Things I'm embarrassed to have realised so late in life...

Those ID necklaces? I had absolutely never heard of the word "lanyard" until around 3 years ago. All my friend's children learnt this way before I did. If you had told me "Lanyard" was a European city - I'd have believed you.

That little press send arrow in the top right hand corner? It only occurred to me in my mid 30s that it is in fact a paper aeroplane. I just thought it was a dodgy triangle.

I was absolutely stunned to find out the woman who plays Amanda in Motherland is not Catherine Tate.

Any confessions to console me I'm not the only one failing at life?! 😃

I thought the world was black and white when seeing black and white photos from years ago

In the rhyme, it never mentions that Humpty Dumpty was an egg.

Wow
Now singing Humpty Dumpty to check

EntertainingandFactual · 11/09/2022 22:10

I thought the era from 1901- 2000 was just called the 20th century 😬
I’m quite aware of the Victorian, Georgian eras… Have we just come out if another Elizabethan era?
(I’m a bit thick…)

KingstonLane · 11/09/2022 22:12

That this sign says Wall’s.

I always read it as ‘Libby’s’ ....😆😳

I was 24 before I realised "albeit" was said "all be it". I had been saying "al-bite" (like it was pronounced like a German word Blush

Really? I’ve always thought it was ‘al-bite’ 🤦🏼‍♀️ Oh dear!

That ‘Bluey’ is a girl 🤯

My daughter an I were gobsmacked at this 😂 they are sisters 😂

I thought that Pontefract was in Wales until last week. 🫣

I thought so too until I read your post - I'm 69 ... 🤔

squirrelnutkins1 · 11/09/2022 22:16

@Blossomandbee I thought it was Rodney too!

transformandriseup · 11/09/2022 22:18

I thought Cavalier King Charles spaniels were so called because they looked like King Charles (a previous one!) with floppy hair/ears not because he had some 🤣

What!! I clearly thought this too 🤦‍♀️ King Charles I had long wavy hair like the dogs' ears.

bawsy · 11/09/2022 22:18

My family took the piss out of me yesterday.

My DD asked what ER stood for when watching the proclamation of the new king. I was like 'yeah it's Elizabeth Royal'.

Every pair of eyes in the room turned to me and was like 'Eh, no it's not'.

I'm 39 Blush

Loveduvetdays · 11/09/2022 22:19

I once asked what the dog was called in Scooby Doo 😂 I haven't lived it down!!!!

Isn't it?

It should be.

noodlezoodle · 11/09/2022 22:20

I'm another person who mispronounced 'albeit' for years. Same for awry, which I was very disappointed to find out wasn't pronounced 'awe-ree' (which I still think is nicer). Apparently if you read a lot as a child it's really common to mispronounce words you've seen but not heard.

I only found out this year how absolutely fucking massive a moose is. I thought they were the same size as a horse or deer, but NOPE - when you see a picture of them next to a car it's very alarming.

Umanresources · 11/09/2022 22:21

I always thought that Andy Pandy was a girl, until quite recently. I was telling my hairdresser and it was news to him as well.

MonkeypuzzleClimber · 11/09/2022 22:22

I thought Arcansaw and Arkansas were different places. It was only when I was actually across the river in Mississippi that I discovered that’s how Arkansas is pronounced.

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/09/2022 22:22

@ReneBumsWombats WAIT! Jesus' surname isn't Christ? What is it??

Oxbridge is not another university, like I thought it was for an embarrassingly long time. Though when my kids were applying to uni I did then always ask if they were going to apply to Oxford, Cambridge and Oxbridge. Own that mistake! Grin

I was a bit confused when I started sixth form when my teachers said I should apply to Oxbridge, as I’d never heard of the place. It was a while before I realised. Makes me quite cross actually, it was a working class town several decades ago, no one talked to us about university until the sixth form, the teachers should have realised we wouldn’t know. It’s the kind of thing that makes you think those universities aren’t for you.

I've recently realised that if I empty the bottom drawer of the dishwasher first then any pools of water left on glasses on the top rack don't drip onto the plates below. I've had a dishwasher for about 20 years.

I absolutely love this. It's so how I operate - blind to what's obvious to everyone else!

Lysianthus · 11/09/2022 22:23

Rockhoppperd · 11/09/2022 22:02

That there have been two different President Bushes - genuinely hadn’t realised it wasn’t the same person until very recently

Easy mistake! Both thick as and oddly appropriate for them to appear on this thread!

PRosie · 11/09/2022 22:24

Hope it hasn't been said before and I'm not on to cause an argument but Hillsborough is a most beautiful place in NORTHERN Ireland, which is part of the UK.

mnahmnah · 11/09/2022 22:24

@overthinkersanonnymus

Nobody had surnames 2000 years ago! He was Jesus ‘of Nazareth’. Christ is a title attributed to him, not his name.

PRosie · 11/09/2022 22:25

Sorry I forgot the name was changed to Royal Hillsborough!

guerillastyle · 11/09/2022 22:26

I never realised swans could fly until a few years ago when they weren't at their 'usual spot' at the pond in the local park and I asked my OH if he thought they had all walked to another park.

LittleBiscuits · 11/09/2022 22:26

That Buffalo Wings aren't from buffalo...
