Price increases: What food that you bought every week have you now completely stopped buying?

I just noticed today that the 250g block of own-brand butter in Tesco has gone up again to £1.99, and this is price matched to Aldi who I assume have also put it up. Think I'll now unfortunately not be buying it at all and switching to cheap spread!

Philadelphia. Used to be about a quid. 2.20 now. Own brand stuff doesn't come with all the different flavours and isn't as nice. It was own/cheap brand all the way until I was about 25. Didn't think I'd be going back to it.

Not an every day purchase, but tins of paint in b&m have gone up by 3 quid. Same paint, same shelf, so why the increase?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/09/2022 22:15

Meat and fish. It's not that I can't afford it but I just find myself standing looking at the price and thinking "No, fuck that, we'll have an omelette instead".

AuraBora · 11/09/2022 22:15

Nescafe Azuro coffee- really love this stuff and it was always on offer somewhere (usually Tesco or sometimes Waitrose where I am) however now it's never on offer and is ridiculously expensive. I'm struggling to find nice instant coffee at a reasonable price now.. has gone up massively!

Yes. Never paid more than 3 quid for a tin of it; now it's 5 or 6 quid.

Co -op's prices have been ridiculous for years .

The head of food retail for them was paid £1.4 million last year but that division loses money. Lot of teabags need to be sold to cover that wage.

countdowntonap · 11/09/2022 22:18

Boxes of mixed salad - now buy the lettuce, peppers, etc separate from Aldi and it costs much less across the week.

CaptaNoctem · 11/09/2022 22:18

Fish. I stood looking at the display and said no. I’m not paying that

Slartibartfast42 · 11/09/2022 22:19

Pringles

Glitteringapples · 11/09/2022 22:19

Scallops - DH and I didn’t have them every week more like a once a fortnight treat when they were in season with lardons and samphire. There’s no way we can fit it into the budget now sadly.

Pringles

Yes and even the aldi knock off version have hit a price I won't pay, think they were £1.29 on Friday, I started buying them when they were 69p

Grumpybutfunny · 11/09/2022 22:24

We gave up supermarket meat years ago, we have free range meat as a treat now and eat largely veggi. We have recently started looking at the value ranges so things like wonky strawberries and carrots, frozen veg and buying larger bags of things we know we will use like pasta. We have saved a small fortune however the expiry does seem to be shorter.

Refused to buy Coke Zero the other day at £2 a bottle.

StarDolphins · 11/09/2022 22:26

Everything is dearer but I’m noticing with EVERYTHING there’s also less in the pack - beans now 410g, 120mls less in laundry gel etc, garlics that are the size of grapes. Fed up of prices going up for way less.

But anyway, back to the point..I used to have salmon twice a week & now I have sardines & the only meat I buy is organic mince & I now split the small pack into 2 instead of using it all & pack it out with lentils/chickpeas - hardly even notice now in chilli.

lechatnoir · 11/09/2022 22:29

Smoked Salmon - even the most basic one is now £4/5 a pack so only ever buy it if it's on offer. Meat generally is so much more - our regular roast won't be so regular and will be looking at more stews and slow cooker meals

For toilet roll, try Groupon - 45 rolls about £13/14 (although appreciate you'll need storage for this many!)

VeronicaFranklin · 11/09/2022 22:31

Whole Chicken
Tinned Salmon
Stewing steak
Coffee
Crisps
generally most food items in the supermarket have increased...

I buy my dad scones from Morrisons his favourite, before Xmas they used to be 90p for 4...then £1... and now they are £1.25

Washing powder has gone up

Dalaidramailama · 11/09/2022 22:32

Crisps. I love them but can’t justify the price now. Guess I can do without.

coronafiona · 11/09/2022 22:35

Diet Coke. I now buy aldi own brand and it's fine, £1.29 for 6 cans vs £4.50 for branded.

AgnesNaismith · 11/09/2022 22:35

Lamb - a leg of lamb is now around £30 where before it was £15

ShinyPikachu · 11/09/2022 22:36

Farmfoods do 2 x 225g butter for £3.20 so I buy that but we have cheap spread too so the butter is kept for things we prefer it on.

Cynderella · 11/09/2022 22:37

helpmedate · 11/09/2022 21:37

Meat and fish. I've found myself thinking more about alternatives and cheaper versions, depending on what I'm doing with things. So things like chicken drumsticks and thighs, smoked salmon scraps and ham offcuts to cook with. Liver and onions, very cheap and nutritious. Frozen is often better value than fresh for fish. Adding a handful of lentils to a stew or curry. Buying whatever is on offer or yellow stickered and creating meals around it. Tbh I don't feel deprived and think I will carry on like this even when things get easier and feel I have wasted a lot of money in the past.

Years ago, we went through some periods of being poorer than we are now, and a lot of the habits I picked up then have stayed. Basic loaf in breadmaker every day (or two now), no meat and fish only occasionally. Salads bulked with croutons made with stale crusts, leftover chilli topped with mash next day ... cheapest loo rolls, home made cleaning sprays.

But we have always had 'proper' butter, olive oil and balsamic, plenty of veg even if only carrots, onions and swede and occasional treats. In the last few years, we've spent more on food, but on things like more wine, strawberries and raspberries every week in the summer, bags of rocket to go in salads, that nice black Kale (name escapes me) instead of cabbage ... more eating out, takeaways.

If I have to cut back (and I think I shall), I don't think I'll be eating any worse.

MintJulia · 11/09/2022 22:42

I haven't stopped buying anything because of price rises, but instead, I buy all my cleaning products and loo roll in the £shop, and I've downgraded my coffee to supermarket own brand, which I buy in catering packs. It halves the cost.

Has anyone tried making their own butter? It’s so cheap. Just buy some double cream

I'm going to give this a go in theory the butter will be nearly half price and I'll make some scones with the buttermilk. Do you think double cream or extra thick double cream?

Adversity · 11/09/2022 23:01

No more salmon and smoked salmon every week.

Just double cream - there was a series on earlier this year when people went to live Amish style, and they all walked around shaking their jar of cream until they got butter.

BrutusMcDogface · 11/09/2022 23:08

A lot of these are slightly amusing to me: “no more fillet steak” 🤣 🙊

I mean, it’s not that funny when there will be people choosing between heating and eating but there you go.

We shop at Tesco, with top ups at Lidl, and with the club card, not much has really jumped out at me price wise. However, I did notice cathedral city cheddar has gone up and wasn’t on offer anymore (usually that or pilgrims choice is on offer and I choose whichever is cheapest).

BrutusMcDogface · 11/09/2022 23:10

I did go and buy some underwear essentials earlier for the kids from sainsburys, and was horrified to pay £75!! Primark it is, from now on.
