Things I'm embarrassed to have realised so late in life...

Those ID necklaces? I had absolutely never heard of the word "lanyard" until around 3 years ago. All my friend's children learnt this way before I did. If you had told me "Lanyard" was a European city - I'd have believed you.

That little press send arrow in the top right hand corner? It only occurred to me in my mid 30s that it is in fact a paper aeroplane. I just thought it was a dodgy triangle.

I was absolutely stunned to find out the woman who plays Amanda in Motherland is not Catherine Tate.

Any confessions to console me I'm not the only one failing at life?! 😃

I'm not into horse-racing - in fact I loathe it.
But my father used to have the odd "flutter", and for years I thought an "each way" bet meant that the horses ran the race, then turned round and raced the same way back.........🙄

My Mother thought that the horse Bar ran in every race. When the odds were shown on TV there would be the odds on the top horses then something like 20-1 Bar, it meant all the rest were 20-1 bar those named!

At 74 I have recently come to realise why the indicator on the dashboard showing the miles I can drive on the fuel in the tank changes, it sometimes goes up! It's influenced by how I'm driving, not just on how much fuel I have.

My one.

was at our local zoo the other day with my parents and my kids.

saw a fuzzy thing that looked like a meercat. It wasn’t a meercat but a mongoose. I hadn’t read the sign and said “ooh look what’s that thing?” My dad told me it was a mongoose. Apparently I looked confused.

I had to admit to him that I though mongooses were birds. Because goose. He just looked at me like I was a right disappointment. Like “oh god she’s a thicky”

in my denense I knew mongooses were quite bitey and knew they went after snakes and such. Just thought because gooses were also a bit arsey they were birds. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Absolutely ashamed of this one, but at the ripe old age of 30, I realised Arkansas is not pronounced Ar-kan-sas and is in fact Ar-can-saw.

Cailleachian · 11/09/2022 20:15

A few days ago.

That saying "see you next Tuesday" is very rude.

I thought that when they said in Parliament eyes to the right and nose to the left. That the MPs had to turn their heads like point their eyes one to the left and tip your nose to the right.

Didn't realise there was separate gates to go through and it was indeed ayes as in yes to the right and Nos as in disagreemen to go through the other gate.

When parking and it says no return for 2 hours, I used to think you couldn't go back to your car for 2 hours 😂 I only realised it meant you couldn't park again within 2 hours after I asked my husband what happens if it rains and I might need to come back for my umbrella 😂

I also thought this, for an embarrassingly long time Blush

I only found out a few years ago that Billericay isn't in Spain!

Ireland isn't it?😊

quietlycontent · 11/09/2022 20:17

My friend was well into her 30s when she found out that commercial aircraft do not have an emergency parachute stored under every seat.

One I read recently and hadn't realised myself (despite being a huge fan) is that the Beatles are the BEATles as in "beat", not the Beetles. Blew my mind that! 😂

OMFG!! I never noticed this before!!

I thought that Pontefract was in Wales until last week. 🫣

I thought the same until a few weeks ago!

One thing I’ve always wondered is why Kansas and Arkansas are pronounced differently?

@flapjackfairy

It is ‘another THING’ coming. You were right originally.

No it's not

It was only when the covid tests came out that I realised the tonsils were not the bit that dangles down!

Me too! And I didn't even realise then until I studied the diagram in the instructions more carefully, after having done quite a few tests....

That cacophony isn't pronounced kaka phonie thanks to reading Slinky Malinky (good friend of Hairy McClary) to the children. DH pissed himself and does like to bring it up occasionally. I'm my defense I've been an avid reader since I was little and have encountered loads of words that I've never heard anyone use in real life!

I say kaka phonie when ready Hairy Maclary, how is it pronounced?

LoveLarry · 11/09/2022 20:24

flapjackfairy · 11/09/2022 18:19

@IcakethereforeIam
What ! Mind blown. Never realised that until now !!

You've not quoted the post, so I have to ask

Is your mind really blown by number plates?

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if someone has already mentioned this. But that broccoli buds are actually tons of flowers that haven't bloomed yet!

Someone I know thought that Kermit the frog's name was "Kermit D. Frog" until her mid twenties

Something I learnt recently on tiktok and had not realised before in the nursery rhyme this little piggy, the one that went to market wasn't shopping 😬

😲
Poor little piggy!

Ex DH - not me !
If you've never heard a word spoken, why wouldn't you call a cagoule a "kaygoolie" ?
Or a whodunit a "wod unit " ?

A trilogy is a triology.

Our daughter ws about 3 when we realised she could read a bit! Driving along the M62 she suddenly cried out 'Look Mummy, goolie!' We realised that she'd read the sign for Goole!
A very strait-laced couple had a daughter about 4, he was waiting with her in the car park while her mother went into somewhere, She suddenly came out with a mouthful of expletives, when asked by a very ashen father where she'd heard words like that 'They're written on that wall over there', they didn't know she could read either!
