Price increases: What food that you bought every week have you now completely stopped buying?

I just noticed today that the 250g block of own-brand butter in Tesco has gone up again to £1.99, and this is price matched to Aldi who I assume have also put it up. Think I'll now unfortunately not be buying it at all and switching to cheap spread!

Aldi 4 pint milk has just gone up again to £1.55. No doubt the price at Tesco and all the other supermarkets that price match will be going up imminently.

Looks like I'll be putting less milk on my cereal!

Asda brand fresh pizza, fajita chicken flavour is now £3.25! It used to be £1.50 not that long ago! Its nice enough, but nothing special so i will never buy it again at that price.
Their own brand pesto is also £1 now, swear it used to be half the price.

Magnums are shocking!

Iceland Majestics are good too.

I’m partial to a magnum but the prices are ridiculous. On the back of this suggestion I made a special trip to buy the Iceland Majestics.
They are shockingly bad.
I’d rather do without an icecream than eat one of these again.

What! How can you say that!

Okay, I also recently bought the M&S version (3 for one pound something, we had the mint flavour). They were definitely nice, you should try those!

ProlificInProfanity · 23/09/2022 21:44

Sorry!
I will happily try the M&S ones next time I’m near one.
I know the mini Aldi ones are lovely but ours is a bit of a trek to get to.

Yellowflower123 · 09/11/2022 21:36

Shocked by the price of own brand frozen Sweetcorn in asda today. I'm suuuuure I bought it for around 80p not long ago. £1.60 today!!!!!!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 10/11/2022 00:47

I'm finding that many staples are cheaper in M&S plus around 5pm the yellow stickered stuff.

Although a little more expensive we've swapped over to seeded bread as it's more filling & the shelf life is longer.

I've worked out the codes on the M&S fruit & veg with no best before dates. Someone mentioned it on another thread or maybe it was this this one.
Off the top off my head I can't remember but next time I get something in M&S I'll show you how to do it.
I think it was something along the lines of the week no & month number but like I said I'll have to check.

One thing that I've found that has reduced in price is Sainsburys Cava Brut it was £6 now it's £5.75 & tastes as good if not better than the more expensive versions & even better than some French Champagnes,
But then Cava is Spanish Champagne but obviously not allowed to call itself Champagne due to Champagne being a protected word & product from the Champagne area of France even though I think Cava is made in the same way with the same grapes.

I had stopped with ecover products, so expensive - but f* it I've gone back. I miss the lovely laundry smell and the other products I've been using haven't been as good.

We use ecover but buy the 5litre bottles which work out alot cheaper and alot less plastic waste. Even better if you can get them on offer, they were on 3 for 2 on ocado a while back so I stocked up! We also use the big empty bottles for rinsing feet at the beach etc. We always water down fabric conditioner half and half and it seems fine

Anyfeckinusername · 10/11/2022 19:46

yes it does tend to go on offer - I’ve held off buying at full price. Will look into the large refill bottles 👍

Smogtopia · 10/11/2022 19:50

No more fabric conditioner, fresh fruit juices, expensive shampoo and conditioner , nuts.
I don't really miss any of the above but cutting them out has saved about £20 per shop

theblackradiator · 10/11/2022 19:53

shows how working class I am 🤣 but has anybody else said Heinz tins of beans&sausage yet? we used to love a tin on toast as a simple cheap lunch. last time I looked they had shot up to £1.70 per tin and they've probably gone up in price again since then so we no longer buy them.

DarkKarmaIlama · 10/11/2022 19:55

@theblackradiator

Also WC and man I love a can of Heinz beans and sausages 😂.

We have found the cheap Tesco ones a really good substitute and I am a bean snob 😉.

TurquoiseBeach · 10/11/2022 20:11

Babybels unless on offer.

shoobydoobybop · 10/11/2022 20:13

We're not big on brand names but Yorkshire Tea was a must have. Switched to Aldi Red Label teabags on this week's shop and gotta say I'm very impressed.

theblackradiator · 10/11/2022 20:16

@DarkKarmaIlama yes I can be a bit of a bean snob too lol and I definitely cannot fool the kids with a different brand they don't miss a trick! but I do need to find a cheaper alternative so il give them a go thanks for the suggestion. you'd think the big brands would be taking huge sales losses with so many people switching to cheaper alternatives and they'd lower prices or have special offers etc to try and win customers back.

Decafflatteplease · 10/11/2022 20:30

Re beans we actually prefer Aldi beans and sausage to Heinz and you get alot of sausages per tin!

DarkKarmaIlama · 10/11/2022 20:30

@shoobydoobybop

Do you mean aldi gold label? They’re stronger than the red label (I too have swapped from Yorkshire tea).

@theblackradiator

I tried the aldi cheap beans and I didn’t like them, neither did the kids. They genuinely can’t tell though with the cheap Tesco ones (as in the really cheap ones not the mid range) so definitely worth a shot.

Poke · 10/11/2022 20:33

Supermarket instant coffee. Either sainsbury’s or Tesco. It’s not that bad. Or am I kidding myself?
Used to drink Dowe Egberts.

BlackeyedGruesome · 10/11/2022 20:37

Orange juice. It was my treat.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 10/11/2022 21:43

I remember a thread a few years back when we were commenting on how food prices were falling, yet here we are now.
It's just awful.

BlackForestCake · 10/11/2022 22:51

I regularly need to use Mr Muscle Unblocker and would love a cheaper alternative!

Caustic soda. You need to be very careful with it (wear gloves and if possible eye protection too) but it’s cheap as chips and keeps drains clear better than anything else.

mum2jakie · 10/11/2022 22:57

Have switched from using olive oil to sunflower oil. Also using block butter rather than spreadable butter now that it is so expensive. Have invested in an old style butter dish to keep the block butter spreadable.

shoobydoobybop · 11/11/2022 00:04

@DarkKarmaIlama I went with red label but thanks I'll certainly have a look at the gold label next time.

mum2jakie · 11/11/2022 20:46

I've also downgraded to own brand kitchen roll as the premium stuff was priced like gold! This week I've switched to Sainsbury's own brand crumpets rather than Warburton's. Will try them for breakfast together...
