Things I'm embarrassed to have realised so late in life...

Those ID necklaces? I had absolutely never heard of the word "lanyard" until around 3 years ago. All my friend's children learnt this way before I did. If you had told me "Lanyard" was a European city - I'd have believed you.

That little press send arrow in the top right hand corner? It only occurred to me in my mid 30s that it is in fact a paper aeroplane. I just thought it was a dodgy triangle.

I was absolutely stunned to find out the woman who plays Amanda in Motherland is not Catherine Tate.

Any confessions to console me I'm not the only one failing at life?! 😃

No it's in Caerphilly, a family member used to live there.

There’s a Pontypandy Lane? Looks like a small suburb. Not the village as portrayed in Fireman Sam.

All these posts on a “I thought this all my life” thread and nobody has yet said they thought Center Parcs was all under a huge dome

Umanresources · 11/09/2022 21:43

My mum thought that Surbiton was a made up place in The Good Life, like Weatherfield in Coronation Street, until she met my OH when she was in her 70s.

She also thought that men had only one working testicle, the other was for balance. We had a friend who had one removed because of cancer and we were falling about laughing when he started walking round in circles, because he wasn’t balanced!

My kids found it hysterical that I thought Lapland was a country..

It's not a country?? 🤯

Hadenough201 · 11/09/2022 21:44

That Portsmouth is an island !

Threelittlelambs · 11/09/2022 21:45

I thought freshets flu was code for STD having gained their freedom and moving away from home.

Someone did say that it was only the pool that was under the dome. But seriously who the hell would actually think the whole entire place was under a dome? The logistics of that is just 🤯🤦🏼‍♀️

Impostacoffee · 11/09/2022 21:47

I don’t why but well into my 20’s I thought biscuits was spelt bisquits. I’ve no idea where I picked that up from but it still makes me chuckle thinking how many times I spelt it that way & I was about 19 when I realised it was doo-vey not duvet 😬

That Portsmouth is an island !

What? No.. it can't be?

flapjackfairy · 11/09/2022 21:48

@ sellthesizzle.
No it is a region covering the top area of Norway Sweden and Finland and I think parts of Russia. Hence you get Finnish lapland, Swdish lapland etc.. So it does exist but not a separate country in it's own right.

flapjackfairy · 11/09/2022 21:50

@sellthesizzle
But it is just as you imagine it to be . A v magical.place . I am.lucky enough to have been a few times and it is amazing.

QueenCarrot · 11/09/2022 21:50

@incywincyspidery

one of the common names of oilseed rape is field mustard

OldFan · 11/09/2022 21:51

Sexual morals. Took me until about 43. Thanks Mumsnet.

Umanresources · 11/09/2022 21:52

I really have no idea. The first time she said it we just didn’t disillusion her. My son, aged 10 explained menstruation to her after he’d learned about it at school.

pheonixrebirth · 11/09/2022 21:55

When I first joined MN I wasn't quite sure what all the abbreviations were at first but muddled through thinking I had got the gist of it all until one day someone put in brackets the full words of an abbreviation.

For a good year or so I was reading OLD thinking it was an actual dating site for older people and that was its name like bumble or plenty of fish. Even more I remember thinking well good for them. 😱

I didn't realise wolverines were real until a few years ago and still googled to double check before posting this

🤯 I thought they were fictional giant wolves

Aussiegirl123456 · 11/09/2022 21:56

That this Elon Musk that everyone was speaking of was a human, not a perfume. (Few years ago now before he became a household name).

Hadenough201 · 11/09/2022 22:00

yep ! The worse thing is my husband came from Portsmouth so have visited many times and only realised when he told me !

Wait…. WHAT????

ememem84 · 11/09/2022 22:01

I also didn’t realise Gothenburg and Gotham City are two very different places.

I had some clients who had flown into London who were from Gothenburg. My first time meeting them. Asked where they were from then said “oh like Batman”

Wow...!!! I really didn't know this

Rockhoppperd · 11/09/2022 22:02

That there have been two different President Bushes - genuinely hadn’t realised it wasn’t the same person until very recently

@incywincyspidery rapeseed is in the family Brassicaceae which includes mustards so he’s not 100% wrong.

So if he had said broccoli he would also be not wrong? 😂

WrongWayApricot · 11/09/2022 22:04

The men in black song isn't original. And then realising why they chose to sample the song.
