Weird noise from neighbours empty house...

EllieRosesMammy · 09/09/2022 20:48

So a bit of backstory, we live in a "rough" area & I haven't seen my neighbour in over a month (6 weeks ago is when our cctv last saw her) which was also the same time someone spray painted the word "grass" on her window. I know she's involved in drugs, as most people round here are, so we assumed she had told on the local dealer and been ran out of her house. We mentioned it to the housing officer of our housing association the other day that we hadn't seen her in a while and we were concerned and she didn't know anything about it. And now in the last couple of days there's been a weird noise coming from her house - sounds like an old printer that's ran out of ink on repeat, but only at certain times of the day, and now it's a continuous humming sound like a hair dryer. I'm 100% certain she is not in that house, what the hell could the noise be?! And should I ring the non emergency police number or would they just tell me to contact the local council?

Phone the police. There was a grass up here who was tortured for three weeks and then murdered.

Better the police intervene.

This is so sad, did they catch the killers?

op agree def get welfare check

I don’t care what Rough area you are from but if you are worried about your neighbour then go and knock at the door but do it in the morning around 8am and make sure you knock hard.If you feel scared or threatened then don’t do anything.

Your choice

An anonymous report to the police is doing something without the OP putting her own family at risk.

Phone the bloody police and ask for a welfare check! They could be being held inside the house, they could have been attacked, God knows what! They've disappeared which is concerning enough. You need to tell the police, don't just assume that the CCTV conveniently broke when everyone left just because it's more comfortable to not get involved. I don't know where you live but in the part of the UK I grew up in, being involved with dodgy people and being labelled a 'grass' could lead to VERY nasty consequences. You don't need to get involved, you can also tell the police where her family live and they can chase up the other information.

jrt2022 · 10/09/2022 06:37

Also, definitely don't go round yourself. Posters saying that are either very naive or just reckless. If they've p*!?ed off drug dealers then stay well away. Phone the police.

PriamFarrl · 10/09/2022 07:28

This is tricky. I can see why you’d be reluctant to call the police. But from an observer police knocking at her door could be 100 things and not to do with the grass situation.

Sswhinesthebest · 10/09/2022 07:33

An anonymous phone call is the best bet. You really don’t want to get involved.

It would only smell if they were smoking it. It first have a string smell when growing unless you were in the room sniffing plants.

Not true. Depends how sophisticated their equipment is. If they have been cheap and skimped on buying the right equipment then the plants will stink once they get to a certain age but a good quality carbon filter will take away any smells right through to cropping and curing, this will be noisy and continuous. If they were growing weed OP will have seen more activity on her camera with people bringing in bags of soil and lights and heard more noises and banging with it being set up. The curtains will all be drawn, not half hanging down for privacy if someone was stuck in there tending to the plants, even if was in the loft! I would bet no plants are being grown there.

See I thought that too, with the lights it takes to grow weed then surely all the windows would be blacked out. I'm sure she's not in there but then I also have no clue what the noise is. I've made an anonymous report to crime stoppers and I'm gonna phone the police today for a welfare check just incase

Bit of an update: managed to track her down on Facebook (didn't know her surname till now which is why I couldn't orginially find her), she's definitely alive she updated her profile picture yesterday. So the house is empty just making some weird noises :| the hairdryer sound stopped and went back to the printer sound for a while, and then it was a rhythmic tapping after that for hours on end

Well that, along with the lack of blacked out windows, means we’re back to the ghost photocopier theory then... 🤔

Which at least is most cheery one so far.

Haha please no ghosts 🤦‍♀️ and no offense to her but I'm not sure she would know how to operate a photocopier, she's lovely but she's definitely not the smartest person.

Why wouldn't you contact her and tell her? Whatever it is it's using a hell of a lot of electricity and if her name is on the bill and she's in trouble.

We don't speak other than the occasional friendly nod, would be a bit weird if she knew I'd had to stalk her on Facebook 👀

What did the police say?

absolutelyanythingwilldo · 10/09/2022 09:52

Could be a hydroponics setup.

Perhaps the word "grass" you saw was actually a sign advertising her wares rather than graffiti?

I'll be honest. It sounds like a boiler problem. What you've described is the sound a boiler makes when the pressure is too low and no one has fixed it.
I'm surprised your first thought wasn't to let the police know and do a welfare check, though. I've done it in the past and thank god I did in my case. It just wouldn't have occurred to me to be wasting time on social media trying to get answers myself when it comes to human life.

Because I don't believe she's in the house. At first I thought she was on holiday, then that she had done a runner due to the whole "grass" thing

Update: just spoke to the police, they've put it down as a welfare concern and a "priority". Asked if I'd knocked on her door myself, said I wasn't comfortable doing so since as I don't know who's watching that house. They said that's fine they understand.

OP posts:
EllieRosesMammy · 10/09/2022 11:26

Another update: police rang back minutes later saying they'd spoke to her on a mobile number they had for her and she's fine, she's staying with her aunt due to some "ongoing issues she's having at her house". So now atleast I know she's okay, even more spooked out by the noises suddenly coming from a house that's been empty over a month 😬👻

HebeSunshine · 10/09/2022 13:48

Glad to hear she's ok, OP.
I'd maybe ask mnhq to delete this thread especially given your username is very outing, in case there is anything dodgy going on in that house.

LadyEloise1 · 10/09/2022 15:03

@EllieRosesMammy
I think that's good advice re deleting the thread for your own safety/privacy despite me wanting to know what the noise is .

cherrysthename · 10/09/2022 21:55

It's the boiler. I know it's not very exciting but I'd put money on it.
