around the ingredients I have. We Buy and eat lots of veg, and I freeze leftovers for lunch. I hate waste. If I want salmon, I’ll buy it, but it will be farm price salmon or off cuts and I make lasagne or fish pie.

my concession was to buy an AirFryer yesterday, rather than stick the oven on for small meals. Used it twice, first time meh, second time I was delighted 😁.

This all makes me so sad. And angry. Life is for living. We shouldn't have to constantly think about the price of butter and loo rolls. Or having salmon or steaks so rarely. Angry

I'm trying not to be goady, but you're talking about butter, steak, salmon etc. Not everyday stuff for everyone!!
I can't afford gluten free bread now. So I go without or get ill with normal bread

We had to cut out snacks for our movie nights every Friday. :(

And crisps, I mean, you don't need them to survive do you?

Free range chicken - now at least £5 for two small breasts. It makes me sad that it's at such a premium when it should be the norm to buy meat from free range animals. As a result, we are pretty much going veggie as I hate the idea of supporting battery farms.

this is so thoughtful

I agree with this. I don't think it all is just price increases. I think some of it is profiteering.

I'm thinking about buying cereal for the mornings because porridge and toast both use energy and shredded wheat or bran flakes etc wouldn't. Massive drop in nutritional benefit from porridge to cereal, cereal is one of the crappiest foods you can buy so I'd have oats with milk.

We are just trying to eat the cheaper things in our repertoire but as we are vegetarian none of our base ingredients are very expensive. Butter and eggs are both noticeably higher so we are using less of those.

We don’t eat meat but like fish. Fresh tuna at £42 a kilo last week 😳😳😳 double from previously.

You're missing the point, when living standards fall quickly and noticeably it is a negative thing. There are people struggling to buy enough to live and also there are people just noticing how expensive their own shopping basket has become.

@ScamelaAnderson

We aren't talking about just survival. this thread isn't about just survival. we appreciate that there are people on the poverty line or really struggling. that is not what this is about. it's about normal people eating normally and then having a treat of salmon or steak and now not being able to. yeah no-one needs crisps but lots of people do like them and that's part of living.

Fresh fish, and frozen/fresh prawns unless there's an offer on. Certain fresh fruit e.g. nectarines... 67p each and almost always not nice enough to justify the price! Decent loo roll. Things I've continued to buy but need to try to find an alternative include most cleaning products e.g. bleach spray.

Steak
Roast beef cut
5% fat mince, I now buy pork or pork and beef mixed
I love tinned fruit, used to buy tinned mandarins and eat a tin a day, they've gone from around 40p to over a £1 and most of the time they are sold out

Roast dinners. Always had one every Sunday, except if the weather was really hot. Now do it once a month, and it’s chicken or pork because I can’t justify beef or lamb.

It actually makes me genuinely sad - there are only 3 of us here, but I always made a plate for our elderly neighbour as well. Plus the leftovers made Monday night soup with crusty bread. I still try to make something neighbour friendly (stews etc as he doesn’t really do pasta or rice dishes) but I still feel like I’m letting him down - I’ve been doing it for years 😰

I know whole chickens have gone up, but I still find them one of the most economical meals. We've got pretty hearty appetites but a large chicken can do all of us for two meals. I know that reeks of the whole typical "Mumsnet chicken" claims, but I find them so easy to cook and so cost-effective.

Last week - for the first time ever!! - I made a broth with the carcass and leftover veg. I was so proud of myself for being thrifty and it was really filling so I'm definitely going to do that again.

Conversely, I got a beef joint out of the freezer yesterday. It had been buried so was actually from Christmas. It was £6 per kg in December - the exact same type of beef joint is now £12 per kg. It has DOUBLED in price!!!!! I'm not paying £24 for something that cost me £12 less than a year ago!!

Gluten free bread. Already stupidly expensive, it disappeared off the shelves for a fortnight and now it's back, but gone up 30p to just under £4 a loaf.

At this rate I'll be on a turnip and a potato a day.

It's so awful. We spend every summer in Germany and the price rises there are no where nearly as much as here. So many things have gone up, we have gone veggie almost and that has helped dramatically. Lentils and beans are more but cost so much less it isn't painful

Heinz Macaroni cheese was a handy lunch but has doubled in price so is no longer worth it.

My vitamins have gone from £5 for a month to over £7.

This

Supermarket profits have literally doubled this year. The blatant profiteering needs to stop.

Graze snacks
Billtong
Mainly, all snacks that my DD loves! Including the little packages with cheese, crackers and ham.
I am telling her, buy the ingredients and make her own.
Fresh meat and fish. We have gone frozen, cheaper versions.
Refrigerated orange juice. I just tried the cheap Asda version, yellow, and it is not bad. I still like Aldi's one better.
Possibly steaks. We only have one meat eater in the house, so every now and then I will get her a treat.
Vegetarian things are going up too, but they tend to have 2 items for a reduced price, so we stock up then.
We are also batch cooking and freezing our own cooked meals. If I use the oven, I fill two or three trays with stuff to cook. Then add spices and other ingredients and freeze.
No more frozen or cold pizzas, it looks like. They have gone up in price. We just made our own this weekend.
