Things I'm embarrassed to have realised so late in life...

Those ID necklaces? I had absolutely never heard of the word "lanyard" until around 3 years ago. All my friend's children learnt this way before I did. If you had told me "Lanyard" was a European city - I'd have believed you.

That little press send arrow in the top right hand corner? It only occurred to me in my mid 30s that it is in fact a paper aeroplane. I just thought it was a dodgy triangle.

I was absolutely stunned to find out the woman who plays Amanda in Motherland is not Catherine Tate.

Any confessions to console me I'm not the only one failing at life?! 😃

An awful lot of things that people think are nuts aren't.

Almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, macadamias, pecans, pistachios, pine nuts, walnuts - none of these is botanically a nut.

I mean, these are pretty much all the nuts. So which ones are actually nuts?! Hazelnuts?

Someone I know thought that Kermit the frog's name was "Kermit D. Frog" until her mid twenties

I know someone who thought Jesus' surname was Christ.

Teenyliving · 11/09/2022 20:28

We always went "uptown" when going to central London for a night out.
I always thought "downtown" meant slumming it.

People would always say they were going 'up to London' wherever they lived geographically in old fims.

EL8888 · 11/09/2022 20:30

@Daydreambeliever1175 they sell those type of oat cakes in my local Sainsbury. We live in Essex

That babies eyes don't actually change colour from blue to say brown, rather a brown film starts to cover the blue and the eye underneath remains blue forever.
Which is why often, you see very old people with brown eyes but with blue outer edges.
Fifty some years I spent not knowing this!

This is not really accurate. It’s simply melanin deposition in the iris.

@BellaTheDarkOverlord

Those getting confused with Pontefract being in Wales, maybe getting confused with Pontepridd which is in Wales.

Or Pontypandy which is also in Wales.*

*I assume it is, I have just realised, I don't think I've ever seen an episode that actually verifies this! 😮

This is a joke, yes? Pontypandy is fictional.

PoppyBlunt · 11/09/2022 20:32

That "this little piggy goes to market" is going to be sold and isn't off to do his shopping.

Also that twinkle twinkle, abc and baa baa blsck sheep are all the same tune but with different lyrics.

Elecktra22 · 11/09/2022 20:34

Omg where is it then?

billy1966 · 11/09/2022 20:34

This is both a hilarious, and HUGELY informative thread, at the same time.🤔😳.
Thanks OP.

I mean, these are pretty much all the nuts. So which ones are actually nuts?! Hazelnuts?

Hazel nuts are a nut.

Now... how about the fact that raspberries and blackberries aren't berries? (in botanical terms)
And the difference between a raspberry and a blackberry isn't down to colour?

iknowimcoming · 11/09/2022 20:13

It's not totally self-explanatory is it? Ok right I'm definitely not feeling quite as bad about this now!

But the university challenge split screen thing?! Whaaaaat?!?! Grin

Blankety Blank?

Celebrity Squares?

People would always say they were going 'up to London' wherever they lived geographically in old fims.

The Up line on the railway always goes to London, the Down line always goes away from it. So by train, you always go Up to London. No matter where you start from.

Teenyliving · 11/09/2022 20:36

@PoppyBlunt oh my god. It is the same tune.

OH MY GOD

Hodgepodge211 · 11/09/2022 17:49

I was 24 before I realised "albeit" was said "all be it". I had been saying "al-bite" (like it was pronounced like a German word Blush

Thanks for that

OrangeFlowersAreLovely · 11/09/2022 17:48

So are we now in the "Charlesian" era? 🤔

But what comes after " Post Modern " ?.

Americano75 · 11/09/2022 19:40

Literally thought they were as mythical as Santa!

Eh?! How have you never seen one? Or is that just a Scottish thing, seeing reindeer often 🤔 Honestly, this feels similar to someone saying they thought say badgers or owls were fictional!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 11/09/2022 20:42

incywincyspidery · 11/09/2022 19:03

I too thought Pontefract was in Wales. I found out it wasn't by accident when I was a student and happened to be on a coach that broke down just outside Leeds- right next to a road sign giving directions to Pontefract.

My most embarrassing one is my dad's fault! As a young child I was the one who always asked questions. And so, seeing bright yellow fields in springtime as far as the eye could see I asked what it was. And he said "Mustard". Actually it's rapeseed. But I was well into my 30s before I found that out. I always wondered why we needed quite so much mustard...

It may well have been mustard, closely related to rapeseed and quite a common crop, not necessarily for making mustard though.

PinkArt · 11/09/2022 20:42

Are we sure Pontefract isn't actually in Wales?! Because I thought it was too until this thread but googlemaps suggests it's recently moved to near Leeds.
My Will.I.Am / Flo Rida penny drop was that Cruella De Vil is literally called cruel devil.

Solonge · 11/09/2022 20:43

Carolean age….from the Latin for Charles.

JudgeJ · 11/09/2022 20:43

FurAndFeathers · 11/09/2022 18:08

It’s also in Sheffield

It's also a village not far from me in Norfolk.

BusySittingDown · 11/09/2022 20:43

I think those of you who though Pontefract was in Wales are getting it mixed up with Pontypandy, which is where Fireman Sam lives? 😂 The name is based on Tonypandy and Pontypridd, which are in South Wales.

BusySittingDown · 11/09/2022 20:44

*thought.

LostPropertyBox · 11/09/2022 20:44

The things on this thread that people didn't know are really surprising. I really did think most of this stuff was common knowledge. Im not originally from the U.K., but I kew about almost all of these already. This is not meant to sound Bragg. Im just genuinely surprised.

A couple other facts for you that some people may be unaware of given some of the other revelations in this post:

The Instagram icon is of an old fashioned camera lens.

It's Liz Truss, not Liz Trust (I had to explain this to a member of my team at work).

It's called Coca-Cola Classic because it was reformulated in 1985 and marketed as New Coke. Consumers were outraged and New Coke was removed from shelves 3 months later and the original Coke (aka Coca-Cola Classic) was reinstated.

Dodo birds were real.

Also, Spaghetti doesn't really grow on trees.
